I just got back from TT and I am very happy! I made 357HP and 338TQ on 91 octane. The tune was great. It is so smooth now. My mods are: TBE, Cat delete pipe, Megan Racing O2 Housing, Injen Intake, Injen UICP, Dejon Boost Controller, Walbro 255 FP, ARP HS and Cos Worth cams tuned with Ecu Flash @ 23PSI.Â* I am happy with their work and customer service! Great work! In about 3 weeks I will be getting an exedy twin plate clutch installed from them. Thanks TT crew for all your help and great service!Â* O0

The idle is almost stock with a little loppy. I love it. Sounds like a beast. lol.
The low end torque is great. It all comes on by about 3500rpm and doesn't drop much until about 5300rpm.

good question, id like to know as well...

Countless Evos for four years around the country have made 370whp + on the stock injectors without problem. It is very easy to see when a car is out of injector when it is on the dyno.

As we all know, our Evos come with 560cc injectors. I've seen an '03 Evo with a 3076 turbo kit run around on Denso 660cc injectors making (dynojet) 480+ whp and 430+ wtq as his daily driver and it lasted til he wrecked it a year later. David Buschur, someone I don't normally team up with, has reported similar results several times on his forums and on Evom.

I made 585whp/527wtq on 880s, yet I've seen people falsely (IMHO) say they were near 100% duty cycle with 1000cc injectors while making 120whp/150wtq less than me. (I'm sure they believed they were maxed out 'cuz their ems said so, or maybe they just had really innefficient injectors drivers or some such problem).

A lot of the hype around getting bigger injectors is for vendors to make money off of you. This vendor push was furthered by the love of the SAFC by many SoCalEvo folks. I've seen it work so I'm not bashing it. The bigger injectors were an easy way to get around boost cut while fooling the un-tuned ECU into providing more ignition advance. With the advent of the affordable ECUFlash, bigger injectors are no longer necessary for any of these reasons.

Congrats on the numbers :D

Please post the chart with everything set the same as you normally do ie: smoothing on over 70 dyno graphes from all the the other graphs set to the standard 3 instead of 4 like this one. Apples to apples is best O0

Smogrunner
03-04-2007, 09:14 PM
Going from a smoothing factor of 4 to 3 will make only a slight difference in smoothness. It will still look smooth for a 91 octane tune. I'm the one that posts up all the graphs in the database. When I do post it there, it will be using a smoothness factor of 3 like all the rest. Right now, it is kinda like comparing Gala Apples to Fuji Apples lol.

I don't get it. How would this power curve look different if he was running 680cc injectors or OEM ones. What does this power curve have to do with injectors? To me, it looks like a dozen other Evo9 tunes on 91 with the exception of making about 20 more horsepower and torque.

a bit off topic and im sure Alfred@TT can give more info on this product (AMS VSR intake manifold)
http://www.amsperformance.com/store/images/intakemanifold.jpg
what are the benefits on a stock turbo, stock head...
does this retain all smog equipment ? or can this be done with the stock ECU (i remember some peeps recommending Intake Mani's on standalones due to the sensor issues)
are they any modification needed in order to fit properly? (bending dip stick ? etc..)

MR. Birdie
03-05-2007, 10:24 AM
LOL goku its top secret. They did a test and it made 10whp over the stock manifold on a stock turbo set up which is done on the evo 8 turbo. The only thing is that the EGR will trigger the check engine light since the EGR on the VSR is disable. There is way to get around it which SMOGGY might have the answer for it. I'll figure it out but this manifold is good stuff with a higher flow turbo.

post up some info mofo!!!! (specially on the EGR) loll freaking thing always triggers a light if the hose pops loose..
but its a good alternative if this thing makes near 10-15whp

Well I dont have a real good before and after because I did other stuff before the last tune besides just the cams. But I had 304hp & 282tq with TBE,tune with 21psi peak. This was done at gt motorsports(which I dont recommend that place anymore). Then I added 02 housing, injen intake, injen UICP, 255 FP, Cos worth cams and had alfred tune it. Which made the 357hp. So its hard to say how much I got from the cams, but Unless I made more than 23awhp from the other stuff I added, the cams made about 25-30awhp seeing the results before and after. You also have to factor in that alfred is a much better tuner than where I had it tuned with 304hp. Both dyno results were on a dynojet.

