at around 500 miles on my evo, i started hearing this faint whining noise during acceleration. the sound first becomes audible around 1500 rpm and gets louder as the rpm increase. the noise goes away when i step on the clutch. i have not driven the car hard - however, this is my first stick and i have stalled numerous times and made the engine make some unpleasant sounds. 2 mechanics have driven the car and told me there isn't anything wrong, but i know this sound wasn't there when it was new. does anyone have any idea what the noise could be?

our cars do make a whine but it could be the transfer case.

You are sure that it's not just the turbo spooling up, right?

really, so the turbo is supposed to make a whining noise while it's spooling up before the whoosh at ~3000 rpm? i wonder why i didn't notice it before. thanks guys.

You getting a woosh at 3000?? Are you shifting at 3000?? The turbo will whine when it starts to spool.

in normal driving, i shift between 3000 and 3500. the exact rpm at which the whooshing sound happens varies, but i think it's generally between 3000 and 3500. i think i need some clarification of terms - is the "whooshing" sound the sound of the turbo "spooling," or is it the sound of the blow off valve? what does spooling mean anyway? what about before the whooshing sound - is the turbo supposed to make any noise at all? if so, is it supposed to make a faint noise that sounds like something is winding up? this is what i am hearing.

After you break it in... roll down your windows and take it up to 6000rpm. It'll all be clear...

it is your Turbo, or there is a cat, stuck under your car!

I think it is the turbo. You pick which one. I will start a poll for you, if you would like :))

On my WRX I had the mounstrous TurboXS 4" downpipe which sites right in front of the passenger front seat. That had the most beautiful turbo whine...almost as good as a ridiculously tricked out Ruf 996 Turbo I saw/heard/was-passed-by at a BMW CCA track event.

It was an attempt at a joke to be directed at jmurda for asking about the tranny/turbo whining noise. You pointed that a driver of his state should not have purchased it and I tried to further enhance the humor by making a reference by linking his lack of knowledge towards the evo to Vin Diesel's general lack of knowledge towards cars. Hope that clarifies the situation.
