245/45/17 sucks on our rims unless its a R compound with a concrete sidewall 245/40/17 works amazing

would 255's affect your turning at all. I would think bigger tire on a smaller rim would lead to loss of bead.
Also could you go 245/35/17 or should you stay 245/40/17

All the 255 does is put more rubber on the ground, and only way
to lose a bead is to hit curb at oh say 60mph or a big ass
pot hole. dont go to 35 cause 1. u prolly wont find it for
a decent price anywhere let alone anywhere and 2. god help
that rim if the tire doent have a reinforced sidewall.
