Do you guys put the car in gear or no? I see a lot of people just keep it in nuetral. I was always taught to put it in gear. What do you guys do and what is better?

I heard that it hurts something to start the car in gear, of course still holding down the clutch.

I normally would leave it in gear but because of my turbo timer, I have no choice but to leave it in neutral..It is always safer to leave it in gear because you never know if the e-brake fails and you are at a very slight incline....

I always leave it in first gear. Hill or not, I'm paranoid! It's been a habit since my old Hyundai Excel had a malfunctioned parking brake and the damn car coasted to its demise a few hundred yards down the hill! :'( That was many moons ago but it still affects my parking habits today.

I always start the car in gear. It shouldn't affect anything since the tranny is completely disengaged from the engine.

on a hill, e-brake + in gear (reverse)

Depends where I am.

If the timer is only going to be on for a few seconds, I normally wait, then put in gear.
Otherwise if it's flat, just the parking break.

I heard somewhere that by law, you're may not leave a running (turbo timed) car unattended and you're supposed to place it in gear/park.

Dunno if that's true or not. It's something I heard a while ago.

this is probably common knownledge, but just in case... when parking a car in gear on a hill, make sure the e-brake is what's holding it, NOT the tranny. meaning, put it in neutral while keeping your foot on the brake, pull the e-brake, then take your foot off the pedal to be sure the e-brake is holding. THEN put the car in gear. typically, you'll notice the car actually rolls back an inch or two when you let off the pedal and allow the e-brake to hold the car. otherwise, the tranny catches first and you're putting constant, undue stress on it, potentially bending a shift fork. being in gear should be a secondary, backup measure.

Incline: e-brake/1st gear/wheels turned away from curb
Decline: e-brake/reverse gear/wheels turned towards curb

No, that was my first car ever. After that little "accident", I snagged a 1984 Buick Regal Vato-mobile! I then inherited a 1992 Toyota Camry. A 2002 (ahem) Honda Civic came next and finally...drum roll...EVO VIII!

I park on my driveway which is at a slight incline. I've noticed that since my brake pads have become worn down that my e-brake doesn't work as well. Probably a fluid thing.

But several (no joke) times now, using just the e-brake, I have had my car roll back down the driveway and into the street with me in the car. Sometimes, if I set the e-brake then bounce a little in the car, my car will "scoot" its way down the driveway too. It's kinda entertaining, but because of this, I ALWAYS put it gear now when I park for real. Of course, I could stop being lazy and just re-adjust the e-brake lever but thats to much work. LOL

Ahh. So the turbo timer is necessary for those times that we get the car up to 9k RPM at sustained intervals while going to the grocery store, curch, work, school right?

Yank the turbo timers and put the car in gear people.
