Has anyone in here done their own tranny and diff fluids? I hear its pretty expensive to do it at the dealer. Also, any recommendations on what fluids to use?

Had mine done along with the 15K mile service at the dealer. Used Redline MT-90 for tranny, and Redline 75W90 for front and rear. Here are several useful guides on fluid change from evom.net

i got mine from summit racing, about the same price, i was looking at doing it myself, crawled under the car, but it was going to be too time consuming and i didnt want to put up with it. I paid a race transmission shop here in temecula 140 to do it. dealer wanted like 300. beauty of living in temecula, more off road race companies than anywhere!!!

Hey, I was about to change my tranny oil using the Redline, then the mechanic told me that Mitsu had it mark that when the tranny oil is change and that will void the warranty so I didnt change the oil :(

Anyhow I dont know whether mitsu will void the warranty or not by us changing the tranny oil whatsoever, anyone knows for sure?

Bullshit.
I am a Mits Master tech at a dealer. All these posts about "oh the dealer will void your warranty if a dog pisses on your tire" shit cracks me up. What can and cannot void a warranty is delegated by the BAR, and NO shop wants to cross them. Keep fluid in it and your warranty is fine. Just don't mix fluids. And make sure the fluid you use has the correct rating. Keep in mind that the drans, diff and t/case don't all like the same fluids (GL-4 75-85 or 75-90 for the trans, GL-5 75-90 for the others). As long as it was done correctly (ie the drain plug doesn't get left loose or out, and the level is correct) your warranty is fine.
BTW, what does your average shop charge for the labor to change fluids drivetrain fluids?? I want to get a price sheet going for this kind of stuff. Really can't void the warrranty if the dealer does it!!

THe complete cost of the 15K service through the dealer was $255 and that included the prescribed fluid changes. I didn't think that was too bad, considering the normal 3,750-service runs about $90 for the Mobil One oil change and tire rotation.

wow! thanks a lot dr.evo for telling me that =)

I was about to change the oil then the mechanic refuse to do it afraid that might void the warranty. anyhow they charge $20 to change the tranny oil ( i bring my own oil...) but then since they said that so thats why I shared in here and ask some questions :)

btw thanks a lot!

heres a link about it http://buschurforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2500

david buscher says they found out the hard way to use the stock tranny fluid.

yeah... i would use the stock 90w fluid for the transfer case.. buschur and a lot of others had some problems.. just be careful what type of fluid you use..

we used Mobil1 75x90 for the tranny and stock mitsubishi 90w for the transfer case

If anybody still wants to get Redline products talk to Greg (service mgr) at the 76 station at 26th and Wilshire. He's been hooking me up for nearly a year now - good guy.

rizalhoo,
were are you getting your service done? Those prices are pretty high. Pm me for our prices on service. $90 for a 3,750 service, try $60 in HB!

My T-case was starting to whine something fearce so I had my local grease shop do it full mobil sysnthetics cost about 110, and the whine went away... for about 2500 miles.

and now its back.

Hey all - what's the latest thinking on this? I have an appt at HB Mitsu to get the 15K and was told I could bring Mobil1, but I'm starting to wonder since Mobil1 synth gear oil is a GL-5, and the manual calls for GL-4 in the trans.

Anybody?

What's so wrong with using the Mitsubishi fluids, they are synthetic, right? At least that's what the dealer told me. I'd rather use their recommended fluids then to have a warranty issue come up over what fluids I was using.

oldskool

True - I'm leaning towards that logic myself. The main thing from what I've read is to stay away from GL-5 rated fluids in the trans. Evidently GL-5 is not good for GL-4 applications. I don't know if the stock Mitsu fluids are synthetic though.

I put the stock fluid back in there, buschur recomends it and ive heard of nothing but problems with aftermarket fluids

Sounds good to me. I make a living trying to tell people which aftermarket junk is better than the stock junk and how much more HP you'll make by bolting on this or that. The big joke around here is that just putting a sticker on the car, escecially tilted sideways, will net a 30hp gain! I'm beginning to think the guys in Japan with the white labcoats know more than the guys with the stickers and the hype. Besides - putting GL-5 Mobil1 in a trans designed to use GL-4 may be a bad idea.

:D

I'm pretty sure what's used are specific Mitsubishi synthetic fluids for the trans and diff.
