I will be working the Rim of the World Rally (http://www.rimoftheworldrally.com/) again this year April 28-29, 2006. We need voluteers for all sorts of stuff. The rim will be held in Lancaster CA at the Antelope Valley Fair Grounds (http://www.avfair.com/). This event is sponsored by Subaru. Lot's of scooby folks doing their part. Let's show them what the Evo community can do. I had a blast there last year.

Can you explain the whole concept of the rally? I have never been involved with one of these. Please don't refer me to their website. I need the short, EVO-owner explanation. Thanks. :coolsmiley:

A rally is a timed event. Each car takes off at a seperte time staged a few minutes apart from each other. The object is to arrive at check points at a specified time. If you arrive late, you are docked points. If you arrive early you are docked points. So you pretty much have to guess how long it will take to go from point A to point B, then C, then D etc. The coarse map is not disclosed until the drivers are ready to start. It takes place on city streets (cars must obay all laws) and mountain fire roads. There is a navigator or co-driver guiding the driver which way to go. Through out the years, the coarse for the Rim has started in the AV, gone through to Santa Clarita, and Rim of the World. Many different routes in between. There will be spotters all along the way to ensure that people are obeying the laws and making their check points. From the AV fair grounds you can see the start and finish, but the whole coarse takes up many miles. There is usually more than one loop per day. The event starts in the morning and lasts until wee into the night.

There is probably much more to it than that, but that's pretty much the scene of things. Although there are some powerful cars there, the key is in the driving skills of the driver and the navigating skills of the co-driver, and the cars ability to hold up to some pretty rough abuse.

Richard EVO

That's what I was afraid of. Doesn't sound like it's for me. It's unnatural because no one obeys all traffic laws in real life. :2funny:

Yeah, but most of the action takes place in the dirt! Nuthin' better than watch'n people squirt dirt... unless it's you squirtin' dirt!

Cool, make sure to come by the media booth and say hi. I'm the web team captain and I'll be there for most of the 48 hour event. I'll be in the nice warm, dry media booth. Mike W from RRE came to hang out, keep warm and keep me company between pits stops last year. I'm reserving a spot for him this year too! Hear that Mike W?

If you've never seen a rally live, you must go once in your life. It'll help you understand the heritage behind the car we all drive and love, the Lancer Evolution.

There's nothing like being in the middle of the silent, star-filled desert, at night. Miles from everything except cactus, scrub brush and the occasional chirping cricket. Patiently you wait. Then in the distance you see a flash of light bouncing off of the sparse terrain. More silence and then a hint of noise. The sound of a blow-off valve vigorously working overtime. Finally you are ovewhelmed by an explosion of light and sound as you watch the perfection of man and rally machine sliding sideways through a shadow-filled blind corner in the darkness of night. You feel the course mechanical resonance from the engine as the revs rise and fall. The driver searching for traction while the tires spray rocks and sand everywhere, the exhaust perfectly reverbing off of the desert floor. In a matter of minutes, sometimes seconds, it's trails back to full silence as you wait for the next car.

If it doesn't stir something inside you, check for a pulse.* *:smitten:

(unless youre like stupid spectators that sit on the outside of left turn and then are surprised when an evo6 looses control and rolls into the crowd)

there are a couple positions i wouldnt mind volunteering for but i dunno if id get em. maybe ill sign up.... :?

I was a volunteer at the 2004 Gorman Ridge Rally. I collected time stubs (or whatever they call them) from the co-drivers. It was fun and I learned a bit about rally racing. First and foremost is that rally racing is a great way to beat the sh*t out of your car.

Call me girly man, but I would hate to have to make major repairs to my car after every time I raced it. But it was fun to watch.

Maybe I should just stick to karting, LOL!

That's what I was afraid of. Doesn't sound like it's for me. It's unnatural because no one obeys all traffic laws in real life. :2funny:

Actually, the "special stages" that make up the competition part of the rally are run flat out on roads closed to public traffic. On these stages there is no arriving early - fastest time wins; period. It's only on the transit stages on open public roads (to get to/from the special stages) that the cars must hit specific time targets and can't disregard motor vehicle laws.

I've been a co-driver at a Rim a few times. There is a reason that they run a few of the stages only at night - so you can't see how far down you'll go if you drive off the road!

bzzbee2
03-29-2006, 11:53 AM
EVO RS-T is right on with his explanation. Its basically an all out race on the set stages. I have been involved in these type of rallys since i was about 4 years old. (back when Audi's ruled rallying)

Anyway I will be working at this rally as a timing control captain as i have for the past 3 years. So far everyone on my team looks to be driving an EVO. Im still looking for about 4 more volunteers. No experience needed but common sense is required!

http://socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/12257/normal_IMAGE_00016.jpg

For those of you who weren't there this is what basically happened.

A person who most likely worked or helped organize the rally took his lifted truck out onto the rally track and in order to amuse the fans he had a sheriff chase him with his lights on. The fans were going nuts while watching this because nobody knew if it was staged or not. The truck got into a water pit area and started to slow down until he came to a complete stop. The sheriff was following the truck at a pretty high speed and did not have enough time to react to the truck stopping. The end result is what you see in the pics. The truck was lifted pretty high so the bumper basically went right into the engine of the sheriff's vechile.

Muahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :2funny:

So the deputy sheriff has to go to his boss Monday morning and explain how he cracked up his on-duty SUV while goofing around at a rally with a bunch of speeders, boy racers and miscreants? I love it.

The sheriff was in shock after the accident. He had a surprised/ashamed/shitting bricks look on his face. They had to put another truck in front of the sheriff's truck so that people would stop taking pictures and walk away from the scene.

Great meeting you to Neil! To bad indianevodriver didn't pop his head in and say howdy. 15 hours today, 12 hours yesterday, I'm glad this only happens once a year. I'm getting to be a regular and Mrs Wav and I feel like part of the Rim family now.

The driver of the 4x4 was the owner of the track. He leases the property from the city, paid for the bleachers to be built and leases it out for events like this. The driver of the sheriff SUV was a part time reserve officer/friend of the track owner. The SUV was just donated to the city last week :-o The track owner has accepted full responsibility for the damages. The cops Sgt came over to check things out and basically agreed that it was an accident. This kinda stuff right there is funny, I don't care who you are, you gotta just stop and laugh! The truck was actually the track owners wife who was sitting shotgun during the ordeal. Now she didn't find much humor at all in this exhibition.

I've been rear-ended before and even at low speeds your body may sustain long-term or permanent damage. Ask me how I know. The track owners wife was riding shotgun and likely will at minimum suffer a pretty sore neck. Both air bags deployed in the Expedition, so it was a pretty hard hit for those guys also. Air bag deployment often causes cuts and bruises, so they are likely also dealing with some pain. They had just finished treating my friend who cut her hand chasing down and diving onto the rocks for a time card that had blown away. Somehow I don't find any of it funny. They were there volunteering their personal time to deal with injuries not out stopping Evo drivers that complain on this board when they run illegal modifications and get caught. They didn't deserve any of that. By the way those guys were from search and rescue, guys that try to help people. End rant.

I wouldn't want to see anyone get hurt, and it's a shame that a search and rescue vehicle was damaged. However witnessing the incident as a spectator in the grandstands, was classic comedy reminiscent of the Keystone Cops era. :police:
