Hi,

I am really interested in cars right now and I want to gain a better and more in-depth understanding of how a car engine works. My question to you all is: which engine is the easiest to work in, learn a lot from, and can be bought for under $3000 (with chassis)?

Thank you all and im looking forward to your replies !

Before you tear apart a perfectly good engine:

you can learn on any D series honda car, it's a good cheap start. Its where I learned by taking apart, putting back together, unfortunately thats about where I stopped.

If you want to work on a 4g63 turbo, get a 1G Eclipse.

Chevy 350 V8 - it's big, it's easy to get into, there are plenty of spare parts, etc. etc. I know it's not all t00ner, but it is the engine to learn on... If you want an OHC engine, you can probably find a Ford modular V8 out of a Mustang pretty cheap, too.

1g eclipse, corolla (if you can find the ae models, 1985-1992, should be fun), any civic, any integra....mostly fwd 4-cyl motors...

Thank you all for your replies. I'll look into each car you guys suggested. How do you guys feel about a KA24DE from a 1990 Nissan 240SX? Theres one thats selling for around $2000 locally.

sure you can learn a lot from that motor...one of my good friends started out learning stick and modding in a 240 (95 s14). he ended up getting an sr20 swap but i dont see anything wrong with starting out in a car like this. if you're buying the car simply to beat it up and learn from it, i suggest buying as old as possible so you wont feel as bad fking it up and it's cheaper than $2k(180sx rps13). good luck!

+1 on The Elcilpse. I have a 1g eagle talon an the things i have done to that poor engine. Also the 4g63 has endless tuning possibilities.

Mando on the DSM 4g63; 1 or 2g.* Parts for days, and that's just at the Pic-a-Part.
So cheap and so easy to make power.
