Where?

Streets of Willow Springs, Rosamond, CA - (www.willowspringsraceway.com)

Description

The Streets of Willow Springs is a favorite short track in the Los Angeles area, popular with magazines for car tests and an excellent learning track as well. Turns are moderate-speed (35 - 70mph), making it a safe place to take your street car and find its limits. All the turns but one have wide runoff areas of well-packed dirt. This track is highly-recommended for car and driver development due to it's lower-speed, technical nature.

Sounds like a good idea although the rules are too broad - whomever can spend the most money, wins. IMO, thats not very challenging.

There should be several clearly defined classes so tuners can show their expertise by utlizing resources wisely to deliver results.... now thats challenging.

If anybody shows up with a factory built race car, my money's on that car. ;)

If the organizers want some help putting together some rules, I can help.

I don't know what tuning has to do with lap times. It seems like this would be more of a driver/suspension competition then anything.

A tuner shoot out is really hard to judge.

You can't clear baseline to start from, so you never know how much the tune helped or hurt the car because they're all different, with different historys.

And you can't use the same car because of the different performance combination preferences.

I expect that there won't be a clear winner (other then who makes it around the track fastest). But it's going to be a hell of a show!

I'm definately going.

Is there a schedule for each day? Usually, when you go to HPDE events or NASA combined race/HPDE, there is a schedule that tells you who is on the track at any given time. While not always adhered to religously, it's helpful.

I plan to bring my kids on Saturday to expose them to the EVO community, but I can't get there until about 11:00 a.m. I would probably only spectate, but I might like to get in one run session on the track.

Does anyone know the schedule on Sat. Dec. 4?

Usually it is not easy to get on the track with having missed morning driver's meeting and being assigned a run group.

If this is a 2 day event, especially with the pissing match from the EOC event....why not stretch this out and have the shootout sunday with battling sessions/test laps all saturday...would make more sense and keep both day filled with drivers and spectators...if it all goes down saturday...sunday seems pointless IMHO. What does everyone else think?

sparcoevo
12-01-2004, 07:41 AM
To be honest, I think the Tuner Shootout should remain a one day event. I think we should have 2 "shootout" sessions and the fastest one lap from those two sessions be counted toward the overall competition. I don't think it makes sense to have so many practice sessions, then only have 2 laps all day that actually count. It would be better to have the 2 practice sessions in the morning, then have two "shootout" sessions that would give us a total of 4 laps to post a quick time. This would change the "qualifying" session into a session that actually counted, and then we could run the last "shootout" session in reverse order of the fastest times (kinda like F1). Each session is:

1 warm-up lap (out lap)
2 timed laps
1 cool-down lap (in lap)

If we push the shootout to later in the day, we run the risk of the whole program being delayed due to accidents, oil spills, etc...and running into darkness. What do you guys think?

Yes, I will probably be driving on Saturday afternoon.

I believe Aaron Bitterman of SpeedVentures set the schedule. He has been organizing HPDE and race events for years and keeps a pretty tight ship, sticking to the schedule so everyone gets all their promised track time, which is pretty tough to do on a racetrack where "shid happens."

I like the current schedule. I will bring my kids up to Streets to experience the EVO community and racetrack environment, and to watch the tuner shootout at noon on Saturday. Then I plan to drive one or two HPDE run sessions in my RS on Saturday afternoon.

See you there.

I brought my kids to the EVO Tuner Shootout on Sat. Dec. 4 at SOW. I could only stay a couple of hours and drive in 2 HPDE sessions before they got bored and wanted to do something else.

But it was fun. The first tuner shootout was ending as I left. RRE's cars were in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place when I left, but I don't know the final result. One thing's for sure, the yellow RRE EVO wins for best SOUND!!!

How did the Sparco Evo do?

Blak94GSX
12-04-2004, 10:31 PM
I think the Sparco EVO ended up in 6th place. They had some turbo wastegate issues that they weren't able to resolve in time. Car looked great and seemed to turn good, just wasn't making the boost, which was disappointing. Sparco of course did the best they could and were supportive of the EVO effort and all-around good guys.

I think we should run at a bigger, faster track next time. How about Big Willow -- it costs more, but it's not that expensive compared to some of the other tracks in Calif. EVOs have lots of hp and it's fun to open them up on the straights and sweepers at Big Willow.

Great pics!!!

Streets is the better, more technical, more demanding track to drive on.

Richard EVO
12-05-2004, 01:00 PM
Sorry, I can't agree with that. There's no place to open up EVOs on Streets, some of which have 400+ hp. Having run Thunderhill Raceway for the first time last weekend, Streets of Willow is like driving around a parking lot.

You want technical? Buttowillow has 21 turns. It also has several straights (I especially like the back straight when NOT running the bus stop), and the Talledega sweeper. If Big Willow is not "technical" enough for you, how about Buttonwillow next time? RacerFactory and SpeedVentures run there.

I think the reason why Streets is more technical is b/c its predominantly turns, a 2 very short straightaways. People can't use power to overcome their skill or lack thereof in the turns.

A combination of both Skill and power would be the best venue for a track attack...buttonwillow would be optimum in this regard. If you are not a sharp, skiled driver, you will not be able to overcome that fact at buttonwillow.

The reason Streets of Willow is used a lot is that it is cheap to rent and frequently available. It is by far the most boring racetrack in Calif. I am unrepentant in that opinion. How many of you who swear by the little "technical" track have ever driven anywhere else?

Ha ha ha. Well I guess I'm the only one who doesn't care much for Streets of Willow. Maybe it's because I'm still pretty slow in the turns and can only catch up with people on the straights. lol.

But if you haven't driven Buttonwillow and Thunderhill, you gotta try 'em. Thunderhill is a long drive, so you only want to go to a 2-day event there.

Next two day even is Feb 26-27, NCRC....We should make it a goal to get a big contingent of Evos there.

Snorre Grunnen Owner San Rafael Mitsubishi pulled his off his car and the compressor, Condensor, Dryer, extra Idler Wheel, Hoses Clamps and associated "stuff" (like the extra radiator fan for the A'C condensor) all comes to 85 lbs so I thought a nice safe 65 lbs wouldn't draw any fire...OOPS....

Id be a little worried about Thunderhill in late Feb. Rain is likely, and it will be really cold. It was about 40 degrees and blasting wind the weekend I was there right after Thanksgiving, and Feb. has to be much worse. I hate driving on a racetrack in the rain.

At T-hill it rained the night before and into the early morning of the first day (Sat.), but stopped a little before the first run session, and after two or three groups went out, the track was dry the rest of the day. On Sunday it was sunny and dry, but cold and windy all day.

I'd hate to make a nearly 1,000 mile round trip from Redondo Beach, just to sit on the sidelines hoping the rain would stop, or driving in the rain at 4/10s and praying nothing bad happens. Late spring, summer and early fall are better at T-hill.
