well I thought it would be great to post this up, as many people have mixed emotions about passing SMOG with cams. I thought some would be surprised by the results because I was..! The reason why I needed my car to be SMOGGED was that I recently moved to SoCal and my previous out of state registration expired...

My car was tuned with these mods a little over a year ago by nonother than Alfred...

2006 Evo IX
Tuning Technologies dyno tune
TD-05 16G Turbocharger
Cosworth 272 M2 camshafts
ETS 3" front mount intercooler
ETS 2.5" lower IC pipe
AEM short-ram intake
Forge MBC
Megan 3" TBE (consist of DP, TP, and catback exhaust) w/ resonated test pipe ----------->Â* replaced with crusty OEM catalytic converter...!
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Precision 780 fuel injectors

These are the Smog Check numbers my car produced...Â* ;)

How so...? The AEM is C.A.R.B. legal and the injectors only have a sticker on 'em...

ETS 3" front mount intercooler
ETS 2.5" lower IC pipe
Forge MBC
Megan 3" downpipe

Those are instant failure for visual inspection. Even vacuum lines routed incorrectly will fail you.

Passing the sniffer is easy - the visual kills you.

At least you dont ave to worry about it for a couple more years now.

-he did check out the vacuum lines.
-As for the MBC, its located under the air filter and really cant be seen, but is still fully accessible for adjustment with the filter on or off.
-Front mount and LICP arent emission related
-the DP wasnt even looked at, but it is painted with high temp black paint for visual aesthetics

That's why i'm saying you lucked out. If he would have been more savvy it would have failed. LICP and FMIC is definitely smog related because it affects the engine dynamics. Even if it doesnt affect the sniffer, pretty much any mod without a CARB EO# will fail the visual. Most people get by this though because the guy either doesnt care or simply doesnt know. CA sucks - and it's going to get a lot worse.

U can also pass smog with a tp as well... On e-85!

There was a post up awhile ago were and someone scanned piece of paper saying that those parts are fine on a factory turbocharged vehicle; in essence won't have anything to do with smog.Â* Unless I was informed otherwise, this is what I remembered.

As stated above I also recall the post about a FMIC having no effect on a smog check.Â* It is ok to replace with something else.

Way to go Matt.Â* Looks like I have no worries as I have the 264/272 stagger and the rest is the same. O0

Have to do mine in June.

A little OT, but is it possible to ask the smog station for a pre-smog?Â* I want to see if my car will pass with what I have and not have my data sent to the DMV.Â* I just want that paper so I don't get hassled too much if I do get pulled over.

4G63 FEVER
02-04-2009, 08:03 PM
Yes you can ask for a pretest. Did this on older vehicles I wasn't sure were going to pass.

TeKiZeRo
02-04-2009, 08:17 PM
Awesome! I think I'll try it out. Does it cost a lot of monies for the pretest?

4G63 FEVER
02-04-2009, 08:26 PM
Not too sure,Â* think it was in the area of 20 bucks.Â* Well worth it if you have any doubts, as it doesn't get reported!!!

I did it with a 84 vintage vehicle and after it passed the pretest they just did the same thing again and it was good to go, no muss no fuss.Â* As I have stated several times also get a bottle of rubbing alcohol and add it to your tank.Â* Got this tip from a guy who used to do smog and he said it will make big difference if you are concerned about failing.Â* I used this in my Mazda the last time I had it done and the tech was amazed at how clean it ran.

TeKiZeRo

I'm not too concerned about failing. If anything I'll just drop in 1-2 tanks of E85.

Cali sucks bawlz. Cops are getting stricter too =/.

Very good post. I'm glad to see that I don't have too much to worry about when the time comes.

I just wish I wouldn't have given away my stock cat. Oh well shit happens!

Interesting stuff. I have trouble believing I would pass a smog test just by putting my stock cat back on but who knows.

Luckily I just renewed my reg by mail so I'm good for a year at least. But next year I'll be nervous about the whole thing.

Printed papers won't save you when you get owned by someone who DOES care, or someone who is out for you, which is pretty much all law enforcement and DOT.Â* Â* Â* Â*

Sorry to spoil your party, but you should really be thinking about learning how to de-tune your Evo and put it back to stock(ish) each time you smog it.

o-townFLA
03-23-2009, 01:05 PM
I wouldn't have to worry about de-tuning my car if the initial tune is spot on...

LiquidLife
03-23-2009, 01:39 PM
Spot on what, more power=less ozone...Â* eventually a spot on tune won't help anyway depending on mods.Â* Pretty much all mods to your evo that effect emissions even in the slightest are illegal, and that's how the government will see it, Schwarzenegger wants your money too, so it's it will get worse, as someone said above.

That's where the problem is, not whether your emissions meet the requirements, but your mods. It's bullshit I know, because you can have all kinds of mods and still pass emissions, but they still say it's illegal.

Just took a 2005 Evo VIII stage 1++ to get smog checked. HKS 272, Desno 660cc, Works TB, SAMCO couplers, WORKS O2, FP Green and a proper tune etc.... All we did was install the OEM cat and she passed with flying colors.Â*

Also always remember to drive your car for a little bit before you go to get smogged, especially if you have just cleared codes or the car doesnt get driven daily.Â*

The OBDII system has a series of readiness checks for the various emission systems such as EGR, Catalyst, Evap etc..... The ECU needs enough real engine run time to make sure that these systems really are working properly.Â* Typically there are 5 to 8 readiness tests that need to test as "ready" depending on your particular car. While all of them do not need to report as "ready" to pass smog, the majority of them must.Â* The only way to get them to "ready" status is to make sure the systems are functioning and then just drive the car for 20 miles or so then recheck the status.Â*

Good Luck guys and if you ever need help getting your EVO to legitimately pass emissions testing let us know.

Alfred :mitsu:

I know its an old thread but I got a couple of questions for you guys.

1. Do you guys mind sharing which smog stations you guys went to that didn't notice/care about the downpipe and 02 housings.

2. Can anyone confirm whether putting a bottle of rubbing alchohol or mixing 1/2 gallons of e85 in a tank will help if your not tuned for e85?

3. Should I even bother removing the catback. Or is it cool to just bolt the stock cat back on.
