this install was hard to find so i decided to write this up to make it easier to catch it on the search. key words, Mechanical o2 simiulator cel eliminator spark plug anti or de fouler

this is where i first found this mechanical o2 fix - http://forums.evolutionm.net/showth...37&page=1&pp=15

this installation will remove your SES (service engine soon) light , or CEL (check engine light) that is caused when you install a test pipe (no cat) or high flow cat.

when this light comes on from your install of a new exhaust , be aware that this has no effect on the performance of your car. its just a stupid reminder that the o2 (oxygen) sensor is finding a problem caused when you removed or did something to the stock catalytic converter.

btw - i thought about going with an o2 simulator / eliminator , but the cost / install / problems associated with this fix. did not appeal to me.

notes before starting
- you might have space for only 1 spark plug anti-fouler, sometimes using 1 will work / sometimes not
- having an electric drill helps out tremendously , those battery operated ones dont have that much power; they will still work but will be a pain
- this may still not solve your problem of the light; a small amount of people that try this 'quick fix' still cant get the light to go off

STEP 1
-purchase 2 spark plug anti foulers at your local auto parts store
-18 mm size
-made by HELP brand / part number 42002
-HELP has also another part number 42009 and are shorter in length than the 42002, i have heard they worked , but i am not 100 percent

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02852.sized.jpg

STEP 2
-disconnect the negative terminal on your battery. this will reset your ecu
-take one of the anti foulers and drill out its center using a 1/2 bit ,
-this will increase its hole size and allow your stock o2 sensor to fit

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02871.sized.jpg

STEP 3
-screw the drilled spark plug anti-fouler on top of the original
-be sure to use some kind of anti-seize on the treads. in case you need to remove your fix with ease

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02875.sized.jpg

STEP 4
-unscrew your stock o2 sensor and place your cel / ses fix in
-use anti seize on the threads
-clean your cell (by wiping it off with a paper towel)

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02877.sized.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02863.sized.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02866.sized.jpg

STEP 5
-reinstall your o2 sensor
-use anti seize on the threads

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/DSC02881.sized.jpg

STEP 6
-reconnect your battery (your ecu is reset)
-you have just solved the problem of the 'damn light keeps coming on'

ps. its cost me 8 dollars for the pack of 2 spark plug anti-foulers

Available at your local automotive store. Spark Plug Non Fouler PN 42009 ($4.99)

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/4%7E0.jpg

You now need to drill out 1 of the non foulers using a 1/2" drill bit. When finished this is what it will look like.

The idea behind it is when you remove the cat the 2nd o2 sensor is going to have too much crap reaching the sensor that isnt filtered out, which will make it think the cat has gone bad. What this does is it moves the o2 sensor further away so a limited amount of exhaust gets to the o2 sensor, it is a VERY little ammount that actually gets to the sensor but as long as it is considerably less than the primary o2 sensor then it wont cause a CEL.

from (http://www.k-series.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8833) pics rehosted by me incase the thread/pics disappear.

saw a few threads asking how to do it so i found it done w/ pics and decided to pass along the info

i did mine the same, except I didnt use no bench vise, I used a closed box wrench and put it against some stairs and started drilling away, of course it was unsafe, but I got it done :)

I just did this. I have a drill press stuck it in a socket. Slid an extension from the bottom up and then threw vice grips on it worked flawless... took about a minute and a half and used LOTS of WD40 to kepp it from catching...

i think motor oil works better for cutting oil, just for future reference.

It is but it makes a mess and I have a drill press so I didnt have a need to coat it in oil.. spray when needed... Cutting oil is obviously the ideal choice...

There is no hassle... you tap out a pre existing hole and save 10 bux...

guys with the rsr race DP this doesnt work because the o2 bung is on top and doesnt fit with the heat shield on top....unless theres anouther way. i just punched out a whole that was a tight fit for the o2 sensor and im doppin that it will be fine

You just "punched" a hole in it... that doesnt sound good. You need to be able to take the 02 partially out of the exhaust stream. Do you have a catback with a secondary bung on it. I need pictures to see what you did but punching a hole to drop it in wont work. You will pull a CEL if the DP replaces the cat....

well i didnt punch a whole out i did what u guys said i drilled it but i made it to be a good fit, plus the non-fouler i got was really long and the o2 sensor doent make it into the DP thats prob why it worked for me

if you do this mod and your catback or whatever it is on the 9s is such that it hits the floor pan you can either bang out the floor pan or find a 90 degree fitting Size M18x1.5 90

If you have a 15 rom for a IX there is a fix in EcuFlash. I have my sensor installed in the stock place before the cat and no CEL. Takes 2 seconds to change in EcuFlash. I just have the sensor there to make the heater circuit happy.

Tools used to make 1/2" hole with little hassle. Of course the drill and WD40 to lube drilling are missing. All of these can be found at Harbor Freight. I used the bits in order from left to right. The drill bit was used first down to 1/2" mark on the narrow side of the new anti-fowler. The middle and right bits are 1/2" diameter exactly. I only used 1 anit-fouler as well. Good so far on 1.25 tanks of fuel.

I just put some oil on mine and held it in my hand, pretty quick DIY, vice grip would probally be the wiser choice tho

Just installed a testpipe, previously had a HFC on. I havnt added the CEL fix so my o2 sensor is screwed into the bung by itself. Oddly, my CEL light hasnt turned on. I feel like theres something wrong here... this goes for when I had my HFC on as well. Can anybody explain?
