Hey,

Yesterday my friend and I went down to CarMax to test drive an 05 EVO VIII. Less than 7k, and it was nice. Asking price was 27k.

He was driving, and I was in the back seat. Drove nice and smooth. We stopped at a light, and he used the factory two step to launch. However, when he shifted into 2nd gear, there was a loud clunk. I thought maybe drivetrain shock from the launch, or his horrible driving skills? When he floored it when we were rolling it was fine...

Any suggestions on what that could be ?

Thanks

If I get one, nope.

I'll take it to the strip a few times, and some spirited driving here and there, but that's it.

I'm surprised it has that clunk. Are other manuals like that as well, or just with the EVO?

27k is a rip off. get a ix for around 25 my friend.

car max usually charges 2-3k more just because they can and will finance anyone.

Oh, if I purchase one it won't be from CarMax, lol. I will more in likely go down to South Coast like everyone says. We have just been looking for one to test drive for the longest time, and CarMax let us and had them, lol.

I'm still unsure if I should purchase one, but I really love them now, lol. Sure was fun as hell!

Hey,

Thanks guys for helping me out.

Before I purchase anything, I will always have the price lowered. :) Thanks for letting me know I can get one for around 25k.

I really want one, but don't know how I will like driving manual every day.

If I get one, i will have about a grand to dump in for performance mods.

Thanks again

i think if you can pick up that 05 for like 25 its not bad of a deal considering it only has 7k miles on it...

its almost brand new still. and yeah you can pay 23k for one with like 20k miles but i would rather pay a little extra for low ass miles like that.

I drive back and fourth to the bay area for the past 1 year. I am used to it :) I think its because I went from a Nissan Spec V to an EVO.

as said 5 million times that clunk is normal. i used to get that clunk in every upshift if i shift very very fast :D

30k miles with 320whp and the rear diff. was still fine O0 but i've never launched my car...

and agree don't get a car from carmax and don't spend 27k on an Evo VIII lol, go to south coast they'll take care of ya

OP- ya, and if you get the car, and keep doing that launch and slamming your 2nd gear like that, look forward to saying goodbye to your clutch, and hello to a tranny rebuild...

We stopped at a light, and he used the factory two step to launch.

Uh, the Evo does not come with a factory two-step...

^^Maybe he means the factory stationary 5k rev limited.

I can't believe how so many think that that is a launch control. I wonder who started that rumor? Like you said it is a rev-limiter for when the Evo is stopped in first gear, nothing more. It is there to protect the drivetrain from launches higher than 5k. And if you have any experience at all you know that you need to launch an Evo much higher than that to get a good number.

ya neil is right its not launch control, you can set it up to do that with ecuflash though.

fist off... there is no two step on a factory car. when you sit idle and u rev up.. it should not go past 5k rmp. but 27k is toooo much for a VIII...

Hey,

I haven't been on here in awhile, so I will post.

Sorry I didn't know it wasn't a 2-step. I don't know as much about EVOs than all of you. Thanks for informing me.

I won't buy a car from CarMax, and if I do, I only want to go to SCM. Going there was to just test drive the car.

Obviously I am not going to drop the clutch at 5k rev limiter, I am not stupid. LOL Thanks for checking with me though. ;)
