do mine at least once a week but lately the weather has been shitty. If you leave them dirty for too long, it's harder to clean. Cleaning GTU's is a biatch!!

what cleaners do you guys recommed for rims ???
also using just a rag or is there anything else you guy highly recommend ??

gofaster87

No cleaners for rims. Soap and water is all you should use.

how about when you have a situation like the beaver's rims ??

gofaster87
03-04-2005, 01:53 PM
With beavers rims, I would just throw them away or use them as a table stand and get a new set.

how about when you see early signs ???
how do you prevent from getting that bad ??

harsh wheel cleaners are bad for caliper paint. to be honest, if they're getting bad, like mine are and hence my plan for the semi-near future...

take off one wheel
use some good Al wheel cleaner
spray it on pretty heavily, all over, inside and out.
let it soak for 5 ish minutes (wheels need to be very cool to start with)
don't let it dry
spray a little more on after soaking to keep it wet
get a toothbrush and really scrub the whole entire wheel while wearing some GOOD kitchen gloves
rinse the wheel off VERY well, maybe even do a light scrub with just soap and water
make sure all brake dust and grime are gone
dry them
WAX them
multiple coats if time permits
re-install wheel
oh yeah, while the wheel cleaner is soaking, use soap and water and a different toothbrush to clean the caliper so its pretty too.
then repeat for the other 3 wheels

time consuming, I know. but once you get them completely clean and waxed, the brake dust will be a LOT easier to get off later

You have to clean them as soon as you see the brake dust to prevent buildup or crusting of the material to the rims finish. You can try waxing the rim right before a race. The heat will melt it off but it will temporarily prevent the abrasive dust from eating into the rim.

I've used Simple Green and a wheel brush on my wheels and works wonders. No caliper paint damage either.

I just grab a soft cloth and wipe them down while i let my turbo timer run when I get home. Takes about 30 secs for that and a quick sweep with a california duster. They look new and shinny all the time, and I only wash the car once a month or so.

I just made sure I waxed them a while back, it keeps the dust from sticking.

I wash them every time I wash my car. This is about once every 2-3 weeks depending on weather, etc. My Evo was super dirty today when I washed her after all the rainy days we've been having. I'm going to have to clay bar her soon. Some crud just wouldn't come off. :?

I use P21S wheel cleaner and the sponge that came with it.

Dave, save me the trouble and just go die!!!

I ever tell you the story of the guy who bought a range rover that was stolen from one of my enterprise offices? *Yeah, a few cars were stolen off our lots one night and sold asap (how these deals generally work most of the time). *We were actually able to track a large percentage of them down after the fact. *One of the cars we found was a Land rover Disco. *we roll to the guys house to repo the ride from his ass and break the bad news that he had in fact received stolen property. *the disco is parked in the garage with the door open and had what looked like 50,000 coats of wax...this thing was just mirror clean. *We knock on the door, the guy answers....I shit you not....he's wearing a Land Rover hat, and a Land rover sweatshirt. *I felt like killing myself...but we had a good laugh for a few months over that one.

Asbinthe get, some Axxis pads and you may never have to wash you rims again! I put these on my sister's 3 series and I can't believe the rims looks immaculately clean even after 3 months of not washing the rims!

Just spent my uneeded part budget on rims and a strut bar, no new pads until I need them.

Rims? You must post pics and info on the m5forum. Speaking of which, it seems we post more here about our new cars than on the more appropriate forum. LOL

It does seem that way, rims are just rears for the front, new tires etc and a strong strut front brace. Brakes will be next likely, pads/lines/fluid.
