Not really much to the install...

1. purchase a Zaklee Sightglass Clear Cam Gear Cover

www.zakleecorp.com

2. use a 10mm wrench or ratchet w/ 10mm socket

btw - this cover will fit aftermarket cam gears and evo engines 4-8

Step 1

Unpack your new cover

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10991/INSTALL%20ZakleeCorp%20Clear%20Cam%20Gear%20Cover% 2001.jpg

Step 2

Remove the 4 bolts from each corner of stock cover. Bottom left bolt is the most difficult to remove

Step 3

Set aside old cover

Step 4

Ease in new cover

Step 5

Reuse the stock bolts from the old cover and tighten

Nice post. Clear guard is an alternative to being dangerous and running without one. I killed my power steering when the gears ate though my line while cornering at the track.

Keep in mind also that if anything gets caught between the timing belt and the gear, you could snap it and ruin your motor. On the other hand, you would at least look cool

I think the hp claim is a bit overrated though...

Choice one= be "cool" and risk your motor over random event where something gets stuck in between the belt . IE, you pop your hood to show off your shiny evo motor and your friend leans over and gets his tie stuck in between your belt and the gear

Next thing you know, Your is friends face first into the cam gear... I can provide other examples but it's your car.

Choice two= cover that sucker and don't worry about it...

Goose -

You're asking for trouble leaving the cover off, and I know this from experience. Like the man says, cover that sucker so you can stop worrying about it...

how long before it becomes opaque from road grime?

I like the clear cover, I think on your Evo the CF one looked better because it matches the spark plug cover as well.

Bud -

The Mitsu design makes the entire cam belt drive system pretty much sealed from the outside world. So, any road grime will end up on the outside of the cam gear cover, where is can easily be washed off. If cam timing belt particules are getting on the inside of the cover, it's not a good sign, and be glad you have a clear one so you could see this before something bad happens to your belt.

Update: I just found out that the clear cam gear cover won't fit the IX - Mivec bulge on the intake cam gear. :-(

I'm just going to have to change the mold! ;)

That's gonna suck since the IX is only going to be a 1 generation car....

the only reason i can think of why to leave the cam gears cover off , is to adjust after market cam gears in a tuning session. Other wise you are risking your timing belt from being expose to any damages it can resive by even a small pebble. A lot of guys have blown up motors (different engines) from having their cam gears expose.. you will be suprise how much damage a pebble can do to a timing belt while spining..

Goku - You're one smart guy. I wiped out my crank position sensor when I stupidly left my cover off. :idiot2:

Volcom - I'd put something, either the stock cover, or my clear one on your car. It's trouble leaving it off.

Wont that turn yellow from the heat?

robert5995

Muramasa -

Arcylic yellows, polycarbonate won't, nor will it melt, since the softening temperature for polycarbonate is 375F. If your car gets that hot, you have other problems! I've benn trying to melt or otherwise damage the one on my car for five months now, and it still looks great, and it stays clean inside. Try one, if you don't like it, I'll pay you to send it back. One really good reason to have this clear cam gear cover on your car is to be able to more easily check that your adjustable cam gears have not slipped. This has never happened to me but it would definitely give more peace of mind...

personally i would LOVE to get this to 'bling' up my engine bay but so hard justifying the price :(

yeah this is actually made from same clear polyurethane used in RC cars. the plastic gets fairly close to my nitro engine on the RC car w/ 250-280F temp on the heat sink and it does NOT melt in any way. only thing that sux is these plastic scratch easily so it will haze quickly if the plastic isnt polished once in awhile. great thing is these plastics can be painted nicely once its too scratched :)
