View Full Version : Looney Tuning is a Vendor

Looney Tuning

1. What is Looney Tuning?

Looney Tuning is a name that a friend came up with for my tuning method.

2. What is involved in Looney Tuning?

I use the latest technological methods available at my disposal to log data from your car. That includes an Innovate LM-1 wideband to log the air fuel ratio, a [b]Mitsubishi Evo JDM MAP sensor or the stock Evo X map sensor to log boost, Evoscan to log a host of important data from the ECU that are essential to properly tune your car and Ecuflash to flash your ECU.
I do not use the narrowband O2 sensor on your car to tune it.
I do not set the boost on your car without logging the psi with a bench tested sensor. I will NOT use a boost gauge to set the boost. Boost gauges can vary by 1-2 psi from the actual logged boost.
It generally takes me 3-4 hours to tune your car.

Here is what is involved:

• You show up at my place between 9:30 and 10 AM. I will install all of the logging equipment on your car. That usually takes us about half an hour.
• If you want a baseline log so we can compare the before and after power gains, then we will head out to the Looney Tuning test site  and do some baseline. After that, I will flash the car with a baseline map.
• You will do the driving and I will do the logging. We will do multiple WOT 3rd or 4th gear pulls (Evo 8/9 in 3rd gear and Evo 10 in 4th gear). After every pull, we pull over into a parking lot and I inspect the data.
• The first change will be to the boost. I will adjust the boost after every WOT pull either from the ECU or with the MBC. It usually takes 4-5 pulls to adjust the boost. Boost setting will vary from one Evo to the other depending on the modifications. But as a general rule, the Evo 8 runs less boost at peak than the Evo 9, and the Evo 9 runs less boost at peak than the Evo 10. All of that is on 91 octane pump gas.
• The second change will be to the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR). It usually takes us 2-3 logs to set the AFR. I set the AFR to 11.5:1 (11.5 parts of air to one part of fuel) at peak and then taper it to 11-10.8:1 by redline.
• The final change is to the timing map in the ROM. I follow the rule of MTBT, minimum timing for best torque. Basically, I will advance the timing, i.e., how far in advance of Top Dead Center (TDC) to fire the spark plug, until there is light knock. Then, I retard the timing to eliminate the knock and leave the timing there.
• We are done!!! And your car is Looney Tuned. We head on to my place, I remove my logging equipment, you pay me, and then drive home with a big smile on your face, unless you get a ticket for speeding :-(

That is the methodology that I use to tune. There is more detail about the methodology here http://www.socalevo.net/forum/index.php?topic=49169.0
I do not street tune in 1/2 an hout. I take my time and I am meticulous at what I do. This is primarily a passion and a hobby of mine. Making money is only a secondary concern. I have my own full time job, so the money is not essential.

If you want a short duration tune, then please seek another tuner.

It generally takes me 3-4 hours to finalize a tune. If injector scaling is involved or if you want baseline logs for before and after power graphs, then it takes a bit longer. If I have to remove an MBC and install ECU boost control, then it will take a bit longer. So make sure that you budget a whole day for the tune.

3. Do you use an MBC, EBC, or ECU boost control?

I have tuned cars with MBCs, EBCs and ECU boost control. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Most of the Evos that I have tuned used the ECU boost cnotrol method. The ECU boost control method has the following advantages:

It allows the user to hold more boost to redline without having to spike the boost at the peak spool of 3500-3750 rpm. For example, you can set the boost at 20 psi and keep it at 20 psi by redline.Â*
It allows the end user 16 rpm levels to adjust boost. This gives you flexibility in adjusting boost. With an MBC, you just turn the knob and adjust the boost for ALL the rpm range.
It allows the tuner to have the same boost in 3rd and 4th gear. Read about it here. http://www.socalevo.net/forum/index.php?topic=51293.0
The biggest advantage of this method is that it is totally STEALTH. You can pop your hood to a cop and they will not know that you have upped the boost on your car. In California this is definitely a plus.

4. Do you do mechanical work?

No I do not. If you opt for ECU boost control, then I will give you the restrictor pill that MUST be installed in the boost line for proper boost control. I will tell you how to install it, but it is up to you to install it properly. If you want me to install the hose/pill assembly, then I will do it for a small $20 fee.
If you opt for the ECU boost control using the GM 3-port method, then you will have to install that properly as well. Be aware that installing the GM 3-port involves splicing into the stock solenoid harness.

5. Do you tune cars on a dyno?

Given the time intensive method of tuning that I use, it is very costly for the customer to dyno tune. However, if the customer is willing to pay for the dyno tuning fees, then I am more than willing to tune their car on the dyno.

