View Full Version : What to do with keyless FOB when surfing?

Any ideas how to leave the FOB in/around the car and just take the key with you into the water?

When I go surfing, I don't want to take the keyless FOB with me into the water because I heard it's not water proof.

But there's a problem then, because the car won't let you lock the FOB inside. Also I don't think putting the FOB in a lock box attached to the outside part of the frame would work either because it would still be within pretty close proximity to the car and would probably unlock if someone pushed a button.

I tried putting the FOB in an anti-static bag, thinking this might block the RF signal but this doesn't work either.

use a water proof zippy bag and attach it to your wetsuit!

something like this

^^ that one is recommended! the aquapac

Just to be on the safe side i would aslo recommend using a ziplock back inside the waterproof bag just incase!

and i also recommend putting the waterproof bag on the inside of the wetsuit! its better to be uncomfortable then lose your key!

Turns out if you wrap the FOB in enough tin foil it blocks the signal and you can lock the fob in the car and take the key with you into the water.

problem solved!

Take the battery out of the fob, leave both in car. Take metal key out of fob and take with you.

Note that if someone knows your fob and battery are in the car, they can smash a window (or gain access otherwise) and re-install the battery and they now own your car.

The metal key in the fob is ONLY needed is the fob battery fails.

i have the same problem with a different car. sometimes when i feel ppl are watching me and dont wanna hide the key under a bumper or tire, i put it in a shoe and just leave the shoe on the beach haha. sort of sketchy i suppose but its worked so far...who's gonna steal one shoe?

Blueman...how do you situate your board in the evo? in the front seat or racks? how does it work for you?

swallow the key, everytime you walk up to your car it will unlock and when you sit in it you can start it.

You can put the FOB up against the battery wall of the trunk and it will not start the car. If you place it right you can still open the trunk if its near the front and it wont open it if its in the back... try some stuff out...

-Remove the metal key from the FOB
-Open the hood
-Put the FOB on the plastic tray next to the intake snorkel, although anyplace in the engine bay is fine, the more forward the better (someplace people can't reach from underneath)
-Close hood
-Lock doors with door lock button on the driver's door (or passenger door)

To get back in, just use the metal key to unlock the door and then open the hood and extricate your key FOB...

Why couldn't you just leave the FOB at home and just take the key for surfing?
