The next C is the Lancer, due in the first quarter of 2007, followed by the next Evo and then another unnamed C-segment variant. The latter might be a hatchback for Europe derived from the Frankfurt show car, but who knows?
All the above-mentioned C-segment Mitsubishis will be available with All-Wheel Control, Mitsu’s take on all-wheel drive, Kurihara said. Evos will get Super All-Wheel Control, which adds sensors for yaw rate, engine torque and brake pressure to better control active center and rear differentials. The next Evo will also get active steering control.
We drove today’s Evos with and without S-AWC and active steering on an autocross course in Japan and actually preferred the car without—not even counting the added cost of such a system. Engineers said the model we drove was under development but would go on Evo X in the 2008 model year. They said the benefits are more apparent on a higher-speed course.
