Greetings..

First of all, I must admit I know very little about cars and obviously the Evolution as well.

I was recently given a used 2003 EVO from a friend leaving the country and I've been just using 87 gas on it due to the darn gas prices. From reading the forums here..it looks like everyone is using 91? Is this required to maintain the engine or just something to get better performance?

Thanks in advance for helping out this newbie.

you may want to post this elsewhere. the section you've posted this in is for newbs to introduce themselves to socal... try tech talk maybe...

by the way i know theres a few people on here that have their car tuned for 87 octane.

Thanks for the info...however technically I AM a new EVO owner so I figured I'd post it here. Modified the title accordingly. :)

Yes you are going to ruin your engine. Quit being cheap and put 91 in. BTW, 93 is recommended, so even Cali 91 is a compromise.

ok. so on average premium cost 20 cents more than regular... so reguardless of the price of gas...

(20 cents per gallon)x(12 gallons)= (2.40 dollars per tank extra)

just buy premium because its not entirely safe to run a car that has this much boost on 87.

p.s. most of the people ive seen tuned for 87 are running alcohol injection.

i take it the evo is just bone stock. if you can't read, everytime you fill up the gass you'll see a label "Premium fuel only"
filling in 87oct and going on boost all the time.. your engine is going to blow

wow I didn't even know the EVO would run on 87, my old SHO was chipped and would barely run on 87 and bog like crazy.* Found out the hard way when this loser in oregon put the wrong gas in my car (I think they were full service only).* Good to know if you're in a pinch the EVO will run.* :-o

Is there any places in CA that have 93 octane?* I know I found some in vegas.

I heard that if you're going to run 87 octane, you have to mix in 2 TBSP of sugar for every gallon.

Running Lower Octane on Stock Boost without proper Tuning you are risking detonation (knocking) which increases your chance to "Blow" your motor.
We still have problems with Knock even on 91. So its Not safe at all in your situation to be running 87.
