Lydia, the office manager here at RRE has a dilemma. She has her trusty 1985 Ford Crown Victoria that has served her well for many years as he comfy reliable sofa on wheels party cruiser. It is now getting to the point where it always needs “one more thing” for $400 to keep it running. It needed tires, alternator, radiator, water pump.. always something. Now it needs a smog inspection before it can be registered but the water pump is leaking. That is the last straw.

http://roadraceengineering.com/rre/crownvic.jpg

What to do? Scrap it? It’s a shame with all the money she has tied up in the car. She can’t seem to keep it running long enough to sell it, add in gas prices making old big V-8s not very desirable and it does not look good for her. I think we have a solution.

Crown Vic Charity Dyno Blow Raffle

We will be offering tickets at $10 a piece. Here is the plan:

The car:
1985 Ford Crown Victoria Ford 351 Winsor motor, 2bbl carb 187,000 miles. Runs great other than the water leak.

The Dyno:
Dynapack DP6000 AWD Dyno

The Event:
We drain the oil from the Crown Vic and bolt it to the RRE Dynapack Dyno. The clock starts as soon as the motor hits 4,000 RPM full throttle. The Dynapack will hold the motor at 4,000 RPM at full load until something gives. Hopefully spectacularly 

The prize:
The person with a time guess closest to the blowed motor time splits the total collected ticket money with Lydia, half and half.

Rules:
Winner need not be present to win.
Tickets to be purchased by sending $10 for each time guess to Paypal at [email protected]
Winner will be paid by paypal
Prize money determined by total number of entries.
In the case of multiple entries for a specific time, requests received will be moved later by one second intervals as available.
The judge’s decision will be final and will be determined from analyzing from the time that the motor first hits 4,000 rpm to the point in the dyno log that shows when power output hits zero.

The event will be videotaped and posted on Youtube.

When: Saturday October 25th 2008 5:00 PM

How to participate: Send $10 per guess to [email protected] through Paypal with a minute:second guess per each time/ticket.

We will be having a DSM Dyno day that day. Everyone is welcome to watch.

I used to work with a guy from Illinois. In the winter when there was not much else to do they would round up clunkers and "brick" them. Drain the oil and put a brick on the throttle till they blew, taking bets on how long each would last. I always wanted to try it on a dyno. He said Ford 460s were usually the champ, being able to just power through the rod and crank bearings welding themselves.

Only 4 people got in on the action (2 from So Cal EVO) and by the time we were done dynoing the DSM cars that showed up for the LA DSM dyno day it was getting late. The DSM guys barely had enough money to come up with some Little Ceasars pizza between them.

Come on, no one else wants in on the action? It is for a good cause. Looking at doing it Thursday evening. This only works with piston fodder... um I mean spectators. Yeah, that's it... "spectators". How 'bout a few more donations!

Mike W
10-30-2008, 10:14 PM
Well, there is no replacement for displacement.

Drained the oil, water pump was dead with no coolant in the radiator. We were hoping for a merciful death. Not.

@ 2 minutes it still sounded fine.

@ about 3 minutes I think you could hear it bogging, not too happy but running. Lots of steam coming from somewhere.

@ around 4 minutes it was slowing down and knocking and smoking horribly. The end is near!

@ 5 minutes it was only holding 2200 rpm on its own at WOT We were scrambling for fans to clear out the smoke and Robert went for a fire extinguisher. Any second now, GET BACK!

It sounded like only 2 or 3 cylinders all through 6 minutes and holding about 1100 rpm at WOT. My foot was getting tired :-/

@ 7 minutes it sounded like a 1950s cartoon car missing and sputtering with something beating the living crap out of the oil pan for good measure.

7:29 it just quit.

MRbaker called it closest at 5:30. Everyone else was in the mid 4s through the twos with a couple in the mid 1s. Ryan you have a $45 RRE credit. The others that chipped in to make this possible, thanks!

Pics and video to come!

I looked at the Dynapack screen somewhere in the beginning of the 6 minute range and it was bumping along at 3.5 hp output. The rest of the hp generated was to spin the crank against the ever welding bearing journals and to dragging the expanded to all hell pistons in their shrinking bores with no oil.

At about 3 minutes I saw someone grab a fire extinguisher cause it looked and sounded so bad. I started to have my doubts about sitting in the driver's seat. Thought about planning my escape route over the Dynapack boxes with my underwear on fire. But it just kept going :-P