6. What maintenance should I do to my Evo prior to tuning?

Check these two links and follow their advice:

http://www.norcalevo.net/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=2&topic=19341.0
http://www.fftec.com/articles.php?article_id=164

Pay close attention to exhaust leaks, boost leaks, and the type of gas that you use:

Please make sure that your car does not have any exhaust leaks in the exhaust stream. Exhaust leaks will corrupt the air fuel ratio data needed to properly tune the fuel map on your car. Exhaust leaks tend to be located at the falanges/gaskets or at the welds (pinhole leaks). To check for leaks, jack up your car and put it on jack stands. Start the car and get under it. Run your bare hand around the falanges and gaskets and you will quickly notice if there is a leak. You can feel the exhaust gases on your hand from the leaking area. Just make sure not to burn yourself. Do it when the car is cold in the morning.
Please make sure that your car does not have any boost leaks. Boost leaks will prevent the tuner from hitting the boost targets. It will also overwork your turbo. The most common boost leaks on the Evo come from the IC piping/hoses. Make sure that the clamps around the hoses/piping are as tight as possible. You might also want to think about replacing the stock clamps with sturdier t-bolt clamps. Other areas to check for boost leaks include the throttle body shaft seals and injector O-rings.
Please use 91 octane gas from 76 gas stations. The Evo seems to like this gas the best. It is rumored that the 91 octane gas from 76 has slightly higher octane content thant other 91 octane gases. When choosing a gas station to fill from go to the one that has the most customers. This way the gas does not sit in the station's tank and is constantly replenished.

7. What is your refund policy?

I will refund you ALL your money if I am unable to tune your car. In fact, you only pay me after the tune and not before.

8. Can I see examples of cars you have tuned?

Yes. Here are some links to threads about cars that I have tuned:

10. Will tuning my Evo void my warranty?

YES. If you are concerned about voiding your warranty by tuning the ECU, then you are better off leaving the ECU untouched. If you are concerned about damage to your car as a result ofÂ* tuning, then you are better off leaving the car unmodded and the ECU untouched. The Evo is a thoroughly entertaining car when it is stock. So leave it that way and enjoy it.

11. What is your pricing and availability?

Check my signature for pricing packages.

I only tune on the weekends. During the week, I work like everyone else. During the SCCA racing season, I am sometimes unavailable for tuning during the weekends. On occasions, I will run a weekday tuning special for a limited amount of time. Check the vendor announcements and my signature for details.

The best way to reach me is to fill out and submit the following information form:

http://www.looneytuning.net/info.html

It has all the information that I need from you and it is submitted directly to my e-mail.

Please be patient since this is a one person operation.Â*

Thank You

Well, it's about time Nj :)
Ladies and Gents I'm the very first of many to get a tune from Dr. Nj (by the way, he's a real doctor).
I've known Nj close to 10 years now and I can tell you that he's one intelligent and honest person i've ever met.
This honesty and intelligence are carried over on how he does his tuning. He will tell you straight up and not sugar coat things.
He might be a little conservative to some when it comes to tuning but I think it's one of his strenghts.
He will do everything he can to get the most HP out of your car safely and he WILL NOT back down on any challenges that may arise during the course of his tuning. I guarantee you that.

Ya. I think I found my local tuner.
Would you be able to tune up in Lancaster, since there is a elevation difference between SFV and AV, or does it even matter.

You have two #10's FYI...

If you flash the ECU back to stock, it does not void the warranty, does it?

And maybe I missed this...but where are you located?

I would be able to tune in Lancaster, but Long Beach is where I prefer to tune since I have a well defined tuning route/method. The pill method is not impacted by elevation and I have been able to come up with a way to lessen the impact of temperature changes on boost. You should be OK if I tune your car in LB.

If the dealer looks hard enough in your ECU, then they will be able to find out that it has been flashed back to stock. But most dealers do not do that and they simply use the OBD2 port for diagnostic reasons.

I am located in Long Beach. Send an e-mail to [email protected] In the e-mail tell me about you and about the mods to your Evo, etc....

Oh yeah! Looney Tunning is in BUSINESS!!!

All i have to say is Naji is an EXCELLENT TUNER! He is very knowledgable and knows what he is doing. He take his time to get everything right and will explain each process of what he's doing w/ the car. Â*I've lost count on how many times I've driven to Long Beach to get tuned and re-tuned for parts I've changed up on my Evo. Most of the time I'm there around 10am, we have lunch around 12-1pm and I dont leave till 6 or 7pm. One time, which I will never forget. We stayed up till 2am to get my car ready for the track the following day.

I must say I've learned a lot about tuning from Naji. I started from SAFCII=>ECU+=>ECUFLASH/EVOSCAN. Him and Gus (FastForward) convinced me to get rid of my AEM Intake and go back to the stock box w/ K&N Drop-In. Also convinced me to get rid of my ECU+ and go w/ the ECUFLASH since I already had a laptop and tatrix cable.

To summarize all of this up, not only is my car tuned well. I managed to make some good friends during the process! Looney Tooned FTW!Â* O0 O0

I will continue to provide my help to anyone. Nothing has changed. I will still post the results of parts that I have tested. I will continue to update The Amateur Tuner thread.

I will tutor you. No problem.

I am using Windows XP and have had no problems with any of the patches. Vista sucks. That could be the problem that you are having.

Finally!Â* Just like Lawrence said! I have nothing but respect for this man and his methods, even though there are some skeptics out there. Oh and by the way, my motor hasnt "blown up" yet (inside joke).Â* I think all of us that have been tuned or even just logged by Naji have grown into very good friends. We sometimes just go to his house to borrow his tools to remove and/or install parts and even take off window tint on one occasion. He has opened his garage and home to all of us, no questions asked. We all have grown to be part of the Looney Tuned family. We all come from different aspects of life, some of us are JDM ( Lawerence, John...) some of us are MDM ( myself, lil danny....) some of us are LDM (Naji) some of us are GDM ( Demetri) but we all get along like a bunch of friends.

P.S. MDM= Mexican Domestic Market, LDM= Lebanese Domestic Market, GDM= Greek Domestic Market!Â* lol

nj, congrats on your tuning business. I'm really considering going back to the ECU for boost control after reading some of your posts. You mentioned earlier about the elevation not being a factor from Lancaster to Long Beach when using the pill. I always had issues maintaining boost levels when I had my Xede controlling boost when I raced up in LACR in Palmdale. My boost would vary quite a bit from Palmdale to near sea level where I live. Do you feel that the pill that you recommend using would really help me maintain consistant boost regardless of elevation? Thanks.

Joe,

The boost level is based off target load cells, and while not as reliable as target boost (which still has kinks to be worked out) it should be an improvement. I'll let NJ give a better answer :)

According to mrfred (evom boost control guru), the load based boost control that we use is impacted by weather changes than by elevation. But with fine tuning, the impact of weather on boost can be lessened dramatically. I have not independently verified his findings, but if your boost is being dramatically impacted it is worth it to try ECU boost control and see if it helps.

We will be going to Irwindale with an ECU boost control car pretty soon. Irwindale is only 500 feet above sea level, but it will shed some light on this subject. I will report my findings after I log the car.

nj, congrats on your tuning business. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply nj. I'm looking forward to your findings. The ECU boost control is looking better everyday.

nj, i had a question about the ecu boost controller...Â* does it mean that it is not necessary to have a boost gauge?Â* my car is currently stock, but i dont really want to install a boost gauge since it wouldnt be stealth no more.Â* what is your take on this?

jeric
12-08-2007, 07:39 PM
you don't need a boost gauge, but you will need a boost sensor to log boost...nj would prolly recommend you purchase a jdm boost gauge from mitsubishi since the usdm isn't accurate at logging high boost. but, it also depends on why you want the boost gauge. the benefit of having a gauge is that you don't need to drag your laptop around everywhere you go just to see what your boosting. your main concern would be safety and you wanna make sure your'e not over-boosting/ causing knock. there's plenty of safe gaurds naji uses to avoid this so a gauge wouldn't be too useful...

PLEASE READ THIS

I have been seeing a lot of cars with exhaust leaks lately. Most of the leaks are pinhole type leaks where the falange is welded to the body of the HFC or test pipe. There are also exhaust leaks coming from the gaskets where two falanges mate.

Make sure that your car DOES NOT have an exhaust leak before you come over for a tuning session. If you show up with a leaky exhaust, then that will take away from tuning time since we cannot take accurate AFR data with a leaky exhaust. We will have to take your car to a muffler shop and have the leak fixed. The shop will charge you at least $25.

To avoid the cost and delay, make sure you do not have a leak. If there is a leak, take the car to whoever installed the exhaust and have them fix it for free.

There are many tuners that have tuned longer than I have. You are welcome to go with them. I have owned two Evos and tuned both of them since 2006. My own personal Evo is my test bed. It has over 50 flashes on it and over 200 WOT logs. I am the only public tuner is SoCal that does ECU boost control.

Before that I wrenched on a Nissan SE-R which became my race car. I also modified an SE-R SpecV and wrtoe about it for the now defunct Nissan Performance Magazine.

Everything that you need to know is in the first post of this thread. My method takes time since it is data intensive. It currently takes me 5-6 hours to tune an Evo provided the customer does not want a baseline log.

