with prices on the rise and prospects of $4 a gallon in the very near future, is anybody thinking about giving up the evo for something with better gas milage?

getting like 180 miles a tank with mixed driving, probably doesn't help there's lot of spurts of 100mph on the freeway...I really try to cruise at 80, but it's hard...I'm weak!* *

it helps that i have a beater that gets mpg in the high 20's, call the mazda "87" for 87 octane!

so I hear the real problem is refining capacity...so why ain't I hearing about new refinaries getting built here in the desert or something?!! pissing me off!!!* We need to start drilling more of our own oil and at the sametime* become more fuel efficient.* The price jump is too large to be caused by "natural" reasons! *argghh!* :tickedoff:

the most miles i juiced out of evo on coserviative driving was 307 miles i was damn serprised and scared that i was gonna be stranded.i think i could have juiced more out of it but there was this STi on the 15 that i couldnt resist playing with but my average milage until im empty is about 200 give or take 25 miles depending on how my driving mood is

I have had my evo for 35000 miles. *I have run Zylene and 100 from 13 to 22 psi.
My gas mileage is 20 plus or minus one. *Then my girlfriend* drives through one whole tank coming home from Ventura to Hesperia with boost set to 21 psi. *30 mpg. *I guess the problem is me. *(It did take a little longer than usual and the car never saw 21 the whole way.)

Damn talk about a massive flux... 180 and 334. Before my tune I got about 220 miles. I'm looking at about 230-240 this time. With a lot of freeway that gets pushed to 260 - 280. I have a heavy foot though too... I don't think on my worst day of lead foot I would get 180 miles.

I have *averaged 22 mpg since I got the car. Only once did I get 19 mpg and that was due to lugging the car in low gear and testing for boost cut at WOT. My best tank ever was 23.2 mpg but that was with 90% freeway driving. I would love to know how guys are tuning their cars to run on 87 octane and getting 400 miles per tank.

I rarely check my mileage. When the orange light comes on I look for the nearest Union 76 station. Gas and tires (7 sets in 52,000 miles) are the high price of Evo ownership....but the grin I get every time I drive is priceless. Today I had the best time and went through 3/4 tank of gas in 70 miles....at Streets Of Willow.

SWEET!!!! Lift kit the Evo! What do you think? 6" lift? My sister is getting a new raised truck...This would piss her off. Selling her Cobra and won't even try to race me, and going dirt. That would be some funny ass shit to thumb my nose at her that way too.

28mpg wtf you are liar!!!! :D

which talkin about playa...didn't you tell me you get 28 mpg with the works flash? ;)

i have gas receipts to prove it...every fill up i write down the miles on the OD on the receipt

then i compare the current fill up with the previous fill up and do the math

pwnd suckas!!!

nah...i think driving habits and car setup does play a factor

1) alignment done by mueller...tuned for fwy driving / increase tire life
2) 36 psi all around
3) i hardly use the brakes... mad driver skills / cough good traffic flow cough :crazy2:

i'm not engine braking by downshifting to slow the car down...i just let the car stay in current gear and let it slow down by itself in the current gear...then downshift because i would be lugging the engine when it's time to get on the gas...no i'm not leaving a large gap that people can cut in front of me easily...so i'm not pissing off the people behind me

more like confusing them on why i'm not using my brakes...probably think my brake lights are out

i'm surprised whenever i'm a passenger in someone's car...by how often they use the brakes...on my TEG i put on 53K when i owned it...i replaced the tires right away when i bought it used...when i sold it...tires still had 65% thread...still had original brake pads and plenty of meat left...it was an auto ;)

what's the record for an evo with factory brake pads :buck2:

On a normal tank I get ~200 miles per 12 gallons. Thats almost all stop 'n go traffic on the 55 freeway and/or lotsa surface street driving.

On my ABSOLUTELY BEST tank I drove the entire tank on the freeway at crusing speed (75ish) and never once went into positive boost. I got 220 miles on the same 12 gallons.

