I just bought a digital sound level tester from radio shack. It goes all the way up to 126 decibels. I'm designating this a community use item

So if anybody wants to use it to unofficially test their exhaust system for compliance with the sound level laws shoot me a PM. I'm in Aliso Viejo so if anybody wants to meet up to use the meter I'm game.

i got the same meter, but i use it to tune my home theater system:P
Just make sure you use the same meter placement as the referees do for accuracy.

EDIT. Actually i have the analog one. I think you should return it and get the analog one instead...

You might wanna set up the meter like the norcalevo guys do. Its similar to how the ref's test:
http://www.norcalevo.net/forums/modules.php?set_albumName=album57&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

Recording procedure: car parked in parking lot area free of nearby obstructions and buildings. Camcorder and microphone were placed 45 degrees off-center, about 2' from the exhaust tip and 1' off the ground. Engine was revved to 1500 rpm, then back to idle, then 3000, 5000, and 7000 rpm. Recordings end with approximately 10 seconds of idle.

Sound measurements were made using a hand-held Radio Shack analog sound meter (set on fast response, A weighting, with a stated accuracy of +/- 2 dB) offset at a 45 degree angle from the exhaust tip, 20" away, 10" off the ground. (N.B.: measurements were made at 5300 rpm (three-quarters of redline) instead of the correct 4875 rpm (three-quarters of manufacturer's stated maximum HP RPM) due to misinterpretation of testing specifications.)

**Note, the ref tested my car at 4875RPM

Rino, I think my buddy at Injen still has my stock cat but either way you're free to use it. I can bring it to a meet or something.

Simon, the guy at radio shack told me the accuracy was the same on both units. Do you know the analog one is better for sure? Radio shack employees are kinda clueless...

I'm sure the accuracy is similar, but its easier to read an analog gauge. I.E. have u ever tried to read a digital boost gauge vs an analog gauge?

Yeah I know what you mean but I don't feel like getting the box out of the community dumpster... ;)

the last time i was at my old ref station a few months ago, if i remeber correctly, every car has a certain rpm its tested at. so idle and all other rpm ranges dont matter. and nocalevo is correct about the placement, but cant remember the exact distances.

I too have a Db meter. We just measured CJexJiggy's car last night. Same offer here, if anyone needs to check their car's sound level, I can help you out. I'm just a pm away.

so the refree tests our car at 4875RPM?
and the exhaust has to be 95db or below correct?

I think it's like $30 from Radio Shack.

Not sure where that is, whats the closest place for you off the 5 or the 55? If you don't know where Barranca is, Dyer Rd East turns into ti.
