Just gauging interest from the local members to see if they would like to see my 87octane/MPG saver/100hp tune.

...getting 25-27mpg right now driving 60%hwy/40%city

Here is the tune. You are able to run semi stockish boost with this tune. Do not copy this map to your car without logging everything to ensure that it is working without excessive knock.

Remember i have the following mods:
GM 3-port
Stock CB
3" testcat
Tanabe DP
K&N drop-in

http://www.socalevo.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=59325.0;id=15248

there it is. 17psi tapering to 16.5ish.

car still makes 300hp on 87 (according to Evoscan ... this is still higher than the 289ish it would make on the stock BCS )

BUT, as i mentioned in this thread, this isnt safe to run at WOT in 5th for more than 10-15seconds. I was watching my EGT's start to climb up passed 1300°F, even though the car wasnt knocking (yet...) anything higher than those EGT's arent safe for the valves/manifold/turbo/etc.

TUNE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

This tune is set up for a GM 3-port. If you are running with a MBC, or the stock BCS...you will need to re-tune for 17psi.

For the people that want to run Neutered boost (10psi taper to 7psi):

Option A: GM 3-port
change all the Max Wastegate Duty tables from 2500+ to zero. This sends all of the boost to the wastegate without any bleed-off.

Option B: Wastegate only boost control--

In this option, you bypass all boost control methods.
Basically, take a 6" piece of Vac. Tubing and connect it from the nipple on the Lower Intercooler Pipe to the wastegate nipple. This is the same method as the GM 3-port, just less electronic and more manual :D.

Also, for best MPG, dont exceed 65-80 mph (or 2500-3500rpm) ;)

^lol... lets get your map switch working. Then we can take full advantage of that new 3-port you got there :D

I guess nobody really cares about the tune...

but this is what it consists of:

boost line connected directly to the WG (only allows 7-10psi max)
-or- if you have the 3-port, 0% the WGDC.
...this makes max boost in 3rd = 7-9psi, 4th = 9-10psi, 5th = 10-11psi

RPM's are limited to 4.5K
Fuel is leaned out significantly during cruise (only)
speed is limited to 85mph (140kmh)
Timing is advanced during cruise, and reduced during boost to allow 87octane.

so far ive averaged 25-27mpg over 3 tanks. (it helps to drive like a grandma...0 to 60, in 1 or more minutes.)

You do understand if your tuned for higher WGDC or boost/load you need to change/make up for it right?

You might throw a code- i.e. to rich/lean ...

I.e. on a stock car, if you turn the boost all way down with a boost controller, and keep WOT- you'll eventually throw a CEL ... :p

Anyway I'm sure you do- I just want people to understand its not just as easy as turning down your boost :\ ...

Not too impressed I get close to 25 most of the time with just a straight 91 tune. Mind you most of my driving is on the open road.

I can get 25mpg with 91 octane on my car...

good mileage and still able to have some fun @ 26psi on 91. :)

I would imagine you could tune in some more boost with 87 than what you have currently.

Also, try the open loop mod on your normal 91 oct tune, I think you would be surpised to see almost the same mileage as you are getting with 87 with your evo set to Honda CX mode.

heh... CX mode :D

yea, i have the open loop mod set for 15.2:1 right now. Timing during cruise is 38-40°

the main purpose for this was to eventually make a full boost 87oct map. Especially with gas prices the way they are.
Im starting to take a large hit to the pocketbook commuting 300-500+ miles/week

Im also pretty sure i can squeak a little more MPG out of this tune with some more fuel/timing modifications.

You would be wrong on your last statement. Reading comprehension is not your friend. As stated I'm doing almost as well as you are on a 91 tune. WHY IN THE WORLD would I want to neuter my car just to get a couple more MPG? :uglystupid2: I don't drive the Evo for a mileage maker O0. Glad you like your results. It's not for me though at least not yet  .

More power to you if you want to drive a gutless wonder, but if I want to do that I have my Miata that does way better on gas.

I'm almost always at 25+ mpg.

But if you're looking for more info on tuning for 87, PM UltraFlip.
He was doing this successfully 2 years ago.

Same with Scott Gray, he's been running 87 for quite a while but now he moved on to E85.

Some of us actually do Care about tuning although for me I can't keep my foot out of the gas and love the boost. I only commute backroads 30 miles a day round trip to work.

I understand what you are trying to do and why. Good Luck man

When gas goes up to $5/gallon people will be getting a 91 and 87 tune rather then a 91 and race gas.