My car has been getting this kind of gas mileage since the day I drove it off the lot. Its a totally stock IX (I have a turbo timer/boost guage, thats it).

with prices on the rise and prospects of $4 a gallon in the very near future, is anybody thinking about giving up the evo for something with better gas milage?

like the honda civic DINO addition.

and i know somewhere in this post... someone has said... no matter what you drive.. gas will go up.. gass will be high... if we all drive hybrids.. gas goes up.. because we dont use it as much.. if we all drive gas guzzlers... the price will still be what it is... heck... if you were smart freak buying a honda .....car?!?!? buy a honda bike....(not the really stupid fast one of course lol)....

have fun while you can... maintenance and day to day gas and things like that come along at a price... granted the price is higher..but can you do what you do in a bone stock civic vs... an evo.... (not to sound like a you know what in da mud.... but you get what you pay for.... and yes that goes for women too LOL... and vice versa....)

Hey, 25 mpg wasn't easy. It took me nine months to finally get that. It was pretty much all freeway miles going to my family's Thanksgiving party in Northridge with most of it being during nighttime or at least not during the hottest point of the day, plus I wasn't running A/C. Traffic was minimal, and I filled up right off the freeway. However, my daily commute to work is a six-mile freeway drive each way, and doing that usually gets me right around 20 mpg.

Interesting...I drive 70% fwy and 30% street. On the fwy I drive between 65-70 mph and on the street I shift @ 3000 rpm. I get around 23-24 mpg. Right now I am @ 255 miles with a 1/4 tank of gas left to burn.

It is possible that you are getting into boost before you get to your target speed of 65-70 or your target rpm on the street. Getting into boost usually kills your mileage. When I do 3rd gear 2500-7500 rpm pulls my mileage drops from 23-24 to 22-21 mpg.

Even if you do all freeway, there are a lot of factors that come into play.

One long trip or two separate long freeway drives (like driving to someone's house then leaving a couple hours later) at cooler temperatures (say, between sunset and sunrise) steadily driving at 70-75 mph in top gear, no A/C... 25 mpg.
A/C will put you at 24-24.5 mpg.
A little bit of stop-and-go thrown into an otherwise fine freeway trip will put you at 23.5-24 mpg.
A/C and some stop-and-go will probably put you right at 23.
Having a little fun will keep you below 24, as does driving at anything above 80.
Driving at 100 mph, on the other hand, puts you right at about 19.5-20 mpg.

I have MS Excel files with all objective details of every tank of gas, and based on the date I pretty much know where I was going and how I was driving.

Here's the thing... while I really notice dips in mpg whenever I have a little fun, the reason why I seem to consistently average about 20-21 mpg is because my drive to work is mostly freeway, and on days I don't work I typically drive out to family gatherings (which can be anywhere from 40-120 miles from me... all freeway). That combined with me not having time to ever go to any race tracks is why my mpg is alright.

lets see...i have class in the morning so im either leaving my house around 7-8am. the latest in at school is 12:30, with the exception of thursday (i leave school at almost 2pm). thats just about all i drive the car on the weekdays. on the weekends, i drive it a little also. as for traffic on the freeway, the speeds in the morning are practically constant, and my drive back home is constant all the way. my A/C is not always on since it's been cold. oh, and i dont have fun unless necessary since im already getting worse mpg than most of the people i see.

with that said, 23mpg seems out of range for me. lol. hopefully it's because i have one of the stronger engines O0

...however, for most people 20ish mpg is a downgrade. i came from my bmw which got 16.0-16.4 mpg (at one point it was getting 8mpg wtf, and 12 but it eventually went up to 16 after i tuned it up and stuff)...i drove it like i stole it :skid: lol. evo is different, too many cops looking at you :-(

Driving like i wanna save gas. Shift around 4k and don't stomp on the gas.

Mods are intake , exhaust , HKS BOV.

I had a EVO IX MR with 8k getting 180-190 miles. Then traded it back for a EVO IX MR SE (Long Story with the trade, i wouldn't just kept the IX MR). Then i got the IX MR SE i have about 400 miles, and its the same thing so far.

