Just use a bike pump, it works. That or rent one from home depot or auto zone. Ive got one but live too far plus its really big and isnt exactly portable.

The bike pump doesn't work if it is a big leak. I've tried that before. Costco sells compressors sometimes. You can always return it after you use it. I think last I saw it was $150. I would say keep it but I don't know if it can power air tools.

This might work for you.
http://www.silcapompe.it/superpista_en.htm

SILCA SUPER PISTA

It takes about 25 strokes with the Super Pista to reach 100 psi on a 23c road tire: fast, but not the fastest pump. The base could be bigger, and the gauge is at the bottom of the pump, instead of the top where it'd be easier to read. But the wood handle is smooth and warm to the touch, and the stroke is erotically smooth. The Super Pista's durability is legendary: My father has been using his for 15 years. Silcas are easily rebuildable, and parts are easy to come by.

PRICE: $74
FEATURES: 81/2-in. wooden handle, reversible brass air chuck, 36-in. hose, 28-in. steel barrel and shaft

I got my air compressor from Costco for about $80.

Or if you're real cheap, how about those car cigarette lighter operated air pumps.

True, but on a relatively new car like the evo, the bike pump should work fine. I would imagine this was more a preventative maintenance check than because his car is behaving badly.

You need a compressor which preferrably has a tank to hold air and its not constantly running. This way, you can hear the air leaks. WHereas if the compressor is running all the time, you can't hear any leaks, except the noise of the compressor