I am temped to try and do this, but I don't drive my car that much and just to boost happy.

i want an 87 tune and an e85 tune if it is ever more readily available...like at every gas station.

How are people getting 25mpg? I can drive off boost almost all tank and barley eek out 20mpg. I'm tuned and my mpg went up from 16-17 to 17.5-19mpg. I've been thinking of going to 87 but if I can get 25 that would be ok on 91.

SoCalRedLine
04-25-2008, 12:33 PM
^thats a good question. I havent figured out how people are getting 25mpg on 91. I could barely get 18-20 out of my 91 tune...even with timing and fuel modifications during HWY cruising loads.
maybe they drive 90% hwy driving, *shrug*

So far, since this tune my total overall average over 6 tanks is 25mpg. thats with grandma driving 60% and a$$hole driving 40% of the time. 60/40 hwy/city. But the biggest savings on in the $$ area. Each tank i save ~$3.50, over 6 tanks thats $21 saved. In 1 month thats ~$50 savings ...or 1 tank of gas. over a year thats $600 saved on gas... thats a whole free month of gas for me.

I may be driving on a 'neutered' tune, but im limping/waddling all the way to the bank :D...lol.

Im sure there are some other things i can do to save a bit more gas$$. But, for now, this is doing much better than before.

Id love to provide the map for SCE, but there are WAY too many haters here, and aparently i cant tune.

(but this tune is still available for all those people that believed in me and supported the cause, you all know who you are O0)

Anyone just turn down the boost and do a regular tune on 87 and not deal with all the speed/rev limiting?
SoCalRedLine , did you play with different combos and finalize this package or did you just go all out and set things to the minimum to start with?

SoCalRedLine
04-25-2008, 01:06 PM
^thats where i started. Ive played around with letting full boost, also full RPM...

full boost/4.5 rev limit i noticed i had to pull the timing back quite a bit at higher RPM.
full RPM/no boost, i noticed that the car will actually boost creep after 5K rpms. It would go from 10psi to ~14psi at higher rpm's

i settled on 4.5K rev limit and no boost, cause it keeps the inj. duty down well below 48%.
Now, i have went and tuned the cruise section of the maps (30-50load at 3000-3500rpm) to run 15.2:1 afr. It helped bump me up another couple miles per gallon (i think) ill find out on the next tank.

problem for me, is that i dont get much time to do anything...so car takes a back seat to other priorities.

SoCalRedLine
05-21-2008, 02:21 AM
so, ive finished tuning my project87 map for full stockish boost on 87octane

ill post up the partial Fuel map, openloop load table, timing table, MWGDC, and TBEC table for everyone. You will have to tune the rest of your High Octane fuel maps, BDEL yourself. If you need help with the BDEL stuff, check out my GM 3-port thread.

This works, and has been getting me a consistant 25mpg.
If you limit boost to WG only boost (10 to 7psi) and rev limit to 4K rpm, you can get 28mpg...but it sucks driving.
If you drive around @ WOT after every light, you should still see about 20-22mpg.

Also, im not responsible for you blowing up your car... i didnt put a gun to your head and force you to put this tune on your car :D
It is up to you to log and make sure everything is working correctly, and change accordingly.

Another Note:
Ive noticed that after long periods of WOT (more than 15 seconds in 5th gear), EGT's will start to climb past 1300°F... which indicates to me, that the timing is as retarded as it can get and still run full boost on sh1t for gas.

it does! even in stock form, you can drive the evo around on 87...not the safest thing to do but, it's not impossible.

mike tuned his car for 87 in a fashion similar to Dr. Gray in the past. changing timing and turning down the boost.

one could argue that 91 octane is too low for evos with stock maps even.

seriously...fk gas. If i could run piss & vinegar through the motor, i would. :D

but, keeping the car means selling all my parts to keep enough to make the car payments until student loans kick in.

DOES THE CAR EVEN RUN ON 87.................

yes, because:
lower boost
low compression (8.5:1)
good flowing head design
catless = ~100°F lower EGT's

...all help prevent pre-detonation.

anyways, *BAM*:

BUT, as i mentioned previously, this isnt safe to run at WOT in 5th for more than 10-15seconds. I was watching my EGT's start to climb up passed 1300°F, even though the car wasnt knocking (yet...) anything higher than those EGT's arent safe for the valves/manifold/turbo/etc.
