View Full Version : EVO X Cosworth Cam Testing

Dude, I love this job. Just ran the Cosworth cams on a already ECUTek tuned EVOX. The car had intake, full exhaust, upper and lower I/C piping, biggee i/c. Nice MBC. Stock fuel system. One of the strongest cars I have dynoed and tuned so far before the cams install. 91 octane.

This is before and after. Before tuned and running good. After is cams only, no other mods and not re-tuned. Same boost before and after.

http://roadraceengineering.com/dynapack/dynos/cosworthcams-evox/TUNED-COSWORTHUNTUNED-BOOST-800.jpg

Then did a little tuning. Added a degree of ignition advance between 3500 and 6000 since there was no knock or timing pull. Played with MIVEC a little. Overall about three tweaks as time allowed. ECUTeK takes a long tome to upload changes. Boost controller was untouched.

http://roadraceengineering.com/dynapack/dynos/cosworthcams-evox/COSWORTH-TUN-NOTUNE-800.jpg

So, overall Cosworth cams gains with the cams installed and some touchup tuning.

Fun stuff. These are an early release pair. Production ones are still a few weeks away. EVO 9s are turning to the old and busted more every day. :D

They are not releasing details till they hit the shelves in October.

With an SST tranny I would keep things to about 350 at the wheels and very reversable for a good year or so. Let someone else find the limits and pay $9k for a new tranny out of warranty. Your MR will be lots of fun with an intake, full exhaust and a tune.

Mike W
10-29-2008, 04:16 PM
They are close to being released. They will be on the shelves next week. You dont have to buy them from a Subaru shop. EVO specialists have them too. $700 for the pair. Install is $380 A touch up retune if you are already flashed is $150

Valve springs are only required if you will be going past the factory red line or living at the red line (lots of track days). Cossie single valve spring kit is $300 and add $250 to the install.

Awesome, thanks for the info Mike.

Any news as far as offering ECUFlash in the near future?

Mike W
10-29-2008, 04:32 PM
When ECUFlash is an equal alternative, then it will be worth it. If EcuTek can do more tricks, has better definitions, better live map tracing for more accurate tuning, then EcuTek is worth the extra $250. It will still be a while before that is the case, if it is the case.

Here is the secret to wife problems invented by a 2G customer Mario Loria a long time ago. A moment of silence for his sheer genius...

You pull a plug wire or two on her car. It runs like crap and she nags you to get it checked out. Luckily ou know this quaint little shop that does excellent work on your EVO at reasonable prices. You trust them and will take it in to get it looked at.

You hang out at the shop for an evening and watch cars running on the dyno and shoot the shit, plug the wires back in. Depending on how brave you are we run your card for for $100, $200, $500 for a new Kuhneutson valve and a heavy duty clutch belt (since we were in there anywhays). The money goes towards your account. In the mean time you save up the cash from your normal strip club budget. Then it is "Baby, you got to spend $450 fixing your car, can I pretty please spend a little on my car?"

Well planed and managed, there is a $1,000 in two months.

^no, not butthurt at all....

I think that it is an outstanding service that the vendors provide by testing products and sharing their results with the Evo community. It is a way to help members make informed choices about products they are considering. That being said....... The performance of the Evo X is proving to be impressive and its response to simple bolt-on mods is very impressive. I just don't think that makes the VIII or the IX "old and busted". Are there any Evo X's consistently holding the big WHP numbers that AMS and Buschur have gotten with the VIII and XI? Should someone tell AMS that their 8.751@166 MPH Evo VIII is old and busted? The VIII and IX have proven their worth with many on the road drivin as daily drivers on the plus side of 500whp. Believe me, the Evo lover in my is very hopeful that the new Evo X's engine platform carries the Evo legacy for as long as the 4G63.

I'm just sayin...my hats off to vendors for the services they provide and the invaluable info they provide on aftermarket parts and tuning. But "new hotness" doesn't always mean that the previous are "old and busted".

Parts prices are all current on www.roadraceengineering.com/evox.htm

Some of the things you could get will make more power later with a big turbo. Intercooler upgrade, UR Downpipe, I/C pipeing wont get their full benifit on a stock turbo. These cars make great power even with the little parts you have now with just tuning.

The stock fuel system is at 100% up around 350 hp and doing injectors and a fuel pump right now is still pretty expensive.

You could probably get close to 400 hp going several different ways. Stock turbo with every bolt on or stock car with a biggee turbo. For sure to get up close to or over 400 hp you need tuning and more fuel.
