Hello fellas, just wanted to introduce myself. I recently purchased a 2005 black evo and I'm loving it. Right now im breaking the car in and its no fun. Well Im looking foward and modding my car so can you fellas give me a heads up where to begin and yet still be my daily driver. Im going out tomorrow to look for some rims, I already purchased my lowering springs which are tiens, I also bought a defi egt, boost, and oil press. I have a greddy turbo timer from my previous car, should I or should I not have it installed? Well thanks a lot guys.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm from Garden Grove in orange county. I also have another question, would a greddy electric boost controller make a difference? My friend gave me his but I don't know if it would help at all, my car is completely stock. Like I said before, what modds should I be getting to start off with. Thank you all once again.

word of advice. leave the electronic boost controllers along. Get a manual boost controller and you won't regret it

Which turbo back do you guys highly recomend?

Too many choices out there.....all depends on your need, tastes, and horsepower cravings...........i personally have the HKS carbon-Ti, sounds good, and puts out decent gains.

It's great to see questions like this in the Newbies section.

Welcome to the board.

Some info on exhaust.

Buschur is the cheapest and makes the most power.
HKS and RMR are 50 state legal.
GReddy TI is the most expensive, lightest and best "Bling Factors"

Do a search in the archives. Everyone has different opinions on what's the best.

I was at a shop today and the owner was trying to sell me a DC downpipe and a magnaflow 3" turbo back, which he said its by far the best turbo exhaust, is that true? Another customer had this install and also the aem intake and got 275whp, did not mention torque! Man there is so many options i dont know where to look, but my main focus is on RRE. Can someone give me some pointers on a good dp. Im palning on buying everything at once and have it installed at RRE. Thanks..

IMO the different on exhaust its mainly the noise level. It's up to you how you choose a system based on either performance, looks or noise level.
All TBE are just about the same here is a thread regarding exhausts and results, the different is not by far
http://www.socalevo.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8950

here is a link on exhaust noise level:
http://www.socalevo.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7671

Base your decision on a DP on how it clears the lower tie bars and oil pan, since some have had issues. Also the quality of the product, most DP are about the same just different manufactor

I know about RRE, but I'm only gonna go there for the bigger mods. I'm looking on getting a mbc and my gauges (defi) installed.

I ahve HKS carbon ti and it is not 50 state legal. They have documnets from the manufacturer, but there is no CARB sticker....

THe Greddy Boost controller will make a difference. However, I ahve heard bad things about the Greddy. I ahve the HKS EVC V

Welcome to the site!

I'm relatively brand new here as well. I opted for the Greddy Evo2 exhaust (nice & quiet at idle, excellent finisht, which is what I wanted, and sits high & tight unlike the HKS systems which to me sag way to low/scrapes etc) and the Helix downpipe. Have fun making your choices, hard to really go wrong its all up to what you like.

I also got the Tein springs. Happy with the back end, but the front end dropped a little too much.

Hope to see you & your Evo around

Cat-backs don't need CARB exemption. The only issue is the sub-95dB level...

yeah its way too early for all those mods you gotta wait out the break in period, its kinda important. also you should look out for what kind of mod path your gonna go, are you aiming for big power like 400hp-500hp swapping out turbo power or daily driver 350hp-400hp power... you'll just end up replacing parts later depending on what your gonna do. The cam gears arent necessary unless your going to be tuning your cams for increased power in different areas of the powerband, the stock gears will work fine. and i have a hallman mbc and it works great. and if your gonna get cams its a good idea to stud the head also but again not necessary.

My goal is to have this car at 340-400whp daily driver, if possible and still being able to pass smog.

Sorry for the delayed response.

Yes, the Greddy is near stock at idle, albeit a deeper tone (thats with the downpipe, I never heard it on its own)

But at WOT the exh/dp combo sounds absolutely incredible, I couldnt be happier.

Thanks for the info. I'm going down to serenitysound and getting a tbe installed along with a turbo xs mbc. They are selling me a magnaflow exhaust, is it any good? Is it loud, does it fit well? Another thing, am I better off with a stock or aftermarket bov or a bypass valve?

you're a good man. tell them that john on socalevo sent you. regarding the bov, they often go with a turbo xs bypass valve because it's more of a sure thing when you up the boost. however, i suggest using the stock one until you notice a boost leak and then switch because you might not leak at all. for the exhaust, i love this piece; if i didnt have obligation for running a dc tbe, my cat-back would be magnaflow ti. good luck. thai and the guys at ssp are great. they'll take care of you.

Hey people, I wanted to know the difference between the regular evo 8 stock bov and the jdm mr bov? Is the mr louder?

Chris in SD
06-01-2005, 08:22 AM
The difference is that the JDM MR BOV is metal, not plastic, and it holds boost MUCH better. That is ~$100 well spent...

As for the noise, it's about the same. The noise level on those BOVs goes up when you install an open-element air filter kit.

Hey people, I wanted to know the difference between the regular evo 8 stock bov and the jdm mr bov? Is the mr louder?

i put the jdm bov on my gsr, i can vouch that my car seems to hold boost better mid to top end, the car feels like it pulls harder to the redline.....but then again it could be in my head, anyway you look at it, its a great investement.

Chris in SD
06-01-2005, 08:42 AM
The fact that the JDM MR BOV holds boost better has been quantified by many people. I had to turn my boost controller down after installing the MR one. It caused my boost gauge to read .1 bar higher, so I must have been leaking with the stock one.

YOu could go with SAFC or you could get a flash or a piggyback ecu. It all depends on your preference. In terms on overall hp increase, its hard to say which will yield better results. Both have their advatnages and disadvantages. Try doing a search