I'm gonna get it tuned after i get a couple other parts together.

j_nizzle

gravel, the tune will help you significantly...i was in your shoes too. the intake is the culprit for your horrible mileage. you said you have the blitz, those are probably the worst aftermarket filters you can put on your car. if you swap it out for a k&n or of the like, you might notice a difference. you're also shifting a lot higher than you need to...i rev to 3k and shift and try to stay out of boost on the street...when accelerating on the freeway, i tend to go into boost and shift around 4.5K or higher.

i get 250+ miles to the tank on my 03.

lets see...i have class in the morning so im either leaving my house around 7-8am. the latest in at school is 12:30, with the exception of thursday (i leave school at almost 2pm). thats just about all i drive the car on the weekdays. on the weekends, i drive it a little also. as for traffic on the freeway, the speeds in the morning are practically constant, and my drive back home is constant all the way. my A/C is not always on since it's been cold. oh, and i dont have fun unless necessary since im already getting worse mpg than most of the people i see.

with that said, 23mpg seems out of range for me. lol. hopefully it's because i have one of the stronger engines O0

...however, for most people 20ish mpg is a downgrade. i came from my bmw which got 16.0-16.4 mpg (at one point it was getting 8mpg wtf, and 12 but it eventually went up to 16 after i tuned it up and stuff)...i drove it like i stole it :skid: lol. evo is different, too many cops looking at you :-(

But here's the thing... I don't know how far you live from school, but while it might be mostly freeway miles, it's broken up into a ton of separate trips back and forth throughout the tank of gas. My six-mile drive to work is 90% freeway (pretty much always 75 mph going there and back), but since it's short and I do it frequently, that means the car has to start up, warm up, then drive, then do it all over again several times throughout the course of the week. With this type of driving, I would probably yield 19.5-20.5 mpg.

I tried the Apexi intake but didn't like the feel of it. The Blitz unit was much better in my opinion. I'll try shifting earlier and see what happens. But hearing the exhaust at 4k + is hard to avoid. But i like the idea of 250 miles.

180-190 Miles per Tank. I don't how you guys are doing it with over 200 miles on the tank. Even if i don't boost, i get around the same mileage under 200.
you got mods? that could be the diff. ive noticed that how open the throttle is depends too. also if you are cruising above or at 3k rpm MIVEC is in effect and that takes gas.. i found with my MR staying around 2700 is good.. shifting at like 2500.. pay attention to your thottle. and your boost gage.. it tought me how to contole my gas consumtoin.

so if im at 3k mivec is working. if i drive at like 2800-2900rpm i'm going like 62ish mph

I wish I could complain but it's 10.7 miles from my garage to where I park my car on base to go to work. I fill up maybe once every 2 weeks with 76. The other day it was $3.09 a gallon. Im hoping to garage the Evo in the next few weeks and go back to driving my SUV since Im getting the wife a new Lancer. I missed my SUV. But some of you claim to get 20 mpg regardless of where you drive. I just cant see that happening. I tried driving like an old man and never boosting & the best I got on the street was 17-18 mpg. I get on average 23mpg... I drive approx 250 miles and spend about $30 a week on gas... I'm guessing my mileage is this good only because most of my commute is traveling less than 5 mph and I almost never boost my car. How sad.

Ive never actually seen what I could get out of a full tank, but I imagine it could be pretty decent. I used to have a '01 VW golf and once I drove like a granny just to max out my tank of gas... i ended up getting 365 miles off one tank... wish i could do that in the evo.

Yeah,
For me the way to measure is to reset trip odometer at fill-up then on next fill up note the number of miles driven and divide by the amount of gas it cost to fill up again and that will equal your MPG. I drive all backroads to work and its got some hills so I end up between 15-20 mpg (big variance ,I know) depending on how I drive. My wife drives a v6 twin turbo that weighs 1000 lbs more and she gets better or same mileage (19.2 mpg mostly highway) >:(
In all seriousness it is worth it to me for the fun factor of driving and there is no way I can stay out of the boost.

