Opinions on if the Service Department blowing smokes?

Hi guys, I got an '06 EVO IX that recently needed the airbags serviced due to recall. I'm sure many of you got that too.

Well last week, I brought it to the dealership to get it done, but later that night as I was driving, I noticed the left half of my speedometer, as well as the mileage display was not even lit (can't tell by the picture). I thought it was caused by the technician who removed my dashboard to replace the airbags.

I scheduled an appointment earlier today and went in to have them fix it. 30 Minutes later, one of the service guys comes to me and says, and I'm paraphrasing, "one of the lights apparently burnt out, but it had nothing to do with us, we never touched it when we serviced the air bags. You're gonna have to order another, which we dont have, for 8 bucks, then cost you another 70 bucks to install it."

It was at that point that I was pissed, and told him how he can tell me that it magically burnt out right after my car got serviced, but that it was perfectly fine the night before. And the light happen to be located in the same area where the speedometer is. If it was the technician's fault, then I wasted time going there, and he didn't even offer to service it for free for my trouble.

But since I'm not familiar with the wiring inside there, I'd like to ask you guys, is this guy blowing smokes up my ass and not admit it was his technician's fault, or could it actually happen? I was planning to give the manager a call, but wanted to make sure I didn't overact.

    Thanks.

Other than the service department at South Coast Mitsubishi and for the most part at Cerritos Mitsubishi, the sole purpose of the Mitsubishi Dealership service departments and the dealer network as a whole seems to be to fuck you in the ass. SCM and Cerritos at least see EVOs on a regular basis and know what end is what. Others unfortunately do nothing but regular basic maintenance on Outlanders. As EVOs start getting more and more rare, it will only get worse. If you only got smoke blowed up your ass consider yourself lucky.

Now with your problem, with the little light bulbs in your dash being 10 years old, just a little jostle can make the tiny filament break. Yeah he was in there, but not exactly his fault. Cops kick in the door, there is a dead dash light bulb on the floor with a bullet hole in it, the poor mechanic had been holding the gun, but swears he didn't pull the trigger, it just went off on its own. Get all the lamp fixtures in your house, unplug them and move them all out in the yard and put them back where they were. One has a dead bulb now, conspiracy? Neglect? Foul play? Maybe not.

It is a 20 minute job. You take out 2 screws in the top of the black outer bezel and it pops out. Then you take out 4 screws in the cluster assy and it pulls out towards you all in one piece. No wires. It just plugs in as an assembly. You flip it over and take out the dead bulb and put in the new one. Ask them for a free couple of bulbs maybe, you install it?

Last time I switched a bulb on my EVO 8 speedometer, I didn't touch anything on the steering wheel except for the lock so that I could move the steering wheel down.
Also like to point out this How To "http://www.evolutionm.net/forums/evo-how-requests-questions-tips/473091-how-remove-air-bag-evo-8-9-steering-wheel.html" notice that the speedometer was not touched to remove the airbag.

I just think it was bad luck that the bulb went out.

It's only a gauge cluster bulb, nothing to hassle over when it could really just not be their fault :) And like Mike said, it's fairly simple to replace, you just need a phillips head screwdriver.

I think this is for the passenger-side air bag recall, which I think you need to remove the dash to get to.

Which dealership did you go to?

Obviously whenever things happen after we leave the dealership, it's our first reaction to blame whoever touched it last. But like Mike W said, it's totally possible for it to have been by coincidence.
