i dont know lol. rob was telling me about this setup that uses 1g coil packs and wires... and they just run the wires to the plugs and the actual coils are mounted underneath the strut bar...

or something haha

yeah that's the coil on plug setup (cop). you'd also need a driver for those coils. there's a how to in the how to section. i'm sure that roadrace can help you figure it all out.

We have done a few different set ups. There are a few problems with the stock ignition set up. Mostly because of where all the heat in the motor is. They built the ignitor into the top of the coil and put it in the absolute hottest part of the motor, right on top. I have no idea what some of the coil on plug set ups that are available are trying to fix by keeping the ignitors there.

One fix that has worked for a while is 1G Eclipse coil packs, modified 1G Magnacor plug wires and use the AEM CDI for the ignitor. AEM had some problems with the CD2I about 18 months ago and we have not done any recently. The new replacement AEM Twin Power CDI just became available after a year of testing. THis requires cutting and splicing into the wire harness and is a bit more difficult to put back to stock.

The second we are playing with is something from Dynacoil. THey are motorcycle ignition people that happen to have a DSM guy working there. They came up with a plug in CDI and we found a more robust Mitsubishi COP coil with out the ignitor built into it. That is in beta testing now for reliability. Very nice direct plug in system that can go right back to stock.

Actuall they have 2 DSM guy working there. :mitsu:

Like Mike said the second one is still in beta phase. There's 2 EVO out there is running around with this setup. Beta, because we're testing long term reliability. The coils you can pick up from your favorite or local Mitsubishi dealer. They're off from a Montero. Direct bolt on and you can keep the factory plug/coil cover. Only thing you need to do is swap the spark plug boot over. Here's the catch for who wish to tackle this yourself. Try tracking down the plug that goes to the Montero coil, your factory harness, and "decipher" the wiring schematic to wire in a ignitor. If you guys are brave you can by-pass wiring in the ignitor and get youself a MSD DISII HO. They do work, we just have really shitty luck with them in the past.

The production unit will be a true "plug n play". Only thing you need to wire in is the positive and negative, which goes directly to the battery. There's also an option to wire the "CDI" to your clutch pedal switch; with the built in 2 stage rev-limiter.

Actually there will be two colors option. Blue if you buy it elsewhere once it's available. And in limited numbers for RRE only; black.

I'll think about it if you're worthy to be the other beta tester! Beside you want -AN fitting on your t!@#$% setup. Patience grasshopper! And jesus freaking christ dude! 15,689 post count?

is the true plug and play ignition being tested atm?

btw, what is better about the montero coils? will they withstand the heat that mike w was talking about better?