If you want a quick tune or a tuner with more history, then I am afraid that you are going to have to look elsewhere.

As of today, the pricing for a tune is as follows:

$200 for a road tune
$100 for a road re-tune

If you have a CONFIRMED date for a tune, then your cost is still $150 for a tune and $75 for a re-tune. This is ONLY for new customers that sign up.

I think this is a very fair price considering the 6+ hours that I spend tuning your car.

Great guy, totally anal about fine tuning every aspect... completely open about exactly what he does and why.. no secret recipe or smoke and mirrors... he takes the time to make it right.. (mine took 7 hrs) and has an obvious and genuine passion for what he does. It's really a no-brainer..

Hi guys,

I decided to increase the re-tune prices to $140. I have noticed that I am spending as much time re-tuning car as tuning it the first time. I think this is very fair and is close to what others charge to a road re-tune. You still get a $60 discount since you are a loyal customer.

Can you believe that it has been a year since I launched Looney Tuning!!! In that year I have tuned roughly 56 Evos, an average of an Evo per weekend. Not bad for a part time gig!!!

The first part of this year sucked since I had to juggle tuning, my college job, and nursing my bed ridden gf back on her feet after the devastating car accident she had.

Since May/June all has been great. The business is on auto pilot, my gf is up and running, and I won the SCCA ITA championship.

Thanks to all those who put their trust in me and supported me.

Hi Jeff,

Check in the Evo X power mods sub-forum and you will find write-ups about Evo Xs that I have tuned. You can get any TBE as long as it is a full 3 inch. Beyond that it is up to you on the noise level that you can tolerate.

If you want me to tune your car, then please fill and submit the form in my signature and I will get back to you with a tuning date.

I am really surprised that it is working on the car given that if you fart in the direction of an Evo X, then it triggers a CEL. The next revision, I am increasing throttle sensitivity by 2%. I will flash it at the meet on Tuesday. Let us see if the Evo X likes it or not.

If I can read the ECU, then I might be able to tune it. But I also need to see if I can log timing/load etc...If you make it to the meet, then I can try and see if I can connect to the ECU

It was never about the $. It was about finding out that 90% of the shops out there didn't know what they were doing, and that he was smart enough to figure it out, and be a great tuner. Oh and the fact that Naji loves tuning cars O0

Coming up on another LOONEY TUNING anniversary. Three years and still going strong. I have tuned 197 Evos/Subies so far. NOT ONE BLOWN ENGINE.

I still remember this thread and all the ruckus it caused. I was the first to introduce ECU boost to the SoCal Evo community. Some people who used MBCs on their stock turbos freaked out...LOL.

http://www.socalevo.net/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=37&topic=48123.0

Fast forward to today and almost every tuner worth his salt in SoCal uses ECUboost control. It is amazing how ECUboost spread like wild fire. SoCal Evo has indeed changed.

Here is for another successful year....boooyaaaa

Hello Dr. NJ, my name is Joseph Thomas. My wife had recently contacted you about tuning our evo9 gsr. She had mossimo install kelford 272 cams for my christmas present she was also trying to get the car tuned by you. Christmas is a busy time of year for everyone. I recently resent you a filled out form of all performance mods done to my car.
Our car is well taken care of we had 60k service done at 50k as well as oil changes done every 2500 to 3k miles and tranny and diff oil changes done every 5k. Im telling you this because I really want you to tune my car. I have heard great feedback on your quality of work and patients and expertise you put into each tune. My wife is an active duty marine and I work for a company on Camp Pendleton so we are very busy during the week, but i am free on the weekends. Im hoping you can do a dual map tune for 91 and E85. You can contact me via: 760 473 0378 and email: [email protected].

Thank You for your time and consideration.
Sincerely Joseph Thomas

I just got an awesome tune by Naji the tuning wizard. I would highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for a quality tune that delivers super smooth power through out all gears and rev ranges. I'm boosting with confidence and a smile.

Naji, are you still doing evo tuning nowadays? The link in the first post doesn't work anymore.

Please let me know.

[email protected] is my email address.

Thanks,

Thanks Apex. I'm mostly in need of someone with the ability to get all the latest ROM updates onto my car, and figured he was a good first option since he did street tunes. Is road race the only other option local to the west LA area nowadays? I've been out of the evo scene for some time when I parked mine a few years back.

I think RRE is a good option. Always had good experiences there.
KT Motoring in the valley is another option you can check into. I have some friends that have been very happy with them.

Actually you can contact RRE, you have many tuners there, even Scott still tuning at RRE as I knew. I heard also naji was tuning on dyno, but yes no street tuning since long back. There are other options like 5150 also in LA area
