I finally got a new laptop, and specifically asked for them NOT to install Symantec. I am looking for another good program that will help protect me from virus' and malware, BUT i specifically do not want it to suck down my CPU and RAM like all Symantec products always do.

thanks for the help guys O0

I use this and works great
http://www.avast.com/

it got very good reviews on download.com as well. Its free, but after a brief period, you have to "register" the software, but requires no $$.

my dad told me to get that program. It seems alright. He is a computer guru, but im never sure how 'up' he is on the newest stuff.

thanks for all teh help guys, keep them coming.

so far, it looks like NOD 32 is one of the best, ive already read a few sites ranking it as either #1 or #3...

I work for mitchell1/Snap-on Tools Senior Tech Support. Avast would be the one i recommend. it works and its free. better than symantec and mcafee, way less annoying.

^hehe... yea, snap-on = teh shit. the truck guy comes buy like once a week... hate seeing all those tools and not being able to afford a full set (of everything) :D...lol.

back on topic:
http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

i have gotten a few other friends that recommended AVG
one guy said, avira antivirus

any thoughts about the 'free' software?

nicklulu
02-20-2008, 03:21 PM
I would not use avg bec it's jus annoying. Avast free software has no strings attached. It works as well as the full version other than the bells a wistle that comes with it. Their thinking is everyone has the rights to be protected online. avira, i hadn't heard of.

if you want to make sure to get a free anti virus that you can trust, Most high speed isp offers free anti-virus as well. You should check your ISP.

urmotha
02-20-2008, 03:35 PM
Huh? How is AVG annoying? I have it set to update once a day, other than that I never even know it's there...

Not saying it's the be-all end-all of antivirus software, but I'd hardly consider it annoying. *shrug*

nicklulu
02-20-2008, 03:36 PM
^^^^ sorry if I offended you. avg is a good anti virus, but for me its just no the right fit i suppose.

no worries, i'm not offended, just wondering how you arrived at that conclusion :)

hey man, Â*this is louie (wingless black evo) from the parking garage. Â*try out AVG free. Â*i've been using that for a while and it seems to work pretty well without hogging resources. Â*i had it on my laptop that one night. Â*they also have a free spamware program as well but i haven't tried it yet. if u dont like it you can always uninstall it easily.

^thanks willie! i finally got my new laptop. back to tuning again WOOT!...lol

Im leaning towards NOD if i want to pay, or towards Avast if i want free.

either way, this is cool to get everyone's input on good antivirus software. :D

Dude, I've been in IT for years. Just use Symantec's NAV 9 OR 10 CORP Edition. This is used in MOST of the pc's and servers used by Orange County and LA County. This is not freeware - no advertising, pop up notiffications or any crap like that. You should see a little yellow paper plane thing in your systray. Hit me up if you want a copy and it'll prove itself to you.

SoCalRedLine
02-20-2008, 04:50 PM
^no way. Never a symantec product as long as i live. they have malicious software. you cant uninstall it. if you have to make a special program to uninstall your software, it fails in my opinion.

but thanks for the heads up :D

free tune?! j/k!

heh, free tools? :D
i can always check your timing and make sure you arent knocking like crazy (most evo's are, and dont realize it)

nicklulu

u dont know u have a virus if u dont have any software.... they dont all destroy your computer... just lives.... so many of them nowadays just send your personal info they have learned to make them not destroy computers as bad as in the past.
back in the day a virus meant total recovery
