This is assuming you are running stock sized tires on each car.

For gas milage considerations, here is a break down top gear RPM at various cruiseing speeds on the highway.

speed . . . AWD DSM. . . . . EVO VIII. . . . . EVO IX. . . . . EVO MR

55 . . . . . . . . 2425 . . . . . . . . 2365 . . . . . . . 2500 . . . . . . .2305

60 . . . . . . . . 2645 . . . . . . . . 2580 . . . . . . . 2730 . . . . . . .2515

65 . . . . . . . . 2865 . . . . . . . . 2795 . . . . . . . 2955 . . . . . . .2720

70 . . . . . . . . 3085 . . . . . . . . 3010 . . . . . . . 3185 . . . . . . .2930

75 . . . . . . . . 3310 . . . . . . . . 3230 . . . . . . . 3410 . . . . . . .3140

80 . . . . . . . . 3530 . . . . . . . . 3440 . . . . . . . 3640 . . . . . . .3350

85 . . . . . . . . 3750 . . . . . . . . 3660 . . . . . . . 3865 . . . . . . .3560

And for full throttle acceleration considerations, here is a break down of what speed you are going at the top of each gear just befor shifting to the next higher gear (assuming shifting at stock redline of 7,000 RPM) and what RPM you enter the next higher gear at.

Gear . . . . AWD DSM. . . . . . . EVO VIII. . . . . . . . EVO IX. . . . . . . . EVO MR

1st . . . . . 34.4 (3800) . . . . . 40.0 (4700) . . . . 42.1 (4900) . . . .39.8 (4700)

2nd . . . . . 62.8 (4650) . . . . 60.1 (5150) . . . . 60.1 (5200) . . . .59.6 (5200)

3rd . . . . . 94.8 (5250) . . . . . 83.2 (5150) . . . . 81.1 (5300) . . . .80.8 (5350)

4th . . . . . 126.9 (5600) . . . 113.6 (4900) . . . 106.9 (4850) . . . .105.3 (5500)

5th . . . . . 158.7 (N/A) . . . . 162.7 (N/A) . . . . 153.9 (N/A) . . . . .133.7 (5600)

6th . . . . . N/A (N/A) . . . . . . . . N/A (N/A) . . . . . . N/A (N/A) . . . . .167.1 (N/A)

PS: Anyone wants the Exel file I used for calculating the speeds (based on tire diameter, gear ratio's, and final drive ratio) PM me with your e-mail address.

Or Talon. I'm assuming this is the second generation DSMs. That right?

the gearing on the viii mr and ix mr are the same? wow i hit over 6k rpm in 5th on my mr but i didnt look at the speedo just the tach. apparently i was going pretty fast

There is no speed governor on USDM EVOs... Well technically there IS a governor function, but it is set to 510kmh from the factory...

The 8 and 9 gearing is the same. The calcs were probably done using the tachometer, which is off by a couple hundred RPM from car to car. Not to mention the vehicle speed varies a bit as well.

Easier to just count the teeth on the gears, in which case you can see they are the same.

A popular mod for the DSMs is to use the EVO3 5th gear which is slightly taller. I have one in my Eclipse.

How do we get this gear?

anyhow looks like the 8 tranny is superior for drag racing purposes....

I would rebuild my 8 tranny with a 9 1st gear and maybe the evo 3 5th gear

wow so basically the 6speed transmission of the MR is pretty useless unless your into top speed driving... interesting

can you compare these to the EVO VII JDM 5spd GSR and the RS version?

I talked to Jon at TRE (Team RIP) and he really loves the center diff. spider gears in the Evo compared to the old DSM's which would commonly blow out. He said they were thicker and larger and the overall just a better tranny all the way around. I called his shop because I will be looking for an Evo soon (for a DD and drag racing) and found a great deal on an MR with a blown tranny. I asked his opinion on which tranny would be better (5-spd or 6-spd) for drag racing and he said he would recommend the 5-spd if I were to go drag racing with one. His website as well as John Shepherd's, will tell you commonly upgraded items for the Evo tranny.

So is it me or is the evo 9 3 and 4th suck? or is it just 4th? I keep hearing of people have to shift at the end of the 1/4 or bounce off the rev limiter? So basically the evo 8 is better for drag then the 9 as far as tranny goes?

Here are some good spreadsheets showing MPH at different RPM's . LOLÂ* Reminds me of when my Speedo was broke in my old porsche I had to tape a little chart on dash so I would know how fast I was going at a given rpm in a given gear
to avoid tickets...

I tried to copy the images into this post but couldn't get the size viewable (I'm lame that way).Â* Â*Go to this thread on EvoM and check out the spreadsheets and charts. Good Stuff

so why is there so much difference between evo IX and MR? is it 5spd, 6spd?

IX is a 5 speed and mr is a 6speed
