Stock EVO X Intake:

http://roadraceengineering.com/evox/parts/aem/stock.jpg

Larger suction tube. It is a moulded edm rubber piece. Looks factory. OEM quality. The best fittings and connections I have seen on an aftermarket part.

http://roadraceengineering.com/evox/parts/aem/suctiontube.jpg

Smooth inside compared to stock:

http://roadraceengineering.com/evox/parts/aem/smoothinside.jpg

Filter is inside the box:

http://roadraceengineering.com/evox/parts/aem/insidebox.jpg

All done and buttoned up.

http://roadraceengineering.com/evox/parts/aem/installed.jpg

For So Cal it is the best thing EVAR with the poorly trained anti import street racing police. You could paint the MAF pipe flat black and make your own lid for the box out of something with no logo. Officer Bob could stare at it all night long with a stupid look on his face and not know it was a highly illegal part that killed innocent people. 'Cause that is what they are looking for. They all know shiny pipes is what makes you street race boy.

Dyno:

Our Dynapack reads stock EVO Xs between 248 and 257 whp on cars running the second reflash. This is in line with Dynojet numbers I am seeing. Obviously the heartbreak dynos read much less.Â* But to use the argument of the heartbreak dyno operators... it is all about the gain, no?

Our Dynapack reads EVO Xs with full exhausts in the 270-280 range. Tuning with the ECUTeK software on these cars with full exhaust nets about 310 to 320 hp.

EVO Xs on our Dynapack with full intercooler piping and intakes, full exhaust, tuned using the ECUTeK software (yet stock fuel system) are running between 330 and 350 hp. These number are in line with other shops I am seeing here too.

That out of the way now ....

Here is a before and after. Before is a nice running EXO X with a full 3" no restriction dual exhaust system. No restriction after the DP if you know what I mean. Otherwise the car was dead stock with the version 2 factory flash.

After is with the AEM intake installed about an hour later. Note I am showing multiple runs, not the one miracle after run vs one bunk before run.

http://roadraceengineering.com/dynapack/dynos/aemevoxtest/aemevox-beforeafter-30hp-800.jpg

Here is boost before and after:

http://roadraceengineering.com/dynapack/dynos/aemevoxtest/aemevox-beforeafter-30hp-boost-800.jpg

AFR before and after:

http://roadraceengineering.com/dynapack/dynos/aemevoxtest/aemevox-beforeafter-30hp-afr-800.jpg

This intake makes great power. AEM spent a lot of time developing it over the last three months. They really do their best not to suck. Much of the power comes fromÂ* the car making a touch more boost and running a little leaner. On a dead stock car it would make less power with out the aid of the full exhaust.Â*

I logged the car's before and after dyno runs with the ECUTek logging software (you can use the logger with out putting in a license or tuning). I could read most things but no load or boost values. It will take some time to dig through the data (6 runs logged) so if someone has a hard on to disprove all this feel free to pass by the shop and get all nerdy on the raw data, please. You can also confirm there is no ECUTeK license in the car if the owner will bring it by for you.

Forgot a few details.

It uses AEM's DryFlow filter technology. Street price will be about $285. Dont forget to check your local EVO specialist first before running to e-bay or importhomeyhookup.com to get them. AEM has already shipped all the first run of these so we are expecting more in a week.

Here is the intake all assembled out of the car. The production pieces have a dark grey MAF pipe, not polished like in this pic.

http://roadraceengineering.com/evox/parts/aem/21-678.jpg

They are claiming a modest 16 hp on a bone stock car. AEM Propaganda:

I agree. ETS, AMS and others all offer Black piping and other subtle options. I think this generation of Evo owners dont want the hassle anymore.

1WkdEvo
07-24-2008, 01:15 PM
Don't fool yourself, the people outside of smog strict states still want bling, but the driver is the fact that a growing number of states are adopting stricter guidelines so it is imperative from a marketing standpoint that the vendors adapt their products accordingly. This "generation" of Evo owners is no different than they have been for years

very nice, this idea is old though. People have custom intakes like this for their 9's and 8's.Â* Nice to see aem take the idea and polish it up.Â* Stealth is good (by the way a black exhaust sticks out more than stock.Â* Production vehicles don't come with black exhaust piping...

blkside
07-26-2008, 02:10 PM
It may not come with black exhaust piping but have you ever gone man that exhaust is real black... but I bet you go damn look at that Ti exhaust. Id rather run "blkside edition" over a bright Ti cause i guarantee a shiny exhaust draws more attention.

