with this mod , it will be easier to launch the evo with consistent 60 foot times of less than 2 seconds at the 1/4 mile.

use this mod at your own risk!
the rev limiter acts as a safety device so that evo drivers dont do any unnecessary damage by launching the car too hard.

before mod:
the limiter on a 2005 evo kicks in at 5000 rpms when the car is in gear, clutch depressed, and has no forward momentum

what you need, or what i used
1. phillips screw driver
2. small pair of needle nose pliers
3. 10mm wrench or socket

Step 1:
Disconnect the battery (just the negative side)

Step 2:
Remove this piece that is located below the steering wheel. Behind it is the fuse panel. This hole is what i used 2 look through
http://www.hostdub.com/albums/burningmoney97/100_4448.sized.jpg

I also opened the lower dash (using the phillips screwdriver on the 2 screws), so i could make it easier for me to fit my left hand with the pliers toward the plug that needs to be disconnected.

Step 3: Â*
Locate plug

http://www.hostdub.com/albums/burningmoney97/100_4444a.sized.jpg

Step 4:
Disconnect plug
using the phillips screw driver, push up on the white tap that holds the plug in place
http://www.hostdub.com/albums/burningmoney97/100_4457s121.sized.jpg

while pushing up , pull the plug out using the pliers
http://www.hostdub.com/albums/burningmoney97/100_4462b1.sized.jpg

Step 5:
just let the plug dangle.
http://www.hostdub.com/albums/burningmoney97/100_4466.sized.jpg

then close up lower dash and reconnect batteryÂ*

no more rev limiter video - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTEwNzc4OTZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx

however, this mod does have a strange aftereffect..........
{when shifting at high rpms, the rpms will drop much slower than before}
example:Â* Â*Both of these videos are while accelerating in 2nd gear and then i fully depress the clutch. The second video doesnt look like it, but the clutch was fully depressed for the entire time.
Â* Â* Â* Video: before mod - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTEwNzc4NzZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx
Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* after mod - http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTEwNzc4ODZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx

so after you do this mod, your evo will act a little different. this is a normal occurrence for evos with this mod. just be advised that it will happen and dont freak out when it does

now this slow rpm drop can be either a good or bad thing. depending on how you look at it.
Good -makes rev matching easier
Bad -when coasting in gear it will feel like you still have your foot on the gas.
Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* -making it more difficult to slow down before a turn. especially on a road courseÂ*

Finally, this mod can be easily reversed by simply disconnecting the battery and reinstalling the plug

Personally, if Mitsu put the rev limiter on there, I would think that they knew what they were doing. The question is, can the parts take the occasional stress of a 6500K+ launch? Probably, but don't do it too often.

actually i like the the rev limiter cause i can leave it floored at the the line and it leaves me at the perfect rpm to launch the evo in my opinion. leave it on O0

Why would anyone buy an Evo to launch and do drag racing :idiot2: Mitsu put that there to save them the headaches of you launch happy people crying at HB about how your clutch is making weird noises or your transfer case exploded at 12K miles....If you are dead set on launching your Evo....don't abuse the warranty and ruin it for everyone else who has "REAL" problems when something goes wrong with their Evo. I had a bad switch in my sunroof....I had to argue with the service guy at HB about getting it fixed....his quote to me...."There are too many So Cal Evo people comming here to get warranty work for things they did to mess up their own cars!" WTF does that have to do with a bad connector in a sunroof? Nothing but it is things like this that mess it up for everyone else who have a real problem...just my opinion

DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK, IF SOMETIHNG FUCK UP DON'T COME UP HERE AND WHINE LIKE A BITCH @ ME O0

As stated in the owners manual, the '05 EVO has a 5k rev limiter that is enabled whenever the clutch is depressed more than an inch; basically, a built-in 2-step rev-limiter. It's quite likely that the ECU also pulls a bunch of timing when this rev-limiter is engaged--would be interesting to log.

That being said, the 5k limiter is easy to disable. The '05 clutch pedal has three switches associated with it, that's one more than the '03-04:
-- top one is the cruise control switch (yes, I know we don't have cruise, but it's what that switch does on the DSM--cancels cruise when the clutch is depressed more than one inch)
-- bottom switch is the starter interlock, won't start unless this is depressed.
-- 5k switch is at the top, behind the fuse relay panel; very difficult to see, but it can be reached by following the top of the clutch pivot.

To disable any of these switches, you just unplug the connector. If you want to re-enable the switch you just plug the connector back into the switch.

Unlpug the connector to that 5k switch and the 5k rev limiter will go away allowing launches at any RPM. Of course I would not recommend this because the whole purpose of the 5k rev limiter is to limit potential damage to the clutch, drivetrain, etc.

Awesome info! Thank you C-Spec. O0

Maybe one of these days when I get the guts to try out a 6k launch, I'll do this. ;)

Everytime you launch your Evo.....your drivetrain dies just a little bit.... :'(
