I'm calling the bs flag still. Show me an R34 or R32 with a real registration for California (not specially contrsucted vehicle reg, dealer plates or registered in another state) and I'll get one. Motorex couldn't do it no one else could. When I use to hang out there every R34 had a dealer plate. Even that one guy that drives the gray one that hangs out at the torrance cross roads has dealer plates. The only car that can pass EPA and DOT is the R33.

Hey Kirr...I was real interested a couple of years ago in a skyline....and my buddy brokers high end cars...so it is possible and seeing I am in the Military and can plate it in Tenn its too easy. Then I looked into the maintenance of a used car I paid 50K for. Its not worth it. That shit would make upkeeping the EVO like a Geo Metro...its gonna always be a novelty cause they are hard to come by....but like said previously an GT-S with a R motor is still a GTS. You wouldnt call a Lancer an EVO cause you turbo it would you?

You better read the sidebar story in the August issue of Sport Compact Car on page 68. Apparently the government has rescinded the legal status of ALL Skyline GT-Rs except for the 1996-1998 R33 models. I wouldn't buy one right now unless I was sure it could remain in the country. I'd also expect to see bargain prices on them (relatively speaking) from smart owners who do not want to get stuck with a vehicle they can't re-register and could possibly lose to the DOT.

wj4
06-09-2006, 06:10 PM
what are you going to insure the car under and where will you go for repairs/maintenance?
i know 2 ppl who bought r33s from motorex, both sold theirs already because they felt it wasnt worth the headache.

speedracer2169
06-09-2006, 06:14 PM
Well insuraing the car is not hard. There are insurance company that deal with vintage and rare cars that'll take care of that. As far as maintance most parts are easy to find if you know where to look for them i.e. signal auto, autobacs, xs engineering, rb motoring etc..

Kirrsace

if it is already registered when u need to renew your registration you shouldnt have a problem.

Right, the DOT has the upper hand. Registering these things with 'connections' will only create problems. Probably an expensive one at that when you first get pulled over.

You realize vintage and rare cars are not cheap to insure? Is it really worth paying out the ass for insurance on a nissan. This thread is gay.

ding ding ding we have a winnar!

the issue is that 96+ vehicles require a functioning obd2 system, which to my knowledge, has not appeared.

most motorex cars are registered as 95 r33's, skirting the federal obd2 requirement.

therefore, no "legal" skylines can be brought in anymore.

Well if any of you DO get a Skyline, The place to take it to for work is XS-Engineering. At any time I have been there they have had several in there. Also I bet they would know if people could or could not get them registered here that easy. *I* would really dig having one. Of course a few years ago the Evo was on a similar wish list.

The Tustin meet last night? I saw it and wouldn't do it. It's a GTS!

What you talking about?? GTS is perfect RWD Model and cheaper! Ok it does only come with a single turbo, but dude not everyone wants AWD!! I would purchase a GTS over a GTR all day. Everyone has their personal preference.

Also Registering Japanese cars in the United States is possible. I did not hire any company to do it for me, I just did the research and got my government vin number and registered the car myself

if you werent being sarcastic, these shops see all sorts of cars on a daily basis, whether it be the big power skyline/supra variety, to civics, subies, evos, etc. they are all-around shops more so than specific shops.

The ONLY Skyline that is approved by the NTHA for importation is the R33... however, it must be legalized by the registered importer to be legal. The RI then assumes all legal responsibilities, not Nissan. As said, Motorex is no longer in business, but there are other's like RBmotoring who can still import them.

I don't know how they are treating prior legalized Skylines in the US, such as the R32 and R34... I wouldn't bother with one unless its for race only.

As to why the GTR is so great... engine is beast + AWD = big power w/ traction. A Supra has no traction at big power levels, so it becomes only a highway racer or a dyno queen. The EVO pwnz all cuz its got big power w/ traction and it weighs less than the GTR's... this is why it has the record for Tsukuba circuit Time Attack's in Japan.
