you're playing semantics games... because the WING is both a spoiler aND an aerofoil... an aerofoil is the generalized term that encompasses anything that passes through a gas fluid and causes some reactionary force.

a spoiler is something that reduces lift and increases drag when it is lifted. this is ABSOLUTELY tru for the wing... if you adjust your wing and make more downforce it will create more drag until you modify it's shape with a gurney or with tail swooping.

why would your car be slower? spoilers don't give you horsepower... in fact most of the time in drag race applications too much downforce causes too much friction between the tires and the ground giving slower times. the only time a wing is beneficial is when you're cornering and the increased downforce gives you increased grip for lateral adhesion.

well, kinda. spoilers can be just a piece of metal with some sort of steep AoA (angle of attack) and basically this "spoils" the air-hence the name spoiler. creates lots of drag

an airfoil HAS TO HAVE an airfoil shape, and depending on this shape and its AoA one can calculate downforce created.

therefore you, in the basic definition, have some correctness because both create downforce, albeit in rather different ways (one creates downforce, the other makes it virtually impossible to create life, essentially translating to the driveer feeling "downforce". creates relatively little drag

ok example time, a commercial airliner (because everyone has been on one of those, and probably seen this happen). a commercial airliner, when landing (forget the flaps because that will complicate the situation) has wings. wings are airfoils (they have airfoil shape to them, and they have the basic properties of an airfoil). so the plane is landing it has the wings to produce lift (thats how it flys) so as it touches down on the tarmac one will notice that immediately the pilot opens the airbrakes, and applies the wheel brakes. now people that look at the wing when these brakes are applied notice lots of flaps on the top of the wing that are lifted (kinda like a NASCAR spolier) now why they integrated this into an airplane. the spoiler on the airfoil, creates "downforce" and thus keeps the plane on the ground while going nearly takeoff speed down the runway (because a plane lifting off during landing would, understandably, be undesirable). also this spoiler creates tons of drag (the huge low pressure bubble behind the spoiler) this drag helps to slow the plane down (good idea huh?) and such.........

in short, in the most vague of details you are correct, however there are major factors that differentiate the two. and evo and STi are both 4 cyl. turbo, AWD rally-based production cars. but i think most would agree that there are significant factors that make the two different (see in the most basic form, they are similar, with details they become vastly different)

furthermore, this is not a dirrect attack on your knowledge or whatever, but i wanted to shine light on the subject if someone was really interested in the difference between these two (at this elementary level, as a car driver, really doesnt care that much. aeronautical engineers, however, must know the difference-as it is kinda important)

so this person... who has no life... really needs to study up on aerodynamics and find out that there are benefits to aerodynamic improvement at all speeds and all air velocities and that although the piece is tuned for one specific efficiency range that does does not mean it doesn't provide some marginal benefits at other points on the gaussian.
