Filled up about 40 gallons of E85 at the Sylmar station Sat morning at 5am... car would hit knock at high loads at Buttonwillow :/ Got back and tested the E85, tested at ~E65 (or where the line would be, since it's not even marked on the test tube...)
I thought there was a limit to how far the Ethanol content could vary...
The legal limit is absurdly low, like E45. They print it on the side of the pump.
Nevertheless, if you do not have the Zeitronix E85 gauge, just get one ASAP. They are cheap for what they are. Try to get Mike W to trade you your tune credit for labor on the install...that is just a labor for labor swap, NBD. That gauge could be worth as much as an engine if you blow something up at the track running E65. The tube thingy works OK but the digital gauge is golden. In the few years I have been running the gauge with E85, the lowest I have seen is E70. The highest I have gotten is E86. The most common readings are E80-82. I would say that in all of 2014, all I have gotten is E80-82. hi.
p.s. If you want to see the gauge in action, hit me up and we can meet up at RRE. I have 3 finals this coming week and 3 the week after (FML) but after that I will be chilling until mid January.
Oh damn, this is maybe why I saw my first knock CEL flash on E85 on Friday. I had just filled up at Brentwood.
Worst timing ever because I was also troubleshooting a belt chirp so it freaked me out. Made me think it was related. Now I gotta work my way through a whole tank of this cornpiss.
Ugh, that's a stupidly low legal limit... Will probably have to start bringing my test tube to every fill up... Have been considering an E85 content analyzer, but with all the other issues I have to throw money at, there's barely enough to get around to those issues :/ Might have to stick with the test tube for a while

Is that the one you have Jamesinger?? Do you have it combined with the Flow Through Flex Fuel Sensor? Looking into purchasing a kit
I have this set up by RRE. They can get the sensors for a bit cheaper now. I have it in the glove box. I check it when I fill up and if I know I am going to blast. It is kind of a check it once before you use the full power of the dark side and then be confident that your gas will not be the thing that blows up your engine.
here is a (shitty) picture of the stickers you will see on the sides of E85 pumps:
So, if you were tuned at E80-82 (which is what I see most commonly), and they sell E70, and if you start blasting on that, you will at least see knock for sure.
so, I was WAY off about E40...it was more of a musical reference...but E70 can still fuck your shit up if you run it all day at the track and you are tuned on E80+.
This is why the AEM Infinity ECU stuff is super attractive to me. I am not that much of a baller but an adaptive ECU would be dope for this issue...0 fucks would have to be given if your ECU could just sort all this BS out.
i have the zextronic gauge and it almost always rears e80-e81 when i pump e85. flex fuel tune is the way to go. i Have a flex fuel tune on my s2000 and its the best thing since apple pie. No more switchine maps or draining your take to switch from 91 octane to e85. The less eothonal there is the ecu will automatically run less boost and less timing.
here is a pic of my s2000 after pumping 6 gallons on 91 octane into my tank full of e85. come out to e50. feels singificantly less way than my e85 tune and significantly more power than my 91 octane tune.
RRE has been running the infinity ECU on their main varis widebody EVO shop car for quite a while now with solid results.

This car gets run hard at least monthly.
I want this ECU at some point as well.
The older AEM Series 2 EMS (read - cheaper) can do full flex fuel now too.

I was just at the Pearson in Beaumont this weekend and got e85 for $3.099. I saw that red "minimum 70%" sticker prominently displayed.
Wish the Series 1 could do it. I made the early switch before they figured out how to get the ECU to switch so been stuck with the Series 1 for awhile. =(

Is there an e85 gas station in Bakersfield?
