alright guys :mitsu:, i wanna know what everyones shifting at with an almost stock evo 8. i know boost prsure declines at "so many" RPM but i never knew where the point really is. After a while i just got a feel for it and found a nice point to shift but, maybe im wrong??? just a ::humph::

Shifting point under what circumstances (normal driving, drag racing, etc....)

I would say 7K from 1st-2nd & 2nd-3rd, and maybe a little earlier from 3rd- 4th; like 6900. IMO its better shifting a little earlier from 3rd-4th on a stock EVO cuz by the time ur gonna hit redline, ur pretty much running out of top end, in which its better to just get in another gear.

Maybe someone can post a stock Dyno. That will usually dictate the best points to shift. You want to hit when the boost tapers off, but still put it into an area of boost. Boost hits at about 3500rpms and starts tapering at about 5800rpms. I don't think going to 7k is the best, but not 5800 either. Probably a point in between if I can guess right. I would want to test it out though to find for sure what exat RPM.

Put 50 stock EVOs on a racetrack and you'll get 50 different results. *Generally* you'll be ok 6000-6500 or so on a stock EVO 8. Put it on a dyno and find out, or drive it a ton feel it out.

ive watched best motoring videos... and when road racing.. it seems as if they redline. i guess they do that so they can have a much bigger powerband. but when I drag race... i shift at 6500. anything higher than that.. it feels as if my car really slows down. dont know.. just a thought.

The dude that started the topic still failed to specify what kind of racing he was doing. Drag or Road Race??? I assume he's talking about drag, since he mentioned a launch. I know that shifting at 7K has pretty muched worked for me and all my buddies when it comes to fast times on the 1/4 srag strip. Although I don't know too much about road racing, I would assume that when road racing one try to keep there RPM's high right (4500-6500)?

Not in a bone stock EVO 8 you shouldn't...

Doesn't matter much. Stock car with stock powerband. Drag, road course, a-x, whatever...if you run out of steam you should shift.

True, but al least when drag racing, u still don't struggle on the top end until ur in 3rd gear, which is why I suggested to shift a littler earlier to get into 4th. Maybe around 6500.

how about you just learn to drive it. anyone can read a paper and tell their buddy's when to shift, but all-in-all, it just takes real driving..

plus if you learn to drive it by driving it, you will:

1.) have it down better
2.) be more comfortable doing it
3.) can concentrate on not crashing rather than shifiting at a certain RPM

thats just imo though

Generally the best advice right there to be honest. You forgot to add:

4.) you'll have a lot of fun driving an EVO while figuring it out

hehehe

As far as the 9's vs. the 8's it's a difficult comparison. 9's simply don't fall on their faces the way 8's do. They pull pretty much all the way through indicated red on the cluster. At least the car doesn't NOTICEABLY drop off the way the 8 does. If you really want to be exact, put it on a dyno and check the graph.

Based on my stock VIII dynoplot 6500 rpms looks about right to me.

Wow I always shifted at around 7600 but its probablly just making noise up there. But the way I figure I rather stay in a lower gear to keep the torque multiplication factor higher.

if u look at a dyno graph u'll see how much power ur car's making at 7600rpm....looking at where the powerband is according to the dyno will determine ur shift points.

That's where driving style and your personal comfort zone come into play in relation to your application. On twisty roads/road course track of course hehehe.

I tried this on my car and it was best to go to 7800 on it compared to 7000.(it's not stock)
you want to shift at redline on a stock or moded evo that way your at a good rpm for the next gear for drag racing. I agree if it is an 8 3rd to 4th 6800-6900

i tested this at the drag strip in my car for like 6 runs i changed my shift points with consistant launches. i tried 8k, 7800, 7600, 7300, 7k, 6800 my mods are in my sig. i got best trap speed when shifting at 7300.. scott also said when he was tuning my car that my best point to shift was about 7300 on stock cams and turbo. hope he will chime in on this subject because IMO scott is the master. also my 1/4 times increased considerably from 12.7 to 12.4