If gas mileage was criteria for me buying a car then I woulda bought a little hybrid. I like driving to me the extra money spent is worth it.

Besides I get better gas mileage in the EVO than with ny old Cobra. My Porsche (when running ;) only gets 12-15 mpg) so the EVO gets great mileage compared to the other so called performance cars.

I don't pay attention, it comes with the car we drive. When it needs gas I put it in.

+1 i dont really pay attention, except for the fact that i fill $20 on 91octane in the morning and by next morning, i gotta fill again -_-.

The weirdest thing happened to me. I was getting 22-23mpg on mainly feeway driving, but when I got my Dp, CBE & K&N drop in, I cant even get to it 22 anymore. Im lucky if I can get it to 20mpg. Does anyone know why and if its normal? I would have thought since im making everything less restrictive it would be better for the car.

so since people are claiming 20+ mpg, are you guys getting close to 280 to the tank?Â* ive never came close to that ever.Â* my best was 250ish being almost completely empty with the light on.Â* and that was like 95% highway driving. my car is bone stock and i cant even imagine getting 280. :-(.........But in the end, i bought an evo, not a prius. 17mpg is killing me so bad with the price of gas now. i find my self driving my gf's auto 30mpg civic more and more now.
i mean the evo cost me $50.00 in gas to drive 200miles and its really starting to hurt bad.

297.8 miles on my last tank, which worked out to 21.5 MPG - 13.86 gallons to fill it up - talk about cutting it close!
'05 RS - I think not having the spoiler helps MPG. Usually, anything that helps create downforce, isn't good for MPG.
Best MPG is: 23.2; 302.6 miles; 13.03 gallons added on my '06 MR - I think the sixth gear helps vs. 5-Spd., even though window sticker says otherwise. My '06 GSR revs higher at 80 mph (in fifth) than both my '05 RS & the MR.

It'd be really cool if someone could mod/tune their Evo to get somewhere close to 28-30mpg, and not degrade the performance too much. That's more impressive to me than some sort of hybrid contraption that gets 40mpg w/only 100 hp!

i can get around 200-250 on city driving and when i take my cruises to palmdale i average around 280 every trip.
this 50.00 fill up is really starting to kill me tho 10$ a day to go to work

28mpg is impossible in the evo. my gf's 2000 auto civic only gets 28-30 and that thing is slow as hell. with the evo i have to spend $25 a day on gas!!! 17mpg blows!!

orbit is correct... when u do take off your wing.. it does creat less downforce and you will notice in a straight line u feel a little quicker and yes the mpg does go up a little.. however.. unless u got coil overs.. you will notice your car will not handle like it should... (if your a gsr or mr dude...) it does make a difference...i dont care who flames that statement...LOL

and if your really at odds on mpg... shit boost lower... turn your ebc off or turn your mbc down....

Huh? :idiot2:Â* Maybe it does, but only at speeds in which the wing would play a positive role...

i should have known you would be the first.... like i said... mr... i got no wing and i didnt notice anything...

You're right. At speeds when the wing generates downforce (typically freeway speeds), the downforce is pushing the rear end of your car down, which, simply put, acts like extra weight in your trunk, which negatively affects mpg, but not in a huge way.

Regarding handling, you're also right, as the old issue of Motor Trend where they compared the three different '05 VIIIs to one another stated that the RS's lower slalom speed (slightly under 70 mph) may be due to the lack of a wing that helps keep the rear end planted, while the VIII and MR were both slaloming slightly above 70 mph.

man... i forgot all about that issue... i read the same thing.. but as you can tell... between me and jap_whip he never believes a thing i say without the facts to back it up...

most of the time if u drive your car.. vs.. man-handling it.. you will notice little things....

147 miles to the Tank. This was a fun week.

Normally I get ~210 miles to the tank. I try to drive granny style but I.....I drive a Bug during work all day so when I get in my Evo I have making up to do. Makes me feel alive again! It is so worth it!

I declined a job in downtown LA because the money wasn't going to be enough to warrant driving my Evo that distance 4 days a week. I'm looking into a bike...
