Today I tuned my secretary's EVO.Â* This is one of the most powerful EVO's Ive had the privelege of tuning. This was done on straight 91 octane.

Built 2.4
GT35R
JUN 272's
Springs and retainers
Intake manifold
Throttle body
FPR
AEM EMS

We decided to only tune for 91 pump gas......race gas coming soon!

I think that is, by far, the highest pure 91 octane power I've seen on an Evo. This isn't a stunt - it was PURE 91. No "splash" of race fuel. Any doubters out there? BTW, I think this car may have 8.5:1 compression pistons, so people thinking that 25psi is unrealistic need to consider that.

Congrats on the tune? Is the secretary single ^-^ But seriously, that's alot of power. JP from AEM tuned one of my buddies car about 3 O0years ago on 91 octane and pushed 27.6 psi's. End result was 454 whp. Hat's of to you guys for the monster you tuned.

Thats amazing. but we shouldn't think that we could achieve this..
Its a freaken 2.4L motor at 25PSI!! it should be getting big numbers!!
Is this even straight 91? or is meth added..?

Now if this was a 2.0L gt35R at 20PSI like normal people run.. I would be first in line. Wanting to know every mod.. lol..

From what I've learned there is a big difference from 20PSI to 25 PSI in a GT35r

Great looking car Jen, looks just like mine, but a little faster. I think the paint on your front bumper is starting to peel back from the G forces. That's the only way you can tell. We talked on the phone yesterday, I'm the guy from Texas.

I'm sure all of you already know how great Alfred is, but what would you go through to get a tune from him? How about driving 13 hours and sleeping in your car in front of his shop? I'm sure all of you answered yes, but I got the chance to actually do it about a year ago. I had just bought the EVO and didn't know how to get the seats to lean back, so it was a tid bit uncomfy, but well worth it. Every time I call TT I'm impressed with his "secretary's" kindness, helpfullness, professionalness, and willingness-to-date-strangers-ness. ;) I think she's the only thing keeping the shop together, and fully deserves a car that will put down some near 700hp numbers on C16. Keep up the good work guys.

It is mainly because it has a larger hotside on the 35R. Instead of the .63 (mine) this turbo has the .82 or 1.0 AR. On a 2.0 it would be super laggy, but on this car with the 2.4 it has a great power curve. Other than that, it has few, if any, other restrictions: ems with no maf, jun cams, intercooler, ported head, proper exhaust, and the right tuner.

A little research and you could figure it out. AEM ~1400, Intercooler ~600, Cams ~400, Ported head ~400, 2.4 ~3k, turbo kit ~3k. Then there's stuff like injectors that're about 800. Valves and valvesprings ~700. And then labor, assuming you don't do it yourself. That should give you a rough estimate.

I wish it were that cheap to build an evo! Those are some very conservative/used prices. Except for the injectors, where I think you may have gone a tad overboard. Unless you're planning on running 4 secondaries, you can get a set of RC 1000's for a little over $350.

Hey Al, which fuel setup are you using on this car? A Walbro pump, or something a "bit" more powerful like an a-1000?

I got the injector and stroker price off of SBR. The head port and build prices were from my own experience. AEM I saw one going for 1200 the other day, with all the sensors. Cams and I/C prices were pulled straight outta ma ass. It's not wishful thinking to believe you could get these parts for the price listed. It is that cheap. You just have to shop around.

For injectors, are you looking at the Power Enterprise TL1000? I don't even know anyone who has those on their evo. For a head build what did you factor in? Porting and polishing will be somewhere around $500+. Head gasket is around $100. Springs and retainers will be around $300. Middle grade valves should be around $250. Cam gears will be $250-$350ish. JUN 272 cams are around $650-$700ish. Head studs are $100.

A new EMS is around $1600 (without the UEGO). If you want a wideband, you'll need to spend another $300 or so. If you get the 30-1313 box (the one with the built in UEGO), then expect to pay around $2200.

As far as the rest of the motor goes, let's say you buy the Brian Crower motor for 3K, are you planing on replacing the water pump, timing belt, oil jets and check valves, or even the clutch and flywheel?

What about piping, the fuel pump, a fuel pressure regulator, new intake pipe if you're planing on ditching the MAF, ignition, tuning, dyno time, trouble shooting and whatever else you run into along the way?

icantdrive75
06-02-2007, 01:02 PM
Agreed I didn't factor in the small details along the way. I was just trying to give the guy a ballpark.

But my port/polish/3angle 1mm oversized valve job/install was $400. Custom port with a flow bench. I spent $700 on valves, titanium retainers and dual valvesprings. I didn't think about cam gears cause I already had some. But they're really not that necessary, just a convenient option. With the bigger cams you don't really need to retard them as much, mine are actually advanced right now.

You can find EMS's for cheaper than that. But your prices new are accurate. If you notice my last post, I didn't say you could build it that cheap, just that you could find these parts that cheap. He asked the estimated cost of the mods.

But anywho. It's not a big deal. Thanks for doing all the research on prices I was too lazy to do.

icantdrive75,
where did you built your head? I planned to have mine built so I can boost higher to 37-38psi and 9k rpm safer to make up for my driving skill. I was looking at Buschur stage head. Thanks.

I just had it done at a local machine shop that builds race motors. I haven't noticed much of a difference with my port and valve work. Just FYI. but you can get all the hardware installed and a valve job pretty cheaply at any machine shop, and they will do almost as good as buschur, AMS, or anyone else.

Why does the torque taper down so fast? That car is insane. I hope I can get a ride in it next time I'm out there.Â* Â* ;)