It already making 10-15whp on a stock evo 8 turbo. With a higher flowing turbo it should be around 20whp and mate it with a port 65mm TB. It should be 25-30whp gain. Without no loss in low end what so ever, and with a 2.3 stroker down the road. It would benefit more with the extra flow!

I should get my AMS VSR In next month due to some material that was back order. Yeah the 9's don't add that much of a gain like the 8's did. But remember the restricting factor here is the 91 octane in california. All the evo 8 with aggressive cams you seen are majority on a higher octane gas. I think 350whp on a 9 with cams and all the bolts on is about right.

That I'm not sure yet but I remember talking to smoggy and he told me he might have a remedy to go around the EGR system. If not i'll just run the check engine light because the EGR system doesn't cause any driveability issue. My evo is going to turn into a weekend car. Once that happend i'm going all out on this baby.

Before everyone thinks I might have a "fix" to the CEL problem, I don't. I'm recommending the CREADER that just deletes the code as it is made. It is a tiny little plug in device that deletes codes as they pop up. The only benefit is your CEL light is off, which is important to me.

max gain is one thing, the power under the curve is what pushes you back in the seat. You can gain 10-15hp max but you can also have a 20-25 gain from mid to that top end point. But it depends on the car and the tune.

The turbo was completed today and I believe the cams and wideband go in tomorrow so I have tonight to decide if I am going with the valvetrain too. That's a damn lot of money for something that I may not need and adds no power. I know the benefits, but shit, it still hurts.

youre able to rev higher due to the new turbo, take advantage of it and add the additional valvetrain. being able to rev top 8500 with the new turbo kit is great.. having the right supporting mods like valvetrain helps

You dont want to zing that engine up there and float a valve or throw a shim.

What about the bottom end with all the 8K+ happiness? Compared to most 4cyls I've owned and played with the 4G doesnt sound or feel like it wants to live life 8,000 rpm at a time =) If I could rev to 9K I would do it and use it, as it is now I love to exercise my 9 on the top end, all high speed road for me.

well with a 3076r making power over 8k shouldnt be a problem, since you do have a larger turbo to make top end power (unlike stock)
bottom end starts to worry around 8.5k rpms and beyond that.. if you want to rev past that, getting forge rods, pistons and etc should be consider

loll youre too funny at times... ring is a matter of time but thats an entire different issue that doesnt belong in this thread or socal for that matter..
are you purchasing cossi valvetrain as well or something else???
cossie valvetrain isnt cheap, damn thing is in the 600.00 figure
thats the only thing stopping me at the moment, since i want both (not just cams )

True, but installed the price is less ;-). What sucks is that one is for performance and the other is really just for safety...Paying for more horsepower is one thing, paying so your engine doesn't blow is quite another :(

I will provide an update next week as to how the car runs with the cams. It won't be a cams only judgement since lots of other mods going in at same time, but I can speak to basic idle quality. I am also picking up the car tonight with just the turbo, so I will be able to say what my butt dyno tell sme the difference is with only the cams added to the setup.

loll screw the butt dyno, get that bitch tune and do a before and after comparison with the cams (and a big turbo kit)

Yeah ok, Ill spend my money doing two tunes so you can know what the difference is between a gt3076 with Cossie Cams on a IX and without. You make a compelling argument, but I think I'll pass :-)

Good point Miss Evo8. I hope to make the track this Wednesday just to hang with the group there and maybe some seat time with someone. Hopefully I wil get to the track with the new setup sometime in the next month or two on my own. Until then I guess it's all about cock rings though ;-)

the car will behave completly different ... get use to the power band.... love the top end the new set up provides... but that was on an viii, i can only imagine on the IX with mivec and cams

What's keeping me from tracking my Evo now is that I just picked up the car tonight from RRE with the turbo upgrade sans retune and it goes back on Monday for the cams, valvetrain, COP, and other goodies. When all that is done and it as been retuned, then I need to have John finish adjusting my suspension from the accident I was in. Rght now I have negative camber of 1.7 on one side and 0.5 on the other. When all of that is done and I get the thing back to the Auto Body shop to fix all the paint mistakes they made...Then I will go track the beast.

Whew, I almost ran out of breath...

BTW, My first impressions of the RRE Turbo kit are great!!! With this and the Nisei IC I am holding boost all the way to redline with no taper at all. I can't wait for the rest :-)
