Hey guys/gals. I was wondering what's the life of a stock clutch? mention mileage when you started noticing any slippage or POWAAH MOds that caused premature failure. Also is it normal for a lil grinding on cold start driving from 1st to 2nd gear? I have an 06 MR with 13,343 miles and have just started to notice a lil grind on cold driving. ive driven the car normally, no track use, hard launch, redline shifting on occasions. Tell your stories.

nice guys...keep it going...
you know the grinding is when i take off from 1st to 2nd definitely after start up...its more like notchiness...but i do feel the synchros...on low rpms under 3k. but if i drive a bit hard no notching at all...its weird cause i've heard MR's are smooth as butter...i think ill take it in.

i notice that its a bit notchy when colr in my car as well. MY VIII did the same thing when it was coold.

My VIII had the stock clutch , all the way through 60k miles, and was holding strong. I sold it with that clutch in there. Car was putting down 320 wheel. A Launch here and there.... pretty rare. Spritied drives sometimes. Mainly got on it getting on the freeway, or quick 2nd 3rd gear pulls.

100k on a stock clutch is pushing it! specially on the amount of mods and the amount of abuse it has seen.. Talking about track related.. even if this happens when you road race and leaving the 1/4 mile track which will murderer just about any clutch.. but for the most part it should be able to last at least over 50k.. unlike on what some folks have experience...

My 06 MR has 49K and has begun to slip slightly in 5th and 6th gear when the boost hits at mid to high rpm. (300whp + driven daily...in traffic)
The car has been to a few road race events and autox. I think daily driving kills the clutch faster then the track. Anaheim Mitsu quoted me $1,200 installed.

I had 70k on my evo9 and had it replaced at RRE a couple of months ago. the new clutch seems to have PIS much lower than the stock. I launched the stock clutch many times as well as HPDE at the track and it still had life on it when I changed it.

LiquidLife
12-17-2008, 04:48 PM
You must have engaged your stock too quickly to have had a good launch, from what i've seen most stock clutches bite the dust after a few good launches. That's what the pros say, just don't launch on the stock clutch, and it will last for a while.

Mine ate shit after about 30,000 miles, Alfred at TTech said it was glazed over, like melted, hahaha.

I now have a much better clutch, see my signature.

JUST replaced mine. Literally picked up the car last night at RRE. BEST SERVICE I've ever had in an aftermarket shop.

66k miles. Per RRE disc had alot of meat left, and flywheel was still in GREAT shape, however, pressure plate appeared to be weak. I felt some shudder and longer engagements, so decided to change.

I probably could have gone longer.

Brisk driving, no hard launches, daily driven...

New clutch, ss line and no pill = amazing response.

i replaced mine right around 48k i think. still had a little life left in it but i could tell it was starting to go after a track day at sow. pulled it out and it was all kinda of colors... guess i heated it up pretty good. flywheel was in perfect condition though. now i have an act hd ss kit, ss line and no pill as well... and it's woooooorlds better than the stocker.

Launching seemed like the obvious culprit.

I read/saw in Top Gear that they got great launch results by using the hand brake (car in 1st, clutch out, handbrake up).
Does this work? Anyone try this?

my stocker went out at 18k, not from burning it up, the pressure plate just wouldn't hold up the 410 ft lbs of torque!

yes its called pre-loading the clutch. I have done it on all types of clutches but this method is not needed on a stock clutch on a stock turbo imo.

31000+ miles on the stock clutch. I am the 2nd owner and the clutch seems to behave normally. Shudders a little when it's cold taking off in 1st until things warm up. It engages quickly & slips well when taking off briskly.

I just finished today in replacing the clutch on my 04 evo 8 and it only took me 4 days. anywho it had 52,XXX miles on it when i replaced it and i started to notice it sliping around 50,000 miles. i'm the only owner and it had 35 miles of the lot. i say it lasted me awhile since it did take me from california to virginia and back with several hard launches. but mostly it was rolling starts from 2nd or 3rd.

I don't think the clutches are "weak" on these cars. They are just exposed to excessive abuse as opposed to other cars. No one buys 5-speed Camry's to launch them at 5K RPM or mod it to 350WHP, etc.

There are tons of people getting 75K+ on their stockers. I personally believe all these incidents of people killing their clutches before 25K miles are a result of driver error/abuse.

EDIT: My bro's previous Evo's clutch lasted until 91K when he sold it, who knows how much more life it had.

Previous owner replaced the stock clutch at 25k with another stock clutch. I bought the car at 35k. Now has 85k. So 60k miles, still feels the same as when I bought it.

though maybe it just feels the same because its been going off slowly. Hrmm. Time to test for slippage!

I bought my Evo with 48K on the car and got all the service records from the previous owner. She never replaced the clutch. I proceeded to another 72k on the clutch (total of 120K) before I replaced it. When we took the clutch out it still had material on it. I kept the disk and I'll post a picture later. Just so everyone knows, I do lots of freeway driving. I'm sure that had a lot to do with how long it lasted.

2003 Evo VIII, pretty much stock. At 88K miles the clutch is just starting to slip, however it's taken to making a grinding sound and sometimes a burning smell when I back into the garage.

I don't launch the car so I blame slogging from San Diego to L.A. and back every couple of months. :-)
