View Full Version : Is it okay to drive the car with fried catalytic converter?

I have been getting the p0420 code for a while now. It would shut itself off and came back after a few days. Yesterday I heard a weird knocking noise from the cat, so I assumed it is fried. So, is it okay to drive the car for a while, because I'll probably replaced it with RRE hollow cat, or the same UR 3" cat.

can you hollow the cat you have?

the problem you can run into is that if the cat can end up blocking the flow of your exhaust, causing the car to stall or choke from not letting any air go out(happen to me with an older car long time ago)

You could just bump out the blocks inside your cat and have a straightpipe, but then again you would run into problems with emissions.

you are fine to drive on it for a while (short while) so long as it doesnt clog.

Call magnaflow for a replacement they can get you a carb legal hi-flow that will perform close to the same way straight pipe will for aroung 140$.

I'm thinking about that, since my UR cat is probably useless now.

If you decide to bump out your cat then you couldn't you just retard the timing a couple of degrees when you have to go back for emissions and then advance it back to normal after?

I probably need to check mine also. I have the UR high flow cat 2, and its having that old ford, gas smell more obvious now.

Mine did the same before it started to make noise.

It won't pass smog without a cat, no matter where you set your timing. Get a cat and put it on before you smog, but until then if you want to deal with the MIL on in exchange for like 3 or 4 WHP, then just hollow the stock one out.

I just got my cat from RRE.
Does anyone want to buy my 3" UR cat, so you can make your own hollow cat?
