View Full Version : Tire Review Toyo Proxes 4

First off let me say I knew they weren't going to be as good as the Advans. I wasn't expecting the grip of the Advans,... I was also looking for a daily tire that would last more than 8k miles.

Driveability:
By this I mean how tolerable the ride is. Ride quality is much improved over the Advans for obvious reasons. The sidewall isn't as stiff, which I will address later, so I am no longer in question of my alignment because as we all know the Advans would shift direction over ever pebble in the road.

Road Noise:
About the same. But it's not like we drive friggin Cadilacs.

Grip:
Grip is good. It's the turn in and steering response that is questionable. This is due to the previously mentioned sidewalls. Feels like my ass is swinging all over the place. I don't have 100% sureness on all of this though since I am still breaking the tires in.

This is all my initial response... I will post more later.

I agree with your initial review of the Proxes 4. I have the same set of tires in 18 inch. Just finished my break-in period to worn out the mold release lubricant. Even drove it in the rain last week and yesterday and it grips close to the Advans.

i believe due to the stiffness of the body all the weight is sent to the tires(the weakess link) the suspension is very stiff too. just be very careful with those tires. you life is hanging in the balance. they may not hold if you hit a corner too hard.

I've had for about 4 months now, and I ain't complaining.. I've done some hard canyon runs on these and they held up pretty good. Never lost grip and slid or anything like that... also the tires still look fairly new

just takes a bit of adjustment... many of us are running the proxy4's... once you get use to throwing your car into corners... you'll believe in them... i've been told by a few members that i was able to get on 3 wheels with these tires... so the grip can't be that bad right?

I'm looking to get new tires in the next month or so, Im still seriously considering spending the money for the Advans.

My second choice however, has been the Proxes 4's.

I will admit that one thing I am very particular about is the rubbers I wear.

I went with Falken Azenis 451's till I could afford some Advans again ... Same issues as the Proxie 4's ... not as stiff of a sidewall, decent grip but they are no advans .. I have 200 miles on mine so we'll see how it goes afterwards ...

I still don't get why people bypass the Toyo T-1S. It grips near Advan levels in most conditions (and much better in the wet), plus it doesn't wear quickly, and finally they are not too expensive.

I agree it was a great tire... but my reasoning for not picking them up was price ... I got my Falken's for sub 100.00 a pop and they should hold me over until I have $$$ saved for Advans ...

If I had a bigger tire budget I would of opted for the T1-S's though ..

If advan made a 255/40/17 size i would of purchase the tire all over again. I was able to get a bit over 18k with several track days :P IMO rotating the tires has a lot to do with it. Over 8k miles were with Muellers alignment and near 3k with Muellerized...JIC's. There not your typical friendly wet condition tires, but no tire usually is when your priority is dry traction. A great replacement for the Advans with a bit more of life span are the BF Goodrich KD's. Had them for over 12k and they seem like they will last another 15k more. Great dry traction and great steering response, once again since my priority is dry traction. When it rains, all it means its time to take it easy and slow down.

Yeah, PS2's are great. Arguably equal or better grip than the Yokos (I'm definitely quicker on them), they are 3 pounds lighter per tire, they give a much softer ride and they will clearly last longer than Advans.

They are a little pricy but not too bad for what you get.

Hmmm....

I drove a car with T1S on it, and I found them to be very soft, squirrly, and unpredicable, even at 80%. I'd NEVER get on a race track with those tires. Just my 2 cents.

Could be an issue with 235/45/17s... I had 245/40/18s. Perhaps the shorter, harder sidewall makes a significant difference.

Update. The soft sidewall still really bothers me... mid flex the car feels unpredictable but once it set it feels fine. Had a "REAL" moment the other day taking a friend for a ride in the car... nice right sweeper to an off camber left. Tail started slipping out at about 60 in a 35mph turn... lift off throttle and corrected direction of the fronts... then back on 50% throttle and the car straightened out.

Good tire... GREAT in the wet weather... I had so much fun on these during our rainy season.

Yeah for the most part in dry conditions I hate them. They're a good tire, but far from great. Unfortunately we're heading into dry weather season so I may have to pick up another set of wheels and tires.

i had a hard time picking a tire too, but i finally went with the Kumho MX's
have about 300-400 miles on them. quite happy with them for the price but definitely not advans. grips pretty good, but it does have softer sidewalls also, only draw back i can complain about. But i have heard the MX's are better than the proxes.

wtf? thats a grip...autobacs had a sale a while back for $130 per tire mounted and balance... if you find a legit toyo distributer, they can probably get it for that price or maybe cheaper.

I am currently tire shopping and am stuck between 2 tires. The Toyo T1's or the Falken Azenis ST-115's. I've heard more good things about these tires than bad. Can anyone give me some advice which one to pick? My wheels will be here next week, so I need to make a decision on the tires this weekend.

Sorry to thread jack...

T-1R (the update for the T-1S)... Same wet traction, better in the dry.
