top gear tested something fast, really fast

we've all seen the top gear episode where the FQ400 keeps up with a murcielago. we saw that it has pretty mean turbo lag, but if put in the hands of a capable driver. it did a 1-24.9 around their test track.

thugline's beloved zonda manages 1-23.8

well it seems i stumbled upon some other car, a much faster car, that was pushed around Top Gear's track for a time by the stig. the 2004 Renault F1 car. yes thats right, a F1 car.

the fastest road cars in the world manage in the low 1:20's but where do the fastest cars of all time place? it went round in 59.00

to put that into perspective, thats a 26 second difference between the FQ400 - a very fast car in its own right. but what would this same time difference look like with the FQ400 being the ultimate performer racing against a lesser? top gear hasn't tested a car that was slow enough to be 25 seconds behind an FQ400.

but, the zonda f, maserati MC 12, and enzo basically hit 1-19.0, 20 seconds slower than them would be a bently arnage, but for comparison even a civic type R (civic si to us) is 5 seconds too fast.


verdict: the power of a F1 car is simply amazing. the comparison of the renault to the FQ400 is similar to racing a slow civic SI with an enzo/zonda f/maserati MC 12

i think it was like 4th fastest considering its like 300k cheaper then the cars faster then it thats pritty impressive.

F1 cars rock.

there are two videos online that showcase that very fact. one is a ferrari video of a Fiat, a F550 Maranello and Schuey in an F1 car. the Fiat gets a head start, the F550 a few seconds later, and the F1 almost a minute afterwards.

it shows the F1 car passing both just as they neared the finish line.

the second video is of the MP4-12 driven by David Coulthard against a Mercedes A class and E-Class AMG. same thing, both weaker cars (if you can dare call an AMG car "weak") get a head start and DC catches up to them on the final two corners.

IIRC the Atom did a 1:18ish, while the Enzo was a 1:19 and the Carrera GT was a 1:20. Did they test another Renault F1? I remember Stig drove one like 2 seasons ago on Top Gear.

the test im referring to was the R24, i really dont know the designations for renaults (but i know ferrari ones if that counts ;) ) didnt notice any postings so i decided to post this now, even if it may be 2 seasons old.

what im puzzled about. their site says they tested a sea harrier (somewhere around 30 seconds)

um, a sea harrier is an airplane the best i can figure. maybe someone wanna help out on confirming this, or post a link of the video?

the stig is prob ether a current F1 driver or an ex-F1 driver so it does really surprise me. that or they also have more then one stig that one could have been one of the Renault drivers.

remember when james kay made an apperarnce to drive the murcie agains the FQ? if i had to pick one person of the lot, i would put money on james kay being the stig. british touring car champ - knows what he's doing behind a wheel. the whole british pride thing, would make him perfect for top gear
