Sorry in advance if this has already been discussed but I did a search couldnt find anything.

Does anyone have any straight answers as to how difficult or what would be exactly involved in changing a 5spd to 6spd. I dont think t hould be that difficult but if anyone can see the diff mounts (mr vs 05) and let me know OR if anyone has actually done it. I know it will prob be expensive but If I were to put a 6spd in I could prob get it built to handle more power.

Any definitive info would be great.

Not exactly the answer to your question, but why on earth would you want to spend a nickel replacing your 5MT with the MR 6MT? You don't need 6 gears on the racetrack (or on the street, for that matter).

All the MR 6MT does is squash the 3rd and 4th gears of the EVO 5-speed down, so that you have 3 gears there (3rd, 4th, and 5th) instead of 2 gears. 1st and 2nd gear are the same in both gearboxes, and 6th in the MR is the same as 5th in the GSR and RS.

Don't waste your $$$.

agreed, I think for the amount of money and time it would take ot do the swap, you would be better off just trading in your evo for and MR, plus you can keep your warranty for that matter.

If you want to do a rebuild, get a dog-box. Check with RMR - they have the parts needed. It will be stronger and faster, like Bevo.

This is unchartered terrirtory for everyone. Unfortunately, our forum regulars avoided the question. I think the answer to your question, that they avoided, is they don't know. As far as I'm concerned, I don't know what it takes either. But I can offer a suggestion... I think your best bet is to source a trani, then get RRE, or some other shop to start doing the work. If you do do this, please have the work documented as well!

I think the conversion is a great upgrade. Contrary to what was said above, the ratios of all the gears, except first, are different. The closer ratios and taller final gear make this is a better gear box for both the track and street.

So I did a little research. Anyone who says the Evo VIII and RS 5-spd tranny and MR 6-spd tranny is the same except 3rd and 4th being opened to 3rd 4th and 5th is wrong...

if you notice that the final gear on both cars are not the same, that changes completly everything. Its not by much but defenetly not the same, to say which one is better for the track, thats a different story.

Not really, the difference between gear ratios is still smaller, making it a closer ratio gear box.

For the track, ideally you want one gear for every given speed range of turn. Having more gear ratios gives the driver more gears to choose the optimum gear for that turn from. For example, at WSIR, 4th is a little to low and fifth is a little too tall for turn nine. With an exit speed of 105MPH, I'm tapped out in 4th gear right at the exit of nine.
