Actually two part question... maybe someone can answer..

1. How do the stock advans work on a 17x9?

2. Anyone try 275/40ZR17 RA-1s on 17x9?

1. Like stock advan's, decent grip when cold, past their prime on lap 3, blistered on lap 5 unless you let them cool off.

2. I believe this to be the tire of choice for the serious track day car, mounted on 8.5 inch wide wheels, excellent compromise between sidewall shape and total weight of the wheel/tire package. The wider you make the inside of the wheel, the weaker the unsupported inside is, making it stupid easy to bend on the 9 inch wheels when run on an EVO on a road circuit. Ask Robi about the 18 x 9 inch wheels he runs, how many has he had to replace cause they were bent to death. The answer will amaze you.

John are you saying 275 on 8.5 is ideal/ or is the stock tire on 8.5 ideal?

Guess I should clarify... I'm wondering if running 275 width on 9" instead of 255 width would be advantageous or too wide. Would it rub running 275's without rolling the fenders?

I just ordered 275/40-17s to run on 8.5 inch wheels. These will be track tested later this month.

Stock Tires are best on stock wheels, what a concept!

The 9 inch wheels bend easier than the 8.5s, I am sticking with the 8.5s

Fender rolling is mandatory with 255s, even more with 275s.

What about running tires whose recommended rim width is 8.5 to 10.0 inches on 8 inch wheels. Is this acceptable, or not? How does it affect the tire?

How does it affect the tire?

Turn in will be less precise, usually this is more than made up by the better forward bite of the larger tire.

John. . .

Im using your suspension on the stock rims and tires right now, but if i keep the stock tires and go up to a 17 x 8.5 in wheel (tires still 235), do you think i need to get my fenders rolled?

I would imagine that it would depend on the wheel/offset you get.

40 offset wheels should clear.

excuse my ignorance, but im only vaguely familiar with how offset works. If a 40 offset will clear, would a 30 offset clear as well?

30 offset sticks out of the fenderwell 10 mm more than 40 offset, the 30 offset will make your tires hit the fenders in the rear, unless you choose to run a stupid amount of negative camber.

I am going to be running 18x8.5, anybody have a good idea of which kind of tires to use and the specs?

the tires are they for track or street set up ?
do you plan on lowering the car (coil over set up ) or leave it the way it is ?

Just to clarify, that the 255's will need fender rolling with lowering but not on the stock suspension right?
