for the first time in how many months i had the evo i FINALLY got my lazy ass to fill half of my tank with 100 octane(25 bucks). the 76 station is in phillips ranch. i've been using "piss" 91. yea i know i should kill myself for doing such a disnhonorable thing to my car. but damn, my car feels stronger than before as if it's on redbull or something. i promised myself for lent and beyond i will not use 91. and the best thing is the gas station is 40 seconds away from my house and i think it's the only one that serves 100 octane around the area. i don't give a rat's ass anymore about the $5/gal. i'm feeding my baby the BEST!

LOL, you'll stop eventually, that shit is too much!.....and its not like 91 hurts your car.

The best way is to mix 91 and 100 to get 93, anything over isnt going to do anything because the ecu dosent recognize anything over 93.

but if you want more boost......every 5 octane points= 1lb more boost everything else = (110=helps my 4banger keepup with the Z06's)

Care to tell me how the EVO knows what octane you run?

we call that a E C U in evo land, so your trying to tell me that the evo responds to 87,89,91,93,100 the same?

100 definitely helps. I don't know if it is just because the car isn't pulling timming or what.

Right now is a good time to try it, with 91 octane at $2.58/g and 100 still at the same old $4.49/g it doesn't seem as expensive as it used to.

big differnce running 100, i put about 6 galones the other day . Straight 100 no mixing and wow the car comes to live !!
im glad that we have this gas station in WLA were they carry it at the pump

Nope, Im telling you it responds to 100 better then 93. Its not like it has a meter that says "we have reached 93 octane, stop advancing ignition timing"

I garunTEE thats Evos stock, and especially running 19 psi at redline, will knock plenty on 93 octane to get serious gains from 100, maybe 110.

leaveit2bevo
02-27-2004, 11:13 AM
Um ok our cars stock are meant to run off 93 octane but if the computer detects its a lower octane( thats what it does according to the manual) it will retard timing to match the lower octane. So unless you have a flash and arent RAISING BOOST 100 and 93 will not have a difference on a stock evo. Yes I agree once you raise boost it will but were talking stock.

LOL ITS A WASTE OF MONEY!!! unless your messing with boost or have a flash 93 and 100 arent going to make a difference. How can it the ecu stock is tuned to run of 93 so explain to me how 100 is going to make a differece?

How much is gas in Orange county and LA area. In Temecula the cheapest is $2.17 from yesterday.

GokuSSJ4

it advances the timing lol ... either way the car always benefits from it , instead of running 91 yunk !!!

The manual is giving a VERY simplified version of what the ECU is doing. The cars most likely DO knock to some degree stock, and adding more octane will remove that knock. I have yet to do much datalogging on EVO's but 4-6 counts of knock on a otherwise stock car seems pretty normal, and 100 octane would definitley remove that knock. How significant this will be on timing is hard to say, but it will have a measureable effect on both timing and HP.

Blak94GSX

The simplified explanation of how the ECU works is that it has default timing tables based on airflow (engine load), and RPM, with modifiers for coolant temp, air temp, etc.

The ECU monitors the knock sensor all the time and if there is no knock it advances the timing slightly over the default timing value. If there is a small amount of knock it runs the default timing unaltered, and if there is moderate knock it pulls a bit of timing from the default table value.

The stock tables are setup to keep the engine from exploding with 93 octane fuel, but can still improve on the default timing with better fuel like 100 unleaded. I would consider 100 unleaded to be the limit of what a completely stock EVO can take advantage of. Actually it is closer to 96 octane, but nobody makes that flavor of fuel. Now with more boost or better airflow due to intake/exhaust mods, etc, straight 100 unleaded can have noticeable gains over 93 octane.

It is up to you whether paying twice as much for fuel to get that extra 8HP is worth it...

Now if the car is fully tuned for higher octane fuel then there are much higher gains, but that's another topic entirely.

imagine also adding cams to that and FMIC , you are able to feel the difference . From time to time i like running 100 octane . If i would do it all the time i would go broke.....

That's why I'm so stoked that i just got promoted and get a company car to shlep around as my dd! As of Monday the EVO stays in the garage with a full tank of the good stuff! My evo drank the 94 mix for about 4 months when i first got her in March, but damn did that hurt the wallet. Can't wait to run 100....100% of the time!! Of course, I'll be getting the APS stage 1 and have it tuned for 100.

I have been blending my own to get about 93 octane for the last 7-8 tanks. I have mixed VP103 with VP91, '76 100 with 91 and Xylene (117) with 91. They all improve gas mileage. Also, running SAFCII with Buschur settings I get no knock indications running 20psi to 7000 rpm. Today I got stuck and put 5 gallons of 91 in with 3 gallons of my mix just to get home. This should produce about 92 octane. In normal freeway driving below 4500 rpm and 10 psi I was getting knock reading up to 20. I can only conclude two things from this. 1. Knock increases below 93 octane. 2. There is very little or no knock at 93 octane.

By the way you can buy VP103 at 4.95 a gallon at Merit Oil in Rialto.

I used to get VP 104 for about $5.15/gal on Beach Blvd in HB (at the car wash at Beach & Garfield).

Last night I got Sunoco 94 for $1.89/gal...

I HATE YOU CHRIS!!! For those of you who don't know, Chris and I were pretty tight before he moved out to VA, along with Jeff...we'd go to all the Friday night meets and etc...Anyway, he's driving out to VA, stops in Arkansas and calls me on my cel phone from the gas station just to taunt me that he was filling up with REAL 94 for like $1.50 or something like that. PUNK!!!

The hottest girls out here are SOOOOOOOOO stuck up and/or married. If they were in OC, they'd be like a 7 or 8 at best. I saw hotter girls in HB at the Vons...

A lot are really homely. The only good thing is that most of them aren't fat. (Probably since there is no Tommy's or In-N-Out or Jack in the Crack or Carl's Jr or Del Taco.... Get the picture?).

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKK SAUCE

Ask Secret Chimp about how it is out here.