Ok here's the thing about black exhausts...yes, once you are pulled over and a cop sees that it is sprayed black, he/she probably has a clue that its not stock. The issue however is getting pulled over in the first place and I assure you that the black exhaust is so average, so boring, so non attention grabbing that you usually don't get pulled over in the first place. A shiny exhaust, be it polished, or ti, or chrome bling bling special, is something that is seen right away and causes you to get pulled over. There are plenty of examples of people getting pulled over with stock exhausts.

Well, I got pulled over for my Avo exhaust and after going RRE stealth exhaust in black. RRE even flat black anodized all my ic pipes, fmic and bj's sheet metal intake- everything in my engine bay is black.

I have had zero tickets in 3 years in spite of getting hood popped while stopped.Â* If everything is black, they have nothing to point to :)

How is that possible?

How's it possible? The AEM would flow more air, and therefore either allow the ECU to add more fuel, or if the AFR is fat from the factory, the extra air would lean it out, making for a more efficient burn.

Out of curiosity: Are you comparing an un-tuned Injen system to an AEM + tuned set up? Or just 1:1.

I'm surprised about Injen. They typically do a fair amount of RnD before releasing a product.

The low power Injen intake turned out to be a weld that had blocked off a boost return port and the tech guys at Injen are all up in it. Just a manufacturing anomoly that bit that intake in the butt. It did a nice job of leaning it out a bit, AFRs were similar to the AEM intake, it just lowered the boost to less than stock because of the blockage.

I can't make up my mind between AEM or AMS... I love the AMS look, but AEM comes with the cooling box... how useful is that thing really?

The box keeps things much cooler rolling down the road and idling in traffic. It also nicely protects the filter from the radiator fan prop wash and resulting idle issues.

We also have the ETS intakes in stock if you like the open filter look. They too make good power and they include a bracket that doubles as a shield so you dont get the idle issues.

How much is the AEM box and how much is the ETS?

Mike W

The AEM sells for $284. We sell the RRE black version of the ETS intake for $240

For our EVO X full product offerings and price list see www.roadraceengineering.com/evox.htm

We cut out a lid for the AEM out of black 1/8" thick ABS textured plastic. The kind you would use in a stereo shop. Just traced the AEM part and cut it with some tin snips. Smoothed the edges and drilled the screw holes.

So it looks OEM

So it looks OEM bro. If you want something that looks bling, go JDM.
AEM makes the most power, looks OEM to cops and cops with a CARB cert if the cite you anyway.
It's Win, win and a sprinkle of win for good measure.

The turbo inlet hose? It is EDM rubber. Better fit, smoother inside turns and transitions, better fit for the breather, BOV and boost hoses, easy install, better price and stealth factory look come to mind.

Anyone here try running the aem without the lid? I was thinking of making a lid with slots on it for my unit but really don't wanna bother if it won't make any difference.

Problem with that is you'll be sucking in a lot of hot air. I don't care what anybody says about the IC cooling the intake charge. It can only do so much, and if you start with air temps that are 30-40deg(heck.. I could see it being double that) hotter than you would with it closed up and pulling air from the outside, your intake charge is gonna be that much hotter. And we all know how much power you lose with hot(ter) air.

Those of you that have the AEM intake BOX does it have the releasing air sound that an open air filter has *IE the Vrooom PSHHHH* LOL? or does the box muffle the sound?

You can hear it slightly! (with the radio off or low) but its not anything like the open filters!

so on AEMs site, they have a CAI for the Evo X. which in the picture seems looks like the traditional CAI that runs down to the front bumper close to the fog light. are they just using the wrong picture and the intake on this thread is their realy CAI? i'm confused.. my dad wants this intake but isn't sure

The pic on the AEM web site is of the actual intake other than it is floating in the air and has a polished piece of pipe. The ones they sell have a dark grey piece of pipe.

Cold air intakes dont have to suck the air low. If you notice the EVO X intake both stock and with the AEM installed gets cool fresh air from in front of the radiator and under the hood lip. You dont need a filter to drop down where it can suck up water to be a "cold air intake".

The one on their web site (pictured above from their web site) is the same pic as I have listed on the first page of this thread which is the same part installed and tested here.

What is the question again?
