View Full Version : What's a Cat? I'm a noob

To start off, I don't know much about our car, but I was thinking about going catless, and was just wondering about the inherent risks and hassles with going catless (i.e. smog checks, fines from the police).
So, is it really worth it in the end?

If you dont have any fuel management expect to see your rear bumper covered in yellow crap

Nope. not worth it. Fines range from $700-$1500. Your clothes will reek from unburnt gas. If not done right, you'll get a check engine light. The difference in power between a testpipe and a high flow cat is negligible - not enough power to make a difference in most.. ahem..speed contests..

I made 15whp from swapping from a hiflo cat to a RRE special cat. It smells normal to me and if a cop looks underneath they will see a cat.

I'll second this. It's not worth it!

I'm running a straight pipe at the moment.
I cannot wait to put my HI Flow back in.

Not having a cat means....maybe...5 WHP over a high flow.
And it's certainly not worth the risk of getting caught.

IMHO

So, will running ANY Hi Flow cat still pass smog checks?

Guys, what you are all forgetting about catalytic converters is that it is ILLEGAL to CHANGE them unless they have been damaged for something like 50,000-miles. So even a hi-flow is illegal, unless you can prove damage. Again, it's not worth it!

how do you prove it was damaged?

You can't. I guess you can keep the receipt. you can simply say, your car got rear ended in a parking lot. pushed the exhaust system forward, therefore, breaking your CAT!

-i ran over a basketball
-i forgot and left the jackstand under the car when lowering it
-i backed too far into a parking space which crumpled the cat
-tire (and wheel maybe) fell off car in front of me and i ran over it
-car got towed and the towing company bent the exhaust while going up into their driveway

pick one, or make up a funny believable one and share here...

flip off a cop, thats pretty fuckin stupid, and i bet youll get a ticket because you're dumb

not that this has anything to do with a cat. i personally like the jackstand excuse because i always have a jackstand really close to the cat

You could prove damage with a body shop bill.

From what I understand, the catalytic converter from the factory is pretty much a hi-flow unit already. I ain't gonna risk a stupid (and expensive) ticket for a mere 5hp gain. Besides, it smells like shit and I'm not in the habit of cleaning (if possible) all the soot from the exaust being spread all over my bumper.

If you have a newer car you should pass smog no problem. I'm running a Helix HFC and my car has just over 6 thousand miles. I would probably pass with flyin colors.

Now a visual inspection at the state ref? hmmmm
