i dont know if this issue has ever been discussed, but in any case, i thought i'd make use of a new folder.

I own an 03 Evo (5-spd. no ACD) and someone with a 9 mr wants to swap their transmissions with me. long story, short: 9mr owner wants to track his car (wants to compete in some series) and wants a 5-spd instead of his 6. i would like a six to make use of all the freeway miles my Evo sees. at first, the idea seemed ok, but then i consider the issue of ACD, possibly custom fabricating parts to make either work, etc. most likely this cant happen but i thought i'd put it out there for the "experts" to consider.

would anyone on here have any realistic experience with something like this?

Possible? work involved (not planning on doing this myself if it actually can happen...more or less looking for a shop to do the work)?

im not really concerned about whether or not this is "worth it" but more so, how feasible something like this can/would be.

any legitmate advice is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, good post John! You want to make sure of all the facts before swapping trannies.

John

From what I have researched through evom.net is that you can do the swap safetly regardless of ACD. The housing for the transmission (5spds) should be the same. Only difference for the years has been the transfer case and the differentials (open diffs for early evo 8's). All you need are the proper mounts, shifter base, enclosure, and shifter lines. Everything else should be good to go...

yea, john. the tranny's are the same housing/layout. the only difference is the shifter stuff (cables, shifter, etc).

The transfer case is a seperate unit from the trans. I have pics of my trans when it was out if you want to see...

We have done every transmission and transfer case swap out there. Made a 6spd into a 5spd and vice versa, made a ACD car into non ACD and vice versa. Its all possible with the right knowledge. Your best bet is to take it somewhere with experience in the swaps and the parts necessary for said conversion. Be careful who you let work on your EVO, most of the shops (especially the new ones) will tell you they know how to do everything for an EVO but they don't. Good Luck man.

depends how you look at it. i spend 70%-80% of my time freeway driving. being able to have an extra gear there would benefit me. plus, i dont have mivec so automatically, my mileage should be better than yours if we drive the same route/style.

for street driving, i would assume the 5-spd is better since you dont spend as much time changing gears.

Won't you have to swap transfer cases as well? The 6-spd transfer case is listed as a different and more expensive part.

for 6spd to 5spd and vice versa swap you need the follow:

1. Trans mounts and brackets
2. Shifter cables
3. Shifter and housing cage
4. Shifter bezel
5. Speedo harness

bump for part #'s? I'm trying to price everything together...

dont you waste more gas with the 6 speed??? I've heard people with MR say that 6 speed trannies waste more gas... also the MPG is 24 miles for a speed and 26 for a 5 speed?

yes if youre trying to save gas, stick to your 5 speed...

i personally like how the 6 speed center console looks, but for your purposes, it sounds like you outta save the money... and time and stick with whatcha got.
