I was wondering, i've been shopping around for shops to install cams, valve spring and retainers, injectors, and headstuds. Now if im not mistaken the cams have to be removed in order to remove the springs and retainers... so my question is, why are shops charging me so much to install the cams... between $200-$300, does that make sense?

Yes I believe so because removing and installing cams is at least a 3-4 hour job depending on who does it and probably ongoing labor rate is 80/hr on the avg.

Installing springs & retainers is a PITA with the head still on the block. When I did my springs & retainers I removed my head to make it easier and to also install ARP head studs with a fresh head gasket. It is possible to do the valvetrain swap with the head installed but who ever does it has to compress the cylinder with air so the valves don't fall into the cylinders. Either way, I removed my head to make it easier and because putting on the keepers on the valves is tricky and the last thing you want is for one of them to fall down an oil valley. The prices seem fair for all the stuff you mentioned getting installed.

^+1000000000000 PITA..... you then have the right to bitch slap them if they dont do it right..... plus if you do head studs.. you will have to go back and have them re-tighten them. so make sure you work that out in your price as well.

Let me rephrase, why do shops charge so much for cam install when they are also charging $300 for the springs and retainers which makes it a total of about $500-$600to install cams and springs with retainers?

so much? think about how long the process takes to do the whole job...break it down by the hour. you're basically taking apart the head and putting it back together if you're doing cams and valvetrain. if anyone could do it, it wouldnt cost as much. when professionals have to put out X amount of hours, it costs money.

How long is the average to hours to change spring/retainers for someone who does a good job and knows what they are doing?

The shops that I talk to said they do not need to remove the head in order to install springs and retainers.
Also another question i have is, will the price differ if I do not install aftermarket cams and I only decide to change my springs and retainers???

$300 sounds about right, and springs/retainers are usually $150 more on top of cam install.

Why are you going to run different springs on stock cams? Seems kind of futile if you ask me. To get to the springs the cams are removed so why not put in better ones along with that? If you can't afford it just wait till you can.

Good luck, I saw a tutorial video somewhere on how to install that stuff. Might be helpful to find it and review it.

to the OP, make sure you have a valve spring remover tool. my personal opinion; remove the head and install the ARPs with a fresh head gasket.
