i just found a new potential daily driver in an 86 944 6-cyl coupe. i took it for a drive and it pulls pretty well but i want some help either rebuilding the motor and tranny or replacing those two things after i buy. the buy is a steal but i still want something somewhat reliable and safe to drive. if anyone knows of a shop and/or tuners that work with specifically porsches in the oc area, please let me know. i would like to buy the car in the next week. thanks guys!

Here's a good shop in WLA. Actually, the owner of the shop is the chief driving instructor for EOC O0

Porsche never made a 6 cylinder 944, the engine is a 2.5L inline 4 cylinder 8 valve motor that makes about 155HP. The later S2 engines were 16 valve and made about 208hp. The last engines they made were a 3.0L 4 cylinder as well. The turbo versions were made from 1985 and had about 220hp. In 1988 they made a Turbo S that had about 250hp. Very good handling car, the transmission just like the new vetter is in the rear for almost 50/50 weight distribution.

My friend has had his 944 since 1996 and it has been mostly reliable. Parts are expensive though and a lot of them are getting hard to find.
