I think this is one of those cars that we will learn to like. Right now it is ok looking, but with time I am sure it will begin to look better.

Front view definitely looks better than some of the posted pics...I am still not feeling the rear design...R32-R34 were some of the best designs...those Skylines still look more wicked in person than in magazines...

Reposted from http://forums.gtrforums.com/showthread.php?t=318 & http://forums.gtrforums.com/showthread.php?t=307

***Summary for those skimming: Proto is 90% close to final design, due out in the US in late 2007 as a 2008 model, TT V-6 likely, but TT V-8 possible. V6 to displace between 3.5-3.8. Still AWD & AWS(teering). US to be an Infinity car. Price range = ~70k £. ***

Better take a good look at these pictures of Nissan's GT-R Proto. The sharp-edged concept car was the star of last month's Tokyo Motor Show. But a well-placed source at Nissan tells TheCarConnection the Proto is going back under the covers and won't be seen again until late 2007, when the next-generation GT-R goes into production.

Exactly what those technologies will be, Nissan isn't saying, though insiders reveal the production version due out as a 2008 model will likely feature a twin-turbo V-6 displacing somewhere between 3.5 and 3.8 liters. Look for something "in excess of 450 horsepower." Well in excess.

The styling of the GT-R Proto is "80 to 90 percent close to production," according to Nissan Design Director Shiro Nakamura, who attempted to underscore the iconic nature of the new model, while emphasizing both technology and emotionality.
While there's a bit of a Coke-bottle shape to the Proto's profile, the emphasis is on angularity. The greenhouse is low and sharp-edged, something you might expect to see driving off the pages of a Japanese manga comic book. Curiously, the front end of the new concept vehicle reminded more than a few viewers of the Cadillac CTS, especially the tall headlight assembly. The round taillights, meanwhile, hinted just a wee bit of the latest Corvette.

So study these pictures carefully and try to imagine what minor changes will be made before the first all-new GT-R in eight years finally goes into production. Expect the car the reach Japanese showrooms soon after the '07 Tokyo Show, with a U.S. launch in early 2008.

And as Japan's self-imposed 276bhp limit has been forgotten, the GT-R will have at least 400bhp (probably closer to 450bhp). A twin-turbo V6 and a turbo V8 have been considered (Nissan has a normally aspirated V8 in its domestic 5-series rivalling Futa saloon that could be adapted) and it looks likely that the latter option will make it to production; that would break the in-line six-cylinder tradition that runs all the way back to the original 1969 Skyline GT-R, but boost showroom appeal.

The chassis will be more consistent to the GT-R legacy. Nissan feel that it's crucial to retain the GT-R's reputation for advanced technology, so expect to see an even more sophisticated version of the R34 GT-R's electronically controlled ATTESA ET-S PRO four-wheel-drive system working in combination with Super-HICAS four-wheel steering. Rumours suggest that Nissan may even be working on active ride.

The GT-R will be sold worldwide in both right- and left-hand drive. In the US it will be badged Infiniti, but in Europe and the UK (where the Infiniti brand will be launched in around 2008) it will remain under the Nissan banner. Whether this will hamper sales remains to be seen; the company feels the GT-R badge is so strong that customers will look past the Nissan logo and £70K price tag.

That's only an estimate of the final specs, not factual information.

They are still searching for a gearbox manufacturer and the power will likely be closer to 500hp.

The engine is tuned by Cosworth with a suspension setup being dialed in by Lotus. The front is not final... remember, it is only a concept.

Now that Autoweek broke the news that indeed the GT-R will be an Infiniti and around $65K, I've officially put my hat in the ring... Tomorrow I am going to the local Infiniti dealer to put a deposit down and get on the list. O0

My reply from the dealer was there is no official list yet, but he will let me know. I offered to put down $1000 to hold the #1 spot as long as they don't mark it up for presales. I figured that even if I don't end up buying it, I could probably E-Bay my slot for $5-10K... O0

They'll probably have a waiting list once the production model is finalized and appears at a car show somewhere...
