if every race prepped car uses the 5 speed, there must be something to it
what about the 6-spd race cars? not all racecars are 5-spd...some are 4, etc. etc. every "race" car you've seen is 5-spd. doesnt mean shit.

i got better gas mileage on my 03 VIII then i do on my IX MR. not much difference but its there about 1mpg difference. it was more before i started shifting to 5th during normal street driving. i like the 6th gear but i dont like the high shifter. i dont track my car, well at least i havnt yet so i cant comment on the strength of the tranny. but there have been a few MRs who toasted their 4th gear at the track and switched to the 5spd. i like the SE interior but MR bbs rim color. if the SE was out when i bought my MR i may have just bought the SE. because the aluminum roof, HIDs, were 2 things i wanted for sure at the time. but now i kind of miss my sunroof lol. the suspension feels better on my MR too. basically all the evos pretty much the same. test drive both see which you like.

the MR is a couple tenths quicker to 60 than the GSR SE due to the shorter gearing on the six speed. I have heard of people complaining that the six speed isn't as strong os the 5 speed.
Actually, I think shorter sprints like 0-60 mph favor the five-speed (since the five speed will definitely hit 60 at the top of 2nd), whereas sprints to higher speeds favor the 6-speed's gearing. I dont get it, you prefer the shitty gas mileage of the 5 speed on the freeway over the 6 speed?
Well like other people have said, the factory rating of the five-speed Evos was 19 city/25 highway, versus the MR's 18/24. I've attained as high as 26.22 mpg in my IX SE (mentioned in the gas consumption thread), but that was going 65-70 mph. However, due to the MR's gearing, I think long drives at higher speeds (like to Vegas) might yield better mpg in the MR.

I've owned both 5-speed (49,000 miles on an 03) and 6-speed Evo's ( 23,000 miles on my current MR ). I prefer the 6-speed because it gives me more options for staying in the maximum torque power band while sport touring. I've tracked my car 14 times and wish I had the 5-speed while at the track because I could go faster in 4th gear without having to shift to 5th. Given the majority of my time is spent sport touring, I still prefer the 6-speed. But, if I ever blow my 6-speed while tracking, I will convert to the 5-speed.

I have an MR and I don't have a problem
Let me lay out the tranny battle...
1/4 mile drag racing: 5 speed own's only when you're dipping into low 12's high 11's... reason being... the 4th gear in the 5 is bigger allowing to run the car up to around 120 give or take a few... the 6 speed allows you to get up to 110 maybe... that fraction of a second when you're shifting out of 4th is gonna loose the race
road racing: The 6 speed definately gives you more ability to stay in a desired powerband simply because of the close gearing... but the 5 speed can definately handle it's own as well and there's not really a difference... 4th gear has been the gear to give out on the 6 speed because it isn't as beefy... the 5 speed has thicker gears, the 6 speed's gears are a little smaller to accomodate that 6th gear... I know plenty of guys that track the hell out of their MR with no problems... I heard running a transmission cooler on your car will almost eliminate the 4th gear problem in the MR
Daily Driving: no matter what the difference is in gas mileage.. what is 1 or 2 extra? If you're worried about gas mileage get a 50 whp yaris ... 6 speed tranny tends to be a little smoother that the 5 speed but are you going to notice that when you're boosting?
Freeway runs.. I've never maxed out my 6th gear on a freeway run... I had a 5 speed in front of me and we ran up to 153mph with similar mods on the 5 speed IX and I have an 05MR I stayed right with him...
What would I choose? If I can do it again I'd buy a 5 speed

so i'm glad to know that i'm not missing out on not having the 6 speed...i always felt like it was better cause the EVO ix is dead after 90 mph(its quick to get there but no power after that..imo). my car sounds like its close to red-line at 80 but i guess its a combo of the exhaust and what i thought was a wack 5-speed gear ratio...guess i was wrong

wow now im confused.
So it seems like for all out performance, the 5 speed is the way you wanna go, but if you prefer to drive the car more civilized and on the streets, the 6 speed is what you want.
in a dead race, a IX SE vs. a IX MR, if the race was from a dig to say 130, the SE would be just a little bit ahead of the MR assuming the drivers were identical in skill.
Just seems like i hear more people ranting on how they love their 5 speeds over the 6 speed crowd. and i even hear the MR guys saying if they could do it again, they'd go 5 speed.... but the things that kept them in an MR were the wheels, and etc.
Do mr's come with HID? or is it only the SE

On the IXs, the HIDs are only available on the SSL, MR and SE models.

The compros I've seen all perfer the 5 speed over the 6 for road racing.

I put 49,000 miles on my first Evo VIII with a 5-speed before I bought a IX MR which now has 25,000 miles and 14 track days. I think the 5-speed is better on the track and the 6-speed is more enjoyable on the street. Given I spend a lot more miles on the street than the track...I'm still happy with the 6-speed. However, if I ever destroy my 6-speed at the track I will certainly convert to a 5-speed.
