Does anyone send their oil out for Analysis?
« on: August 11, 2008, 06:47:17 PM »

Just curious if anyone here sends their oil out to be analyzed?  Blackstonelabs or Oil Analyzers...  If so, have they identified anything weird with your oil?  what type of oil were you using?

I cant seem to find much about oil analysis in here.

Did it with my motorcycle oil, and Amsoil outperformed the previous 2 oils I used in nearly every category. And in reality its not being anal at all, oil it the source of life in your cars.........

LOL, and I'll bet you're one of the Mobile 1 flag wavers who swears "IT'S WHAT THE LITTLE STICKER ON THE CAP SAYS SO IT MUST BE THE BESTEST OIL FOR MY EVO!!!"

bzzbee2, I always mean to get mine sent off but I never end up following through.  A buddy of mine a very high WHP single turbo supra sends his oil in for analysis on all three of his cars every change.  There is absolutely no better way to tell how your car's engine is doing then by an oil analysis.  In fact, my friend just got his latest one back Friday that he sent in from his 06 Subaru Turbo'd Forester.  He uses German Castro full synthetic.  Very impressive results on that oil.  I'm going to scan it in and keep it in my arsenal for the next MOBIL 1 is the GOD of oil debate that pops up on here ever month or so lol.

I was curious as i recently started to run E85.  Im pretty much a mobil 1 user... although i went a year on some motul (freebie).  Ive read some stuff on EvoM, however that place seems to be overrun with brainwashed amsoil users..  no matter what your question about oil.... their answer is " YOU NEED TO USE AMSOIL OR YOUR CAR WILL BLOW UP"... LOL  I know its great oil, but why should i spend that much money on oil if Mobil 1 provides me all the protection i need.   its just plain silly!

bzzbee2............Until you send out your own oil to test, then you cant really say that Mobil one protects the same way. I have sent my motorcycle oil to get tested twice and trust me not all oils are the same. Granted its not car oil, but motorcycle oil has to withstand higher stress and wear than automotive oil because of the super-high redlines on bikes and heat. I have sent in Amsoil, Mobil 1, Motul, and Shell Rotella ( a very popular motorcycle oil) and none can compete with Amsoil when it comes to many factors like wear and strees..........

We religiously send oil samples in on our race engines and periodically on our personal cars.  Youd be surprised if you saw the results of popular oils.  Good Luck

lots of guys in the porsche cayman world send in analysis a lot on all their cars and on one guys car it showed that there was coolant in trace amounts so he could replace his head gasket before a failure so i think its a good practice if u have the time and money

Eric from milspec has sent his out to get oil and tranny oil analysis cant remember where though.

I send my engine oil out regularly to Blackstone. I have sent my tranny oil in once just to see what the hell was going on in there since I was using a non-OEM fluid.

It's nice insurance, plus you can see things like how well your engine is wearing (lead content) and how well your filter is filtering (silicon content).

I have never used oil analyzers, but people seem to like them too.

BTW, in case someone is wondering, I am Erik@ MIL.SPEC over on EvoM  2funny

I've been religiously using waste oil analysis for decades and have copious amounts of data on lots of different engines from race track only, to street only. It's a very useful indicator of engine condition and what replacement frequency needs are dictated for specific usage. The old 3K/3mo is a worthless measurement and says *nothing* about usage, temperature, moisture, dirt, etc.

There are several analysis companies that will do free tests for you.

My nevada E85 smells a bit different than your cali E85.  I have  a few people tell me its a bit different (smelling).  Im thinking because it may be made with different corn or possibly come from a different plant...  My oil smells like oil.  No fuel smell or cooking oil smell...

Just got the analysis back yesterday.  All is well within parameters. will keep checking through the next few oil changes.  They indicated that E85 has really not done anything negative to the oil.  I will be sending out every 1000 miles for the next few thousand miles to see what changes.   Thankfully i can expense it because i drive so much for work.  Not sure how i got the boss to agree to that one.

05CBR
Yea i know that motorcycles are more abusive to oil... However, I don't drive a motorcycle so how a oil works in a motorcycle and how it affects the engine is useless to me.  Im more worried about my car.  I never said that Mobil 1 did protect the same way.  I was simply asking the question...   Kinda the point of this whole post.  I was trying to see actual results and not just the typical response from someone that like his oil that comes out of a purple bottle....  LOL  Either way i do agree with you that the only real way to find this stuff out is to do the analysis.

why is it that only one person has come out and said their "AMSOIL" product seems to be doing better than others?

is that the "end all" product to use?

can anyone else who has done testing please post your results?
