Today as I was driving to work I stopped at the red light, I already knew my 5th was grinding a little but it would still go in with no problems, so at that time I was just stopped and going through the gears and the car went fine. When it was time for me to put it in 5th it would go in but it wouldn't do anything so I shifted back to 4th and pulled into parking lot. When i stopped because there was a car pulling out at that moment i noticed that my 5th was reverse and my reverse was not there neither i tried other gears and it just seemed like they locked up, i can tell that the car wants to pull but it was not moving anywhere. so i put it in 5th which was reverse and i pulled into spot and went to work until lunch... When i went out to lunch i tried going through the gears once again and the car drove fine except it didn't have 5th, so i parked it and went back to work. After work I hoped in the car and same thing happened except this time every gear including neutral was reverse.

Does anyone have any good tips on what this can be or anything that would help me take out the transmission.

thank you

Take it to a shop! I don't think its something that can be easilly done in a driveway or SoCalEvo style parking lot :2funny:

I have a lift and all the tools that i can need for only like $15 so its not going to be done in a drive way i just dont know if i need to drop the engine or twist the transmission when i pull it out or put it in... little tips help alot

It's possessed and has a mind of its own. Seriously though that is darned strange.

If you aren't versed in mechanics doing a trans isn't a good place to start especially on this car. Good luck if you do decide to try.

i have never taken a tranny out of evo but i have worked on alot of awd eclipses in past, and i already know that this is going to be pain in the a$$, i am tempted to take it to the shop but saving some money would be nice if i could

Your best bet would be to send it to Shep. They are pretty cheap compaired to other places and they know what they are doing O0

If you've worked on DSM's you can work on an Evo 8. It has more in common with a GS-X then you think.
... and it's not like it's a Ferrari.

sounds like a shift linkage problem (why would 5th be R????) it must be the selecter that is at fault. hence the linkage might be at fault here.

if its gear problem it would not SWITCH gears on (5th is R )

isn't there a shop in Ontario, California that works on Mitsu Transmissions?Â* At least it's somewhat local.

Put it on a Truck Take it to Reese Tuning and let them figure it out. Don't mess with it. Call up James or Brad at Reese Tuning and ask how much to diagnose the problem. Go from there.

It could be a linkage. But if it's not, it could be a broken fork or something keeping it from shifting out of reverse.

Yes, shep is awesome, but you are going to have to send it in, then wait 4 weeks for them to even look at it and give you a price on how much it will be to build it. Then another few weeks to get it back. Personally, I would either figure out if it's the cables or the tranny, then go from there.

Cables, fix it quick and save your pennies for a rebuild anyway because your 5th gear is grinding. If it's your only car, and it's your tranny, find a good used tranny, put it in and either send the old one to shep right there, or hang on for a while until you gather up the cash to fix it. Much less downtime that way...

RRE has replaced 6 clutches and rebuilt my tranny + replaced the transfer case over the years. They did a great job and the price was right. I wouldn't consider going anywhere else. At the least, go to a shop that specializes in these cars, or your asking for trouble...
